Abstract
In the Progreso town center, Asillo-Azángaro; the contamination of the Ramis river is
witnessed, affecting agricultural activity and the health of peasants. The objective of this
article is: Identify the origin, determine those involved and specify the level of the
conflict. The type of research was qualitative-quantitative, because an observational,
descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out. The sample consisted
of 106 peasant residents. And an interview was applied. The origin of the socio-
environmental conflict was due to the contamination of the Ramis River with toxic
tailings due to mining exploitation in the “Rinconada” and “Lunar de Oro” mines,
which deteriorate agricultural production and peasant health; those involved were the
residents versus the formal and informal mining companies; regional and national
government. The organization of the protests were the communal and district
assemblies, due to the aggression and discontent, the affected population fought in
opposition to formal and informal mining, regional and national government, for the
closure of mining and socio-environmental remediation; The means of confrontation
were strikes, the seizure of the Manco Cápac-Juliaca airport, and the blockade of
highways. In conclusion, the socio-environmental conflict due to the contamination of
the "Ramis" river affects the inhabitants, had a destructive origin for agricultural
production and human health, those directly involved were the inhabitants versus the
Ananea miners and indirectly the State authorities and national government, conflict
with escalation manifested itself at a medium level in the Progreso town center, Asillo-
Azángaro.
