Would

¿Cuándo se usa?
Se usa cuando queremos ser muy educados al pedirle algo a alguien o al invitar a
alguien a que haga algo. Cuando va acompañado del verbo to like se suele traducir
por querría, quisiera, me gustaría, etc. 
¿Cómo se usa?
Would es un verbo modal, y por lo tanto no cambia para la tercera persona del plural (I
would, She would...) y el verbo que le sigue siempre va sin to.
Afirmativa
 
Solemos contraer would y ponerlo como una d con un apóstrofo. En este caso se
pronuncia como una d normal y corriente. Por ejemplo, I'd sería /áid/.

Querría un café.

Negativa
 
Wouldn't es la forma contraída de would y not, que se usa muchísimo más que la
forma sin contraer. Se pronuncia /u-udnt/.

A ella no le gustaría.
 
Interrogativa
 
Y en preguntas, would funciona como un auxiliar y se coloca al principio del todo.

Would para pasado

Would tiene diferentes usos. Con would podemos pedir algo o hacer el condicional
irreal pero también podemos usarla hablar del pasado.
La estructura es > Sujeto + would + verbo sin to.   

Entonces, ¿Cuándo usamos would con significado de pasado?

Pues usamos would para hablar en pasado cuando hablamos de acciones que
realizábamos en el pasado de forma repetitiva. Normalmente este uso equivale al
pretérito imperfecto en español.

 When I was young I would play football with my friends almost every Saturday. -
Cuando yo era joven jugaba al fútbol con mis amigos casi todos los sábados.

Pero podemos expresar el mismo significado utilizando used to.

 When I was young I used to play football with my friends almost every
Saturday. - Cuando yo era joven jugaba al fútbol con mis amigos casi
todos los sábados.

Used to vs Would
Used to equivale el pretérito imperfecto o solía, solías, solíamos etc.

Hay una diferencia entre would y used to. He dicho que would se usa solo para hablar
de acciones que ocurrieron en el pasado de forma repetitiva. Como son acciones solo
se utiliza would con verbos de acción o para decirlo de otra manera con verbos de
movimiento, por ejemplo, play, run, sing, walk, come, go, etc. Esto implica que no
podemos usar would cuando queremos hablar sobre las condiciones o estados en el
pasado. Además, no se puede usar would con stative verbs. (Stative verbs son
verbos que describen estados, situaciones y condiciones y no se usan en su forma
continua.)

Entonces, no podemos decir;

 He would live in London in the 80’s.

Tenemos que usar used to,

 He used to live in London in the 80’s. - Él vivía (solía vivir) en Londres en los
años 80.

En cambio, used to se puede usar con todo tipo de verbos.

Abajo hay algunas frases en las que "used to" siempre es aplicable, pero no would.

 When Mary was a child she used to / would cry a lot. - Cuando Mary era
niña lloraba mucha.
 When I was little, I used to be afraid of the dark. - Cuando yo era pequeño,
tenía miedo de la oscuridad.
 When they Mrs Smith lived in the village, she used to / would play tennis a
lot. - Cuando la señora smith vivía en el pueblo, jugaba muchísimo al tenis.
 He used to / would drink a lot when he was at university. - Él bebía mucho
cuando estaba en la universidad.
 There used to be three cinemas in the town, but now there is only one left. -
Había tres cines en el pueblo, pero ahora sola queda uno.
 Years ago he used to have a motorbike. - Hace años tenía una moto.

Actividad 2.

Complete the sentences using the verb in brackets with the correct form of used
to or would. If both used to and would are possible, use WOULD.

When I was a child we 1   (live) in a cabin in the mountains. Back then,
we 2   (not have) much money; that’s why we 3   (have) vegetables
and chickens in our back garden. Every day we 4   (get up) very early and my
father 5   (take) some eggs for breakfast.
