FATHER'S DAY
History of Father’s Day The first event held to specifically honor fathers
was held at a West Virginia church on July 5, 1908. It was a sermon to
commemorate the death of 362 men in an explosion at the Fairmont Coal
Company mines in Monongah. The following year, a woman in Spokane,
Washington, who had been raised by a single father, a widower, tried to
establish a special day to honor fathers. She was able to garner a lot of
grassroots support, and the first Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910 in the state of
Washington. The day gained popularity, and celebrations grew. Most notably, merchants promoted
it as a way to boost business during the Great Depression, and during World War II, advertisers
promoted Father’s Day as a way to honor American military troops. By the middle of the 20th century,
Father’s Day had become a national institution, However, Father’s Day wasn’t made a national
holiday until 1972.

HALLOWEEN VOCABULARY
The History of Halloween
In the beginning Halloween was a harvest festival. The Celts (who lived in Ireland, the United
Kingdom and France) marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter with this harvest
festival. They called the festival Samhain (sow-in) and this translated to “the end of summer”. They
believed that the festival would make their gods happy so they would protect them and their crops
during the long, hard winter. They built huge fires and burned crops and animals as sacrifices. They
wore costumes and enjoyed fortune telling.
When the Celts eventually became Christian, they started to call the first day of November “All
Saints’ Day” was also called “All-hallows”, which was and old English word. People began to call
the night before the first of November “ All- hallows Eve” and this eventually became Halloween.
People believed that ghosts walked the streets on Halloween night and they felt scared about
meeting them. They began to wear masks so that the ghosts could believe they were other spirits.
Soon, people started to wear costumes and fancy dresses and organize parties to enjoy themselves.

CHRISTMAS VOCABULARY
Dear Sally,
I want to tell you about my favourite day of the year. It’s in December. It’s Christmas. On Christmas
Day I always wake up early and I call my brother Tommy. He’s only five. Then we go to the living
room and look at the gifts under the Christmas tree but we don’t open them. We open them when
all the family is in the living room and my grandparents arrive. Me and my brother usually get lot of
toys and new clothes.
We have Christmas lunch at half past twelve. Traditionally we put a Christmas cracker next to each
plate on the table. When we pull the crackers out falls a colourful party crown, or a small toy and a
joke. My mummy always cooks a big roast turkey with gravy and roast potatoes. They’re fantastic!
She usually makes carrots, brussel sprouts and peas. My favourite food at Christmas is Christmas
pudding. It’s a dessert. It is a rich mix of dried fruits such as raisins, nuts, flour and brandy and is
round and dark brown. It’s delicious!
What’s your favourite day of the year?
Write me soon. Susan
