International Festival of Vendimia
Every year during the first days of March, the International Festival of Vendimia is
celebrated in the city of Ica. It was created to celebrate the abundance of grapes and wine in
the region of Ica (four hours south of Lima Road).
The Festival of Vendimia has been organized since 1958 and has since paid tribute to the
vine plant from which we get the juicy grape. The Festival of Vendimia includes music
festivals with the participation of national and foreign artists, exhibitions, float parades,
competitions, and parties where they dance the Afro-Peruvian "festejo."
During the holidays, there will be different competitions such as the "marinera" contest, the
sandboard championship, and the Horse Contest, among others.
One of the biggest attractions of the festival is the election and coronation of the Queen of
the Harvest, who, with her court, is responsible for the famous "grape stomping" to extract
the juice of the grape, which later will become the liquor. Another major attraction is the
carnival parade. Beauty queens parade on floats while throwing grapes to the public.
Different entities, including schools and universities, also prepare colorful floats for the
parade.
During the days of the Festival of Vendimia, attendees also have the opportunity to taste the
best "pisco" and wine produced in the country.

Can You Move to the Music?
As it name suggests, the festejo is "festive music"; in Spanish, festejo means "celebration." The festejo
is the most joyous of Afro-Peruvian music styles. The movements are extremely sensual and
undulating, and every sound triggers a movement.
