The Special Customers

Los clientes especiales

'What about the diamond rings? ' said a voice.

¿Qué hay de los anillos de diamantes? ' dijo una voz.

It was Dave Slatin. He was laughing.
Era Dave Slatin. Se reía.

'I left the door open for you,' he said. 'I wanted you to
go into this room this morning! '

—Te dejé la puerta abierta —dijo—. ¡Quería que

entraras en esta habitación esta mañana! '

Anna was frightened, but she tried not to show her fear.
Anna estaba asustada, pero trató de no mostrar su
miedo.
'You haven't found the diamonds,' Dave said again.

—No has encontrado los diamantes —volvió a decir

Dave—.

Anna remembered Greta Gordon's diamond rings. Were

they in this room too?
Anna recordó los anillos de diamantes de Greta Gordon.
¿También estaban en esta habitación?
'Here,' said Dave. He came into the room and picked up
an old box. He took out the rings and threw them on the
table.

—Aquí —dijo Dave—. Entró en la habitación y cogió una

caja vieja. Sacó los anillos y los arrojó sobre la mesa.

'They aren't yours,' said Anna. 'They belong to Greta

Gordon. '
—No son tuyos —dijo Anna. Pertenecen a Greta
Gordon.'
'They belong to me,' laughed Dave. 'She gave them to
me. '
"Me pertenecen", se rió Dave. Ella me los dio. '

'But why? ' asked Anna. 'Why? Why did Greta Gordon
give you those diamonds? And all this money. Who gave
you the money? '
'¿Pero por qué? ', preguntó Ana. '¿Por qué? ¿Por qué
Greta Gordon te dio esos diamantes? Y todo este dinero.
¿Quién te dio el dinero? '

'My Special Customers! ' said Dave. 'My Special

Customers gave me the money. It's mine now. '
'¡Mis Clientes Especiales! dijo Dave. 'Mis Clientes
Especiales me dieron el dinero. Ahora es mio. '
'Mike Bailey and Mr Riseman gave you all this money? '
asked Anna.
¿Mike Bailey y el señor Riseman te dieron todo este
dinero? ', preguntó Ana.
'Yes,' said Dave 'You have seen some of my Special
Customers, not all of them.

'Sí', dijo Dave. 'Usted ha visto a algunos de mis Clientes

Especiales, no a todos.

'But why do they come? ' Anna asked again.

'¿Pero por qué vienen? —volvió a preguntar Ana.

'These people come to me for help,' replied Dave

Slatin. 'I help them and they pay me. '

"Estas personas vienen a mí en busca de ayuda",

respondió Dave Slatin. Yo les ayudo y ellos me pagan. '

'But how do you help them? ' asked Anna.

'¿Pero cómo los ayudas? ', preguntó Ana.

Dave Slatin picked up the beautiful doll with the broken

arm.
Dave Slatin recogió la hermosa muñeca con el brazo
roto.
'Do you remember Joanna Leigh? ' he asked Anna.

¿Recuerdas a Joanna Leigh? —le preguntó a Ana—.

Anna thought for a moment.

Anna pensó por un momento.

'Joanna Leigh? ' she said. 'Yes, of course I remember
her. She's the actress who broke her arm. Greta Gordon
got her part. '
¿Joanna Leigh? ' ella dijo. 'Sí, por supuesto que la
recuerdo. Ella es la actriz que se rompió el brazo. Greta
Gordon obtuvo su parte. '

'That's right,' said Dave Slatin. 'This doll is Joanna Leigh.'

—Así es —dijo Dave Slatin—. Esta muñeca es Joanna
Leigh.
Anna felt more afraid. What kind of man was Dave
Slatin?
Anna sintió más miedo. ¿Qué clase de hombre era Dave
Slatin?
Dave Slatin pointed to a torn photograph in the football
book. 'Who's that, Anna?' he asked.
Dave Slatin señaló una fotografía rota en el libro de
fútbol. ¿Quién es, Ana? preguntó.
Anna remembered the face. She had seen it on TV.

Anna recordó la cara. Ella lo había visto en la televisión.

'Brian Thomas,' she replied. 'He's a goalkeeper. '

—Brian Thomas —respondió ella. Es portero. '

'He was a goalkeeper,' said Dave Slatin.

"Era portero", dijo Dave Slatin.

Anna was terribly frightened now. Dave Slatin was an evil

man.

Anna estaba terriblemente asustada ahora. Dave Slatin

era un hombre malvado.

Dave Slatin moved close to Anna. He picked up the

broken aeroplane.

Dave Slatin se acercó a Anna. Recogió el avión averiado.

'And what do you think this is? ' he asked Anna.

'¿Y qué crees que es esto? —le preguntó a Ana—.

Anna knew the answer, but she was too afraid to
speak.
 Anna sabía la respuesta, pero tenía demasiado
miedo para hablar.
Dave Slatin took Anna's arm and held it
tightly. Anna tried to move away. Dave Slatin laughed
and held Anna more tightly.

Dave Slatin tomó el brazo de Anna y lo sujetó con

fuerza. Anna trató de alejarse. Dave Slatin se rió y abrazó
a Anna con más fuerza.

'Listen, Anna,' he said quietly. 'I want you. I need you.

—Escucha, Anna —dijo en voz baja. 'Te deseo. Te
necesito.
Marry me, Anna. Don't marry Peter. Marry me. '

Cásate conmigo, Ana. No te cases con Pedro. Cásate

conmigo. '

'No, no,' she cried. 'Let me go. Let me go. '

-No, no -gritó ella-. 'Déjame ir. Déjame ir. '

'But Anna, you still don't understand,' said Dave Slatin.

"Pero Anna, todavía no entiendes", dijo Dave Slatin.

'I have strange powers. I can give you everything you

want.'
'Tengo poderes extraños. Puedo darte todo lo que
quieras.
He looked into Anna's eyes. 'And my children will have
these powers too,' he continued. 'I will give you money
and diamonds. And you, Anna, you will give me children.

Miró a los ojos de Anna. 'Y mis hijos también tendrán

estos poderes', continuó. Te daré dinero y diamantes. Y
tú, Anna, me darás hijos.

Anna was terrified now. She kicked Dave Slatin very hard
and he let go of her hand. Anna moved quickly. She ran
out of the Special Orders room through the front of the
shop and out onto the street. She ran all the way home.

Anna estaba aterrorizada ahora. Le dio una patada muy

fuerte a Dave Slatin y él le soltó la mano. Anna se movió
rápidamente. Salió corriendo de la sala de pedidos
especiales por el frente de la tienda y salió a la calle.
Corrió todo el camino a casa.
