¿Qué son los sustantivos en inglés?

Los sustantivos en inglés, o nouns, son palabras que se refieren a personas, lugares, animales,
ideas, cosas, eventos, sustancias o cualidades. Junto a los verbos, los adverbios y los adjetivos,
conforman uno de los elementos gramaticales más importantes de la lengua inglesa. Su función
suele ser la de servir como núcleo del sujeto de la oración, sin embargo, también suele aparecer en
el predicado como objeto. De hecho, puede aparecer un sustantivo como núcleo del sujeto y otro
como objeto en el predicado. Por ejemplo:

 Como núcleo del sujeto: Jaguars are beautiful (Los jaguares son hermosos).
 Como objeto del predicado: Ramiro buys milk every day (Ramiro compra leche todos los
días).
 Sustantivo en núcleo del sujeto y en objeto del predicado: The kids are playing with the
ball (Los niños están jugando con la pelota).

Reglas:

1. Añadir una -s al final del sustantivo

 The clocks are all on the clock.
 He was such a millionaire that he collected cars.
 The girls are playing hairdresser.
 I left some papers for you to look at on the table.
 We should go over the tables in the other salon.
2. Añadir -es si la palabra acaba en -sh, -ch, -s, -x, -z
 City benches were robbed today
 today I was in the kisses stand
 The foxes are the most dangerous animal
 my mother lost her cell phone at the buses station.
 October is the witches mont
3. Añadir -es si la palabra acaba en -o
 My sister goes to Hollywood every year
 I do my English homework
 I hate food with potatoes in it
 I plant tomatoes and onions in my backyard
 my aunt has a collection of dominoes.
4. Cuando la palabra acaba en -y, y va precedida de consonante se sustituye esta por una -i y
se añade -es
 I hate hearing babies’ cry
 this weekend there will be a lot of parties
 I like to spend time visiting cities
 I love the union that exists between countries in South America.
 I am afraid of flies
5. Algunas palabras que acaban en -f o -fe, hacen el plural cambiando estos por -ves
 Arabs often have up to five wives
 Young children should be kept away from knives.
 My mother lives in London.
  The thieves were caught red-handed.
 Fill the two halves of the bread with the peanut butter.
6. Algunas palabras van siempre en plural y otras siempre en singular
 One year ago today I was prescribed glasses.
 In the drawer are the scissors
 Those jeans don't fit me anymore
 Most of the day I listen to music
 I spend a lot of money on food for stray dogs.
 I like to feel peace in my mind and heart
