1. Bebidas tradicionales

2. In Peru, there are several drinks that often accompany our meals. One of the most widely
consumed beverages nationwide is the "chicha morada." "Chicha morada" is a drink that
is prepared from boiled purple corn and pineapple pieces, sugar, quince, lemon juice,
and cinnamon are often added. This drink originated in the Andean region of my country,
but as I mentioned at the beginning, it is now consumed nationwide. Besides its rich
flavor, "chicha morada" has beneficial health properties. Among its enhancing properties
are that it lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, among others.
3. "Chicha" consumption nationwide has grown so much that it has even reached the
consumption of Coca-Cola. You can find this drink almost anywhere thanks to the sale of
"chicha morada" in bottles or cans, which previously were not used.
4. Another national drink is Inca Kola. This soft drink is native of Peru, whose main
ingredient is the lemongrass plant. However, its formula is kept in strict confidence. This
yellow soda of sweet taste is one of only two drinks in the world that has overcome the
Coca-Cola sales in their country of origin. The Inca Kola is the national drink that goes
well with all sorts of Peruvian foods, which is why this drink is still maintained as the most
consumed beverage among Peruvians.

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Chicha is a term we use for varieties of fermented and nonfermented beverages. Chicha may
also be made from cassava root, maize, grape, apple, or other fruits. If you are in Peru, you
may also hear about chicha de jora and masato; the first one is a drink made by germinating
maize, and the second one is made from fermented cassava root.
