Arthur Riseman
Arturo Riseman
It was October. It was cold and wet. Anna was not very
busy at the shop. She was very unhappy. She was a
different girl. She seemed older. She did not go out
much. She looked ill.
Era octubre. Hacía frío y estaba húmedo. Anna no
estaba muy ocupada en la tienda. Ella era muy infeliz.
Ella era una chica diferente. Parecía mayor. Ella no
salía mucho. Parecía enferma.
Most of the villagers knew that Anna had quarrelled with
Peter. They also knew that she had been to London with
Dave. But no one was able to help Anna. She did not
talk to anyone. Before, she had been a happy, smiling
girl. Now she was sad and lonely.
La mayoría de los aldeanos sabían que Anna se había
peleado con Peter. También sabían que había estado
en Londres con Dave. Pero nadie pudo ayudar a Anna.
Ella no hablaba con nadie. Antes, había sido una niña
feliz y sonriente. Ahora estaba triste y sola.
She went to the shop every day. She was waiting for
another Special Customer.
Iba a la tienda todos los días. Ella estaba esperando a
otro Cliente Especial.
Anna did not wait long.It was the middle of the
month. Anna was alone in the shop. It was almost
lunchtime. A middleaged gentleman came in. He was a
big man with a very large moustache. He was well
dressed and he was carrying a large briefcase.
Anna no esperó mucho. Era mediados de mes. Anna
estaba sola en la tienda. Era casi la hora del almuerzo.
Entró un señor de mediana edad. Era un hombre
corpulento con un bigote muy grande. Estaba bien
vestido y llevaba un maletín grande.
'Good morning, miss,' he said politely.
—Buenos días, señorita —dijo cortésmente.
'Good morning, sir,' said Anna. 'Can I help you? '
—Buenos días, señor —dijo Anna. '¿Puedo ayudarte? '
Anna was very polite too. She was interested in this
man.
Anna también fue muy educada. Ella estaba interesada
en este hombre.
'I'm looking for Mr David Slatin,' said the man.
—Estoy buscando al señor David Slatin —dijo el
hombre.
Anna smiled. 'Are you a salesman?' she asked.
Ana sonrió. '¿Es usted un vendedor?' ella preguntó.
She knew that he was not a salesman. He did not look
like a salesman. But she wanted to talk to the man.
Sabía que él no era un vendedor. No parecía un
vendedor. Pero ella quería hablar con el hombre.
The man smiled. 'Yes, I am a salesman,' he said.
El hombre sonrió. 'Sí, soy un vendedor', dijo.
That was not true. Anna knew that the man was lying.
Eso no era cierto. Anna sabía que el hombre estaba
mintiendo.
Then she said, 'Perhaps I can help you, sir. I usually
speak to the salesmen. '
Luego dijo: 'Tal vez pueda ayudarlo, señor. Suelo hablar
con los vendedores. '
She looked at the man's case. It had the letters
A.R.I.C.S. printed on it.
Miró el caso del hombre. Tenía las letras A.R.I.C.S.
impreso en él.
'Thank you,' said the man very politely, 'but I have a
private appointment. I've come from London and I must
see Mr Slatin.
'Gracias', dijo el hombre muy cortésmente, 'pero tengo
una cita privada. Vengo de Londres y debo ver al Sr.
Slatin.
'I'm sorry,' said Anna. 'He's very busy at the
moment. But I'll tell him you're here. What's your name,
please?
Lo siento dijo Ana. Está muy ocupado en este momento.
Pero le diré que estás aquí. ¿Cuál es tu nombre por
favor?
The man smiled. 'Roberts,' he said. 'Arthur Roberts.
El hombre sonrió. -Roberts -dijo-. 'Arthur Roberts.
Anna went to the back of the shop. Dave was coming
down the stairs.
Anna fue a la parte trasera de la tienda. Dave estaba
bajando las escaleras.
'There's a man in the shop,' said Anna. 'He wants to
speak to you. '
—Hay un hombre en la tienda —dijo Anna. Quiere
hablar contigo. '
'Thanks,' said Dave. And he went to the front of the
shop.
-Gracias -dijo Dave-. Y se dirigió al frente de la tienda.
'Good morning, Mr Riseman,' said Dave. 'I'm pleased to
meet you! '
—Buenos días, señor Riseman —saludó Dave. '¡Estoy
encantado de conocerte! '
Anna listened. Riseman! The man's name was
Riseman, not Roberts! What a liar!
Ana escuchó. ¡Levántate! ¡El hombre se llamaba
Riseman, no Roberts! ¡Qué mentiroso!
The man did not look at Anna. 'I'm pleased to meet you,
Mr Slatin,' the man said.
El hombre no miró a Anna. —Es un placer conocerlo,
señor Slatin —dijo el hombre—.
'Please come with me,' said Dave.
"Por favor, ven conmigo", dijo Dave.
Mr Riseman followed Dave. They went into the Special
Orders room.
