La ciudad de Cuzco-Machu Picchu

Cuzco está situado al sur de los Andes peruanos (3250 msnm) y es una de las ciudades más
importantes del país. Cuzco fue la capital del Tahuantinsuyo, uno de los imperios más
importantes precolombinos y era conocida por los incas como la “ciudad sagrada”. La ciudad
del Cuzco pertenece a la lista del Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco desde 1983 y es
la primera ciudad turística del país. La palabra Cuzco tiene como origen la palabra quechua
Qosqo que significa “ombligo del mundo”, acertado nombre ya que durante la época en la
que fue capital del imperio incaico controlaba la red de caminos que unía lo que es en la
actualidad prácticamente toda Sudamérica ya que el imperio abarcaba desde el sur de
Colombia hasta el norte de Argentina.

La principal atracción de Cuzco es la ciudadela de Machu Picchu, descubierta en 1911 por el

estadounidense Hiram Bingham. Al igual que la ciudad de Cuzco, el santuario histórico de
Machu Picchu está inscrito en la lista del Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco desde
1983. En quechua, Machu Picchu significa “montaña vieja” y esta ciudadela, ubicada en la
cima de una montaña en la provincia de Urubamba, es considerada como una obra maestra de
la arquitectura e ingeniería. Se cree que fue un centro de culto y de observación astronómica
o el recinto privado de la familia del Inca Pachacútec, quien fue el primer emperador inca. En
el 2007 Machu Picchu fue elegida una de las siete maravillas del mundo moderno y en este
año, el 2011, se celebran los 100 años de su descubrimiento.

The City of Cuzco-Machu Picchu

Cuzco is located south of the Peruvian Andes (3,250 miles above sea level) and is one of the
country's major cities. Cuzco was the capital of Tahuantinsuyo, one of the most important
pre-Columbian empires, and was known by the Incas as the "holy city." The city of Cuzco
has been on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO since 1983 and was the first tourist resort
in the country. The word "Cuzco" has its origin in the Quechua language, "Qosqo," meaning
"center of the world," a proper name because during the time that it was the capital of the
Inca empire, it controlled the network of roads that linked what is now virtually all of South
America as the empire covered from southern Colombia to northern Argentina.

Cuzco's main attraction is the citadel of Machu Picchu, discovered in 1911 by the American

list of World Heritage of UNESCO since 1983. In Quechua, Machu Picchu means "old
mountain," and this citadel, located on top of a mountain in the province of Urubamba, is
considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. It is believed that Machu Picchu
was a center of worship and astronomical observation or private precincts of the family of
Inca Pachacutec, who was the first Inca emperor. In 2007, Machu Picchu was elected one of
the seven wonders of the modern world, and in this year, 2011, we will celebrate the one
hundred years of its discovery.
