IV.

SHALL TEENAGERS HELP WITH THE HOUSEWORK?

My mom sometimes makes me clean my room or the flat in general, I
never go shopping since we live in a rural area and I can’t drive a car, I
rarely walk the dog and I always stay in my bedroom watching TV or
surfing online. I never cook, actually I hate cooking and I rarely help
with the dishes. I am freaking lazy. I do not participate in the household
and I don’t help my mom and stepdad on own initiative.
Janet Long, 14
My name’s Jack. I live with parents and little brother. My mom and dad
work full-time, so I have to help with the house chores without being
asked. I cook the main meal for all the family, I do the washing before
eating. When I finish, I do my homework and watch TV for a while.
After that, I look after my little brother until my mom comes back home.
At 7:00, I prepare the dinner and we talk about our day. Teenagers
must help all the time.
Jack Ellis, 15

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In order to learn, you must attend school each day. What would happen if you stay in bed and don’t go to
school? You couldn’t learn new things; your parents probably get mad and you probably get in trouble.
Fortunately, you can get out of bed to go to school each day and learn new things. You are responsible and
being able to go to school is your right. What are rights and responsibilities?
A right is something every human being deserves no matter who they are or where they live. Everyone has a
right to go to school, have food and clothing, and much more. However, along with the rights come
responsibilities. Responsibilities are the things a person should do or think about, and may have effect on
other people. So, rights and responsibilities are connected with each other.
For example, even though you have a right to go to school, it is still your responsibility to get out of bed and
go. You have a right to healthy food, but is your responsibility to be home for dinner when a parent tells you to
be there. At home you may have a right to stay up late nights, but you may also have a responsibility to do
your chores and homework each day, and if you don’t, you can’t stay up late.
What would happen if people don’t go to school? There would be no learning and may jobs would remain hard
to fill. For example, if a mechanic doesn’t learn how to fix cars, everyone might have to walk. The mechanic is
responsible, goes to school to learn about cars, and is able to fix cars.
There are many rights and responsibilities that each person has in a community. Not everyone may have the
same rights and responsibilities either. For example, you probably do not have the responsibility of shopping
for groceries, but you may have the responsibility of helping to carry them in the house. Adults have the right
to vote, but you do not because you are still too young.
