Viral receptors. Influenza virus targets cells by binding to sialic acid residues (purple diamonds) located at the
termini of oligosaccharides present on cell surface glycoproteins and glycolipids. These carbohydrates are bound by
hemagglutinin (interaction circles), one of the major proteins expressed on the surface of the virus. The other
major viral-surface protein, neuraminidase, is an enzyme that cleaves oligosaccharide chains to release the viral
particle at a later stage of the viral life cycle.
Viral receptors. (A) Influenza virus targets cells by binding to sialic acid residues located at the termini
of oligosaccharides present on cell-surface glycoproteins and glycolipids. These carbohydrates are
bound by hemagglutinin, one of the major proteins expressed on the surface of the virus. (B) When viral
replication is complete and the viral particle buds from the cell, the other major viralsurface protein,
neuraminidase, cleaves oligosaccharide chains to release the viral particle.

Cellulose breakdown by Trichonympha. (a) The termite Cryptotermes domesticus gnaws off and ingests
particles of wood, rich in cellulose. (b) Trichonympha, a protistan symbiont in the termite gut, produces
the enzyme cellulase, which breaks the (β1→4) glycosidic bonds in cellulose, making wood a source of
metabolizable sugar (glucose) for the protist and its host termite. Many invertebrates can digest cellulose,
but only a few vertebrates (the ruminants, such as cattle, sheep, and goats). The ruminants can use
cellulose as food because the first of their four stomach compartments (rumen) teems with bacteria and
protists that secrete cellulase. [Sources: (a) David McClenaghan/CSIRO Entomology. (b) Eric V.

Agarosa.

muscular.
Digitoxin is a glycoside poison that
binds to and inhibits the action of the
Na+/K+ pump in the cell membrane.
The Na+/K+ pump is essential for
maintaining the balance of these ions
across cell walls.
Digitoxin and ouabaina are used to stimulate the heart muscle. They work by binding to
the Na+/K+ ATPase and inhibiting its action. The result of this is that Na+ leaks back into
the cell. When this happens, the cell tries to maintain the osmotic balance pumping the
sodium out with the Na+/Ca2+ pump. This pumps Ca2+ into the cell, which triggers muscle
contraction.