Riseman siguió a Dave. Entraron en la sala de Órdenes
Especiales.
A minute later, Dave came out. He came to the front of
the shop.
Un minuto después, salió Dave. Llegó al frente de la
tienda.
'It's lunchtime, Anna he said. 'You can go home now.
'Es la hora del almuerzo, Anna', dijo. Ya puedes irte a
casa.
'Thanks, Dave,' said Anna. 'I'm going in a few moments.'
-Gracias, Dave -dijo Anna-. Me voy en unos momentos.
Dave went back to the Special Orders room. Anna did
not leave the shop. She waited.
Dave volvió a la sala de pedidos especiales. Anna no
salió de la tienda. Ella esperó.
Anna wrote down the letters A.R.I.C.S. She understood
'A.R.' 'Arthur Riseman'. But she did not understand
'I.C.S.
Anna escribió las letras A.R.I.C.S. Ella entendió 'A.R.'
'Arthur Riseman'. Pero ella no entendió 'I.C.S.
At half past one Anna heard noises. Mr Riseman was
leaving. Dave was talking.
A la una y media Anna escuchó ruidos. El señor
Riseman se iba. David estaba hablando.
'Thank you, Mr Riseman. ' said Dave.
Gracias, señor Riseman. dijo Dave.
'And thank you,' said Mr Riseman. 'You have helped me
a lot. '
—Y gracias —dijo el señor Riseman. Me has ayudado
mucho. '
'Good,' said Dave. 'Goodbye, Mr Riseman. My assistant
isn't in the shop, but you can open the door. Goodbye.'
-Bien -dijo Dave-. Adiós, señor Riseman. Mi asistente
no está en la tienda, pero puedes abrir la puerta. Adiós.'
Dave went upstairs and Mr Riseman came into the front
of the shop. Anna was sitting quietly in a corner.
Dave subió las escaleras y el señor Riseman entró en
la parte delantera de la tienda. Anna estaba sentada en
silencio en un rincón.
'Oh! ' said Mr Riseman. 'I thought you had gone home.'
'¡Vaya! —dijo el señor Riseman—. Pensé que te habías
ido a casa.
'No,' she said. 'I decided to have lunch in the shop
today.'
'No', dijo ella. 'Decidí almorzar en la tienda hoy.'
Anna and Mr Riseman looked at each other. They did
not like each other. There was silence. Anna spoke first.
Anna y el señor Riseman se miraron. No se querían.
Había silencio. Ana habló primero.
'Would you like to buy some bread, Mr Roberts? ' she
said.
¿Le gustaría comprar algo de pan, señor Roberts? ' ella
dijo.
'Riseman, my name is Riseman,' said the man.
'Riseman, mi nombre es Riseman', dijo el hombre.
Anna smiled. 'I'm so sorry,' she said. 'Would you like to
buy some home-made bread, Mr Riseman?
Ana sonrió. "Lo siento mucho", dijo. ¿Le gustaría
comprar pan casero, señor Riseman?
'It looks delicious,' said Mr Riseman. He was very polite
again. 'Yes, I'll take some, please. My wife will love it. '
"Se ve delicioso", dijo el Sr. Riseman. Volvió a ser muy
educado. 'Sí, tomaré un poco, por favor. A mi esposa le
encantará. '
'Here you are,' said Anna. She put the bread in a bag.
"Aquí tienes", dijo Anna. Puso el pan en una bolsa.
Then she said, 'You can put it in your briefcase.
Luego me dijo: 'Puedes ponerlo en tu maletín.
'My briefcase? ' said Mr Riseman. 'I haven't got a
briefcase. '
'¿Mi maletín? —dijo el señor Riseman—. No tengo
maletín. '
'I think you've forgotten it,' she said. 'I'll go and get it for
you. '
—Creo que lo has olvidado —dijo ella. Iré a buscarlo
para ti. '
Anna moved towards the back of the shop. Mr Riseman
stepped in front of her. He held her wrists. He was very
strong.
Anna se movió hacia la parte trasera de la tienda. El
señor Riseman se puso delante de ella. Él sostuvo sus
muñecas. Él era muy fuerte.
'Listen to me,' he said. 'I don't want that briefcase. Leave
it there. '
'Escúchame', dijo. No quiero ese maletín. Déjalo ahí. '
'All right,' said Anna. 'Please, let me go. You're hurting
me! '
-Está bien -dijo Anna-. 'Por favor déjame ir. ¡Estas
hiriendome! '
Mr Riseman let go of Anna and turned towards the door.
Riseman soltó a Anna y se volvió hacia la puerta.
He left the shop hurriedly. He had not taken his bread
with him.
Salió de la tienda a toda prisa. No se había llevado su
pan consigo.
Anna watched Mr Riseman leave. Her hands were still
hurting five minutes later.
Anna vio marcharse al señor Riseman. Sus manos
todavía le dolían cinco minutos más tarde.
