Iquitos es una ciudad situada a orillas de la margen izquierda del río Amazonas, al noroeste
del Perú. Es la capital del departamento de Loreto y de la provincia de Maynas. Es la ciudad
más grande de la Amazonía peruana y la sexta ciudad más poblada del país. Debido a su
dificultad geográfica, la comunicación de Iquitos con el resto del país es por vía aérea o
fluvial, con la sola excepción de la carretera a Nauta, una pequeña ciudad a unos 105 km al
sur.

Iquitos estuvo olvidado por años hasta que en 1883 se inició en esta ciudad la era y auge del
caucho y convirtió al pueblo en lo que es en la actualidad. Iquitos se convirtió en el centro de
explotación de caucho de la Amazonía peruana y llegó a ser una de las ciudades más ricas del
continente. Durante ésta época la ciudad prosperó, algunos amasaron inmensas fortunas y se
inició la construcción de casas fastuosas. El fin de la era del caucho llegó en 1912.

En la actualidad, Iquitos es un importante destino turístico, ideal para los amantes del
ecoturismo. La selva amazónica es la reserva natural de vida más extensa y variada de la
tierra y todo aquel que visita esta zona podrá disfrutar y apreciar de la naturaleza desde un
paseo en lancha hasta un crucero por el Amazonas. El visitante también tendrá la oportunidad
de hospedarse en albergues algunos muy cercanos a parques y reservas naturales como la del
Pacaya Samiria. Iquitos es una de las zonas con mayor biodiversidad del mundo y
ciertamente un destino con muchísimo que ofrecer.

Iquitos

Iquitos is a city located along the left bank of the Amazon River in northwestern Peru. It is
the capital of Loreto and the province of Maynas. It is the largest city in the Peruvian
Amazon and the sixth most populous city. Due to its geographical challenges, Iquitos's
communication with the rest of the country is by air or river, with the exception of the road to
Nauta, a small town about 105 kilometers south.

Iquitos was forgotten for years until the rubber boom began there in 1883, after which the
town became what it is today. Iquitos became the center of rubber exploitation in the
Peruvian Amazon and became one of the richest cities in the continent. During this time, the

city prospered, and some amassed huge fortunes and started to construct of lavish homes.
The end of the rubber era came in 1912.

Today, Iquitos is a major tourist destination, ideal for lovers of ecotourism. The Amazon
forest is the nature reserve with more varied wildlife than any other, and all who visit this
area can enjoy and appreciate nature from a boat cruise on the Amazon. Visitors also have
the opportunity to stay in shelters, some very close to parks and nature reserves such as the
Pacaya Samiria. Iquitos is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world and certainly a
destination with much to offer.

Iquitos is hot and humid year round. It is considered the largest continental city unreachable by road.
There are numerous flights from Lima, the capital. You can also get to Iquitos by boat from any
navigable port on the Amazon River. The most common way to move around town is by motocarro,
"a motorcycle" with a small passenger cabin in the back.
