hesitated to annex the new Texas Republic because antislavery groups in
the United States opposed annexation.

– Mostly more aristocratic and wealthier.
– Generally from the East.

President Harrison Or… not?
• Unfortunately, Harrison died one month after taking
office.
• He was the first President to die in office.
• John Tyler took over as the new President.
• Harrison’s death crushed Whig plans to reinstate the
U.S. bank as Tyler vetoed the bill to create a new
bank.
Desafortunadamente, Harrison murió un mes después de asumir el
cargo.
Fue el primer presidente en morir en el cargo.
John Tyler asumió el cargo de nuevo presidente.
La muerte de Harrison aplastó los planes whig de restablecer el
banco estadounidense, ya que Tyler vetó el proyecto de ley para
President Tyler….
John Tyler was a southern Democrat who didn’t like Jackson, so he ran with
the Whigs. His Presidency was a disaster.
• On every issue, he was at odds with the Whigs
• He vetoed every major Whig bill passed in Congress
• He was expelled from the Whig party
• His entire cabinet resigned (except Daniel Webster)
• Whigs fought amongst themselves and got little accomplished.
John Tyler era un demócrata del sur al que no le gustaba Jackson, así que se

President James Knox Polk
In the election of 1844, James Polk defeated Henry Clay to become the 11th
President.
Polk was supported by Andrew Jackson, among others, and was a firm believer
in Manifest Destiny.
Manifest Destiny was the belief that the US should expand into Texas,
Oregon, and California- essentially controlling the continent “from sea to
shining sea,”and that God’s divine plan was for the US to “tame” the
frontier.
En las elecciones de 1844, James Polk derrotó a Henry Clay para convertirse en el 11º
presidente.
Polk fue apoyado por Andrew Jackson, entre otros, y era un firme creyente en el Destino
Manifiesto.
