Aerobic metabolism in insects
Insects are a notable exception to some of the patterns of metabolic fueling outlined above. Insect flight is a
very energy-demanding process, and one which is supplied almost entirely by aerobic metabolic pathways.
The maximum rate of oxygen consumption increases 50-fold or more between rest and take-off, and
magnetic resonance spectroscopy in resting and flying locusts has shown a 600-fold increase in ATP
production. However, relatively little energy is stored in the flight muscles themselves. The most important
energy store is the fat body, which contains fat (triacylglycerol) and glycogen, and these are broken down and
delivered to the muscles via the hemolymph. The direct substrates for aerobic respiration are the
disaccharide trehalose, the lipid diacylglycerol, and the amino acid proline. Carbohydrate is used exclusively
in many Diptera and Hymenoptera, whereas lipids (the fatty acid chains of diacylglycerol) are the main fuels
in Orthoptera and Lepidoptera. Proline is used as a fuel in insects such as the tsetse fly (Glossina) and
the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa), where it is partly oxidized to alanine (Fig. 6.15). The alanine is
transported to the fat body for the resynthesis of proline, and the acetyl-CoA required is derived from fatty
acids. Thus proline-supported insect flight can also deplete lipid stores. Insect flight muscles contain very low
concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase, and lactate is of minimal importance as a fuel. The flight muscles
are also unusual in containing only low levels of phosphagens such as phosphoarginine. This is because
insect flight muscle can shift between its resting and maximal rates of ATP production more rapidly than the
tissues of any other animals, due to its radically different oxygen transport system (see Chapter 7). It
therefore does not require significant buffering of
ATP.
