Fiesta de la Candelaria

La Fiesta de la Candelaria es una festividad en honor a la Virgen de la Candelaria, patrona de

la ciudad de Puno, Perú. La devoción hacia la Virgen de la Candelaria se da en casi todos los
países de Latinoamérica. Su fiesta se celebra el 2 de febrero en toda la iglesia católica,
aunque en Puno la celebración dura alrededor de 18 días. El día central de la fiesta es el 2 de
febrero, en el cual se celebra una misa y procesión de la Virgen de la Candelaria en las calles
de la ciudad de Puno. Si el día de la virgen no cae en domingo, entonces la fiesta se traslada
al domingo anterior al día central de la festividad.

Esta fiesta representa la más grande e importante manifestación artística del Perú y a su vez
es una de las fiestas más significativas de Sudamérica. En esta celebración participan
alrededor de 60 mil músicos y danzantes los cuales se encargan de animar distintos concursos
y pasacalles.
La expresión dancística y musical está organizada por la Federación Regional de Folclore y
Cultura de Puno y convoca la presencia de más de 150 conjuntos de artistas.

El poder participar en esta celebración, ya sea como participante o espectador, es una gran
oportunidad de poder admirar las manifestaciones artístico-culturales propias de esta zona,
como son las culturas quechua, aymara y mestiza del altiplano andino. La Fiesta de la
Candelaria fue declarada patrimonio cultural del Perú por el Instituto Nacional de Cultura del
Perú en el año 2003.

"Fiesta de la Candelaria"

The "Fiesta de la Candelaria" is a holiday in honor of the "Virgen de la Candelaria," the

patron saint of the city of Puno, Peru. Devotion to the Virgin of Candelaria occurs in almost
all Latin American countries. Her feast is celebrated on February second in the whole
Catholic Church, although in Puno the celebration lasts about eighteen days. The main day of
the feast is on February second, including a mass and procession of the Virgin of Candelaria
on the streets of the city of Puno. If the day of the Virgin does not fall on a Sunday, the
celebration moves to the Sunday before the main day of the festival.

This festivity represents the largest and most important artistic manifestation in Peru and is

also one of the most significant festivals in South America. In this celebration, about sixty
thousand musicians and dancers bring to life various competitions and parades.

The dancing and musical representations are organized by the Regional Federation of
Folklore and Culture of Puno, which announces the presence of more than 150 groups of
artists.

Joining in this celebration, either as a participant or a spectator, is a great opportunity to

admire the artistic and cultural manifestations typical of this area, such as the cultures of
Quechua, Aymara, and the mixed Andean highlands. The "Fiesta de la Candelaria" was
declared a cultural heritage of Peru by the National Institute of Culture of Peru in 2003.

A Peruvian Mix of Spiritual and Pagan Traditions

In the Fiesta de la Candelaria, Catholic rites go hand in hand with pagan deities. A legend says that
everything started when a group of miners, trapped down a mine, resigned their souls to the Virgin of
Candelaria. The main dance of the festival is the diablada or "dance of the demons," a dance that is
named for the mask and devil suits that the dancers wear.
