The month of October is known as the purple month, mainly in Lima, because of the
celebrations of the Lord of Miracles.
The Lord of Miracles is an image of Christ on the cross painted on the wall of the Shrine of
the Nazarene in Lima by a slave brought from Angola during the colonial time. The image
remained on the wall despite numerous attempts to erase it. In the earthquake of 1655, many
houses collapsed, including all the buildings around the wall with the image of Christ, which
remained intact. From this event a popular faith was consolidated, and it has expanded
through the years to become the most venerated image in the city of Lima.
The procession is a distinctly Peruvian tradition and is considered one of the largest Catholic
religious manifestations in the world. During the celebration, tens of thousands of faithful
dress in purple and sing and pray beside the image. The two-ton portable platform is carried
on their shoulders down a traditional course of nearly twenty-four hours from the temple of
the Nazarene, across the area of downtown Lima, to the church of La Merced in Barrios
Altos. The Lord of the Miracles procession is the largest procession in South America and in
2010, the Lord of Miracles was named patron of Peru.
