Chapter 13

The Special Orders Room

La sala de pedidos especiales

Anna got home about ten o'clock. She turned on the
radio and listened to the news. The Chairman of I.C.S.
was dead and Mr Riseman was the new Chairman.
Anna llegó a casa alrededor de las diez. Encendió la
radio y escuchó las noticias. El presidente de I.C.S. estaba
muerto y el Sr. Riseman era el nuevo presidente.

Anna did not sleep that night. She was thinking about
Dave Slatin and the Special Orders. What were they?
What was Dave Slatin doing in that room?
Anna no durmió esa noche. Estaba pensando en Dave
Slatin y las Órdenes Especiales. ¿Que eran? ¿Qué estaba
haciendo Dave Slatin en esa habitación?

On Saturday morning she went to the shop. Dave said

nothing to her. He was angry because Anna had not
worked on Friday. He did not ask about her day off, and
Anna did not tell him about it.

El sábado por la mañana fue a la tienda. Dave no le dijo

nada. Estaba enojado porque Anna no había trabajado
el viernes. No le preguntó sobre su día libre y Anna no
se lo contó.
At eleven o'clock, Dave left the shop. He got in his car
and drove off.
A las once, Dave salió de la tienda. Se montó en su coche
y se fue.
Anna was alone. This was her chance! She went to the
back of the shop and turned the handle of the locked
door.

Ana estaba sola. ¡Esta era su oportunidad! Fue a la parte

trasera de la tienda y giró la manija de la puerta cerrada.
But the Special Orders room was not locked! Dave had
forgotten to lock it. Anna opened the door and went
into the room.
¡Pero la sala de pedidos especiales no estaba cerrada!
Dave se había olvidado de cerrarla. Anna abrió la puerta
y entró en la habitación.
It was a small room, dark and hot. Anna turned on the
light, but it was not a very strong light.
Era una habitación pequeña, oscura y calurosa. Anna
encendió la luz, pero no era una luz muy fuerte.
She looked round the room. There was a small table, two
old chairs and a lot of boxes. That was all. Special
Orders? There were no order books, no papers, no
pencils.
Ella miró alrededor de la habitación. Había una mesa
pequeña, dos sillas viejas y muchas cajas. Eso fue todo.
¿Órdenes especiales? No había libros de pedidos, ni
papeles, ni lápices.
Anna walked round the table. It was difficult because
there were a lot of boxes on the floor. Anna opened one
of the boxes and looked inside. She found some old
magazines and newspapers. Underneath, there were
some dirty, old clothes.
Anna rodeó la mesa. Fue difícil porque había muchas
cajas en el suelo. Anna abrió una de las cajas y miró
dentro. Encontró algunas revistas y periódicos viejos.
Debajo, había ropa sucia y vieja.
But underneath the clothes she discovered some money.

Pero debajo de la ropa descubrió algo de dinero.

Lots of money. British money. French money
American. German. There was money from all over the
world. Anna was amazed. She had never seen so much
money before.
Mucho dinero. dinero británico. dinero francés
americano. Alemán. Había dinero de todo el mundo. Ana
estaba asombrada. Nunca antes había visto tanto
dinero.
She looked round again and found Mike Bailey's case.

Volvió a mirar a su alrededor y encontró el maletín de

Mike Bailey.

It was empty. Then she found Arthur Riseman's

briefcase.

Estaba vacío. Luego encontró el maletín de Arthur

Riseman.

That was empty too.

Eso también estaba vacío.

Then Anna looked into a bigger box. Inside it were some
dolls with broken arms and legs. One of the dolls was
very beautiful, but it had a broken arm. Anna put it on
the table.
Entonces Anna miró dentro de una caja más grande. En
su interior había unos muñecos con brazos y piernas
rotas. Una de las muñecas era muy hermosa, pero tenía
un brazo roto. Anna lo puso sobre la mesa.
Then Anna found a book about football. Inside there
were some pictures of footballers but the pictures were
all torn. Anna put the book on the table.
Entonces Anna encontró un libro sobre fútbol. Dentro
había algunas fotos de futbolistas pero las fotos estaban
todas rotas. Anna puso el libro sobre la mesa.

Anna looked into the box again and found some little
cars. Most of them were broken. She found a small
model aeroplane. It was broken too.
Anna volvió a mirar dentro de la caja y encontró algunos
autos pequeños. La mayoría de ellos estaban rotos.
Encontró un pequeño modelo de avión. También estaba
roto.

Anna put all these things on the table. What a strange

collection! There was the money, the broken doll, the
toy cars, the model aeroplane. And there was the
football book with the torn pictures. Anna looked at the
things on the table. What were they for? Why did Dave
Slatin keep them in this locked room?
Anna puso todas estas cosas sobre la mesa. ¡Qué extraña
colección! Estaba el dinero, la muñeca rota, los coches
de juguete, la maqueta de avión. Y allí estaba el libro de
fútbol con las imágenes rotas. Anna miró las cosas sobre
la mesa. ¿Para qué eran? ¿Por qué Dave Slatin los
mantuvo en esta habitación cerrada con llave?

Suddenly Anna jumped. There was a noise behind

her. Someone was standing at the door.
De repente, Anna saltó. Hubo un ruido detrás de ella.
Alguien estaba parado en la puerta.
