Failure in Business: the Best Teacher

Outline

I. Introduction

GI 1: The story of Coronel Sanders is admirable. He is the person who founded KFC, one of the most
famous chicken fast food chain in the world.

GI 2: He is an example of failure in business, since he experimented with many professions in his life
such as: lawyer, insurance broker, obstetrician, firefighter, and some more.

GI 3: He never gave up, even if he was around 40 - 50 years old when he decided to dabble in
gastronomy.

Hook: It is common to see people give up their dreams to run a business and decide to be part of one;
even when they may not be happy, nor the remuneration is very high.

Thesis Statement: Even when many young entrepreneurs think that it is very risky to enter the
business world, failure in business could be the best teacher to achieve success in the future, since we
can learn from our mistakes and we would have new opportunities to set new goals.

II. Body

A. Main Point 1: The feedback from customers, the experience we earn and the knowledge we get
allow us to learn from our mistakes.

1. Supporting Idea 1: Getting feedback from customers is a great way to improve some areas
where the business is failing.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

a. Feedback does not only help when it comes to improvements, but also new strategies to
build customers loyalty.

b. Because of the feedback we can analyze the areas where improvements are needed.

c. For example, at restaurants it is very common to see surveys about the service, the attention
or the food.

2. Supporting Idea 2: The experience we get when we run a business, allow us to be more
efficient in terms of time and quality.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

a. Total Quality Management is a concept that is very known by experts in the field, as it is an
applied strategy for internships in business management.

b. When we have previous experiences, we know what our mistakes were, what the costumers
ask for and the changes that are needed.

c. For example, due to the current situation, a lot of businesses have to improve their
participation in social networks.

3. Supporting Idea 3: When we start a business, it is necessary to have previous knowledge about
the market.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

a. For experts in the field of business, knowledge about the market such as: economic,
political, cultural aspects, and many more, are essential in order not to have losses.

b. It is necessary to have previous knowledge, because otherwise it could be difficult to reach

the desired audience.

c. For example, if we do not know our desired audience, we would not able to identify our
potential customers and we would have financial losses.

CS: There are three main ideas that many business experts know when it comes to reducing costs
and minimizing errors, these are: the experience and knowledge that we acquire when we run a
company, as well as feedback.

B. Main Point 2: We would have new opportunities to set new goals, since we would be able to plan a
better strategy to get to the costumers, we would be able to innovate in order to keep the interest of
people and expand your ideas about new alliances with partners.

1. Supporting Idea 1: We would be able to plan a better strategy to get to the costumers.

a. Planning and building short-term strategies are common practices for businesses if they
want to achieve certain goals.

b. Because of this, we could create new ways to improve the business mission, vision and
values.

c. For example, during this quarantine, a lot of businesses have to adapt to the changes in the
customers preferences, therefore, they should have new strategies.

2. Supporting Idea 2: We would be able to innovate in order to keep the interest of people.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

a. Innovation is a term that has recently been taken as an important factor in business,
because within the life cycle of a business it previously ended in decline, however today
innovation is considered as an option in the last point of this cycle and then it would allow the
cycle to start again.

b. We would be able to innovate in order to keep the interest of people, because this is a way to
present new ideas and creatively.

c. For example, currently with the pandemic we are facing, many companies that did not
have a delivery service, a website or an app, have found it necessary to implement these
resources so that they do not go bankrupt.

3. Supporting Idea 3: We could expand our ideas about new alliances with partners.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

a. Alliances have been an important part not only of our daily life, but of many companies and
even countries. These help us to improve various aspects reciprocally such as
relationships and investments.

b. Because of this, two or more companies can have a lot of benefits such as: more
investments and wider and diverse opinions.

c. For example, LAN and TAM have been a successful example of alliances because they
not only have helped each other, but they fused into one big company.

CS: Planning for better strategies, innovation and alliances are some important points to
consider when it comes to attracting people’s attention, reinventing a business and changing
objectives and goals.

III. Conclusion

Reworded Thesis: Although it is true that entering the subject of business for the first time can result in
failure, we can learn from our mistakes and plan new strategies to achieve our objective.

Summary of main points: As it was mentioned above, there are a few important points that we have to
consider when we fail running a business, such as: a feedback, the experience and knowledge we can
get, as well as better strategies, innovation and alliances with partners so we can succeed at running a
business.

Clincher Ideas: Running a business will never be easy, since people’s preferences and necessities are
going to constantly change depending on the circumstances and some other external factors. However,
that is the challenge all of the experts in this field have to confront. It is important to learn how to face it
and take all the information to transform it into something positive.
