A Beautiful Customer

Un hermoso cliente
For three months, everything was normal.

Durante tres meses, todo fue normal.

Then, one day in April, an unusual customer came into
the shop. The new customer was a very beautiful
woman. She was wearing expensive clothes and arrived
in a large car.

Entonces, un día de abril, un cliente inusual entró en la

tienda. El nuevo cliente era una mujer muy hermosa.
Llevaba ropa cara y llegó en un coche grande.
'Is this The Corner Shop? the woman asked. She looked
round and seemed a little surprise.
'¿Es esta la tienda de la esquina? preguntó la mujer. Miró
a su alrededor y pareció un poco sorprendida.
'Yes,' replied Anna. This is The Comer Shop. Its the only
shop in the village.
"Sí", respondió Ana. Esta es la tienda Comer. Es la única
tienda en el pueblo.
'I'm looking for Mr Slatin, the owner of the shop,' said
the woman.
—Estoy buscando al señor Slatin, el dueño de la tienda
—dijo la mujer—.
'I think he's upstairs,' said Anna. 'I'll go and get
him. Does he know your name?
"Creo que está arriba", dijo Anna. Iré a buscarlo. ¿Él sabe
tu nombre?

'Yes, I think so,' was the reply. Tell him...' The woman
stopped.

'Sí, creo que sí', fue la respuesta. Dile...' La mujer se

detuvo.

Tell him Miss Gordon is here. Miss Greta Gordon.

Dígale que la señorita Gordon está aquí. Señorita Greta
Gordon.
Anna was amazed. 'Are you Greta Gordon, the film star?

Ana estaba asombrada. '¿Eres Greta Gordon, la estrella

de cine?

'Yes, that´s right.´

'Sí, así es.'
The woman smiled, but she was nervous.
La mujer sonrió, pero estaba nerviosa.´

'Wait a minute,' said Anna. 'I'll tell Mr Slatin that you're

here.

—Espera un momento —dijo Anna. Le diré al señor

Slatin que estás aquí.

Anna ran to the bottom of the stairs and called 'Dave!

Dave! There's someone to see you!

Anna corrió hasta el final de las escaleras y llamó '¡Dave!

'Who is it? asked Dave from upstairs.
'¿Quién es? preguntó Dave desde arriba.
'Miss Greta Gordon! shouted Anna. 'It's Greta
Gordon! The film star!
¡Señorita Greta Gordon! gritó Ana. ¡Es Greta Gordon! ¡La
estrella de cine!
'I'm coming! he said, and he came down immediately.

'¡Ya voy! dijo, y bajó inmediatamente.

'I'm pleased to meet you, Miss Gordon,' he said.
—Encantado de conocerla, señorita Gordon —dijo.
'Good morning,' said Greta Gordon. She and Dave shook
hands. She had beautiful hands and she was wearing
beautiful diamond rings! Anna had never seen so many
diamonds before.
—Buenos días —saludó Greta Gordon. Ella y Dave se
dieron la mano. ¡Tenía hermosas manos y llevaba
hermosos anillos de diamantes! Anna nunca había visto
tantos diamantes antes.

Miss Gordon looked round. 'Is this where you work, Mr

Slatin?' she asked. Once again, she seemed nervous.

La señorita Gordon miró a su alrededor. —¿Es aquí

donde trabaja, señor Slatin? ella preguntó. Una vez más,
parecía nerviosa.
'Yes,' said Dave. 'It's a small place, but it's big enough for
me. Please follow me, Miss Gordon.´

Anna was surprised. Dave and Greta Gordon did not

know each other. He did not call her 'Greta', and she did
not call him 'Dave'. He seemed to be in a hurry, and she
seemed to be frightened.
Ana se sorprendió. Dave y Greta Gordon no se conocían.
Él no la llamó 'Greta', y ella no lo llamó 'Dave'. Él parecía
tener prisa y ella parecía asustada.

Anna watched them. Dave and Greta Gordon went to the

back of the shop and into the Special Orders room.

Anna los observó. Dave y Greta Gordon fueron a la parte

Greta Gordon was a Special Order customer! Anna

thought that was very strange. She wanted to tell
someone about Greta Gordon. Anna loved films. She
wanted to tell Peter about the film start. But she had to
stay in the stop.

pensó que eso era muy extraño. Quería contarle a
alguien sobre Greta Gordon. Anna amaba las películas.

Ten minutes later, Greta Gordon came out of the Special

Orders room. Dave went straight upstairs and Greta
Gordon came to the front of the shop.
Diez minutos después, Greta Gordon salió de la sala de
Órdenes Especiales. Dave subió directamente las
escaleras y Greta Gordon llegó al frente de la tienda.
The film star looked terrible! She was pale. She was
crying. Her eyes were red with tears.
¡La estrella de cine se veía terrible! Estaba pálida. Ella

'What's wrong? asked Anna. 'Can I help you, Miss
Gordon?

'No, thanks. I'm all right,' said Greta Gordon.

'No, gracias. Estoy bien', dijo Greta Gordon.

'Do you want to sit down? said Anna.

'¿Quieres sentarte? dijo Ana.

She got a chair and the film star sat down.

Consiguió una silla y la estrella de cine se sentó.

'Shall I get the doctor? said Anna.

'¿Voy a llamar al médico? dijo Ana.

'No! No!' said Greta. 'Please tell no one about my visit

here. Please tell no one.

'¡No! ¡No!' dijo Greta. Por favor, no le cuentes a nadie

sobre mi visita aquí. Por favor, no se lo digas a nadie.
Anna was disappointed. She wanted to tell everyone
about Greta Gordon. She wanted to tell everyone about
her famous customer.

Ana estaba decepcionada. Quería contarles a todos

sobre Greta Gordon. Quería contarles a todos sobre su
famoso cliente.
'I want to give you something,' said Greta Gordon.
'Here's a photograph of me. I'll sign it.

"Quiero darte algo", dijo Greta Gordon. Aquí hay una

fotografía mía. Lo firmaré.

She signed the photograph and gave it to Anna.

Firmó la fotografía y se la dio a Anna.

'Please keep this,' said Greta. 'And please keep our

secret. Please don't tell anyone.

´All right,´ said Anna. ´I promise.´

The film star kissed Anna. She held Anna's hands.

La estrella de cine besó a Anna. Sostuvo las manos de
Anna.
What a beautiful woman, thought Anna. And what
beautiful hands!
Qué hermosa mujer, pensó Anna. ¡Y qué manos más
bonitas!
Then Anna noticed something. The diamond rings were
gone.
Entonces Anna notó algo. Los anillos de diamantes se habían
ido.
