(adverb) read (verb) the letter (objeto directo) con atención
(direct object) (adverbio)
Max (subject) is (verb) Max (sujeto) trabaja (verbo)
now (adverb) a scientist ahora (adverbio) como científico
(complement) at an (complemento) en un laboratorio
international lab (adverb) internacional (adverbio)
The firm (subject) moved La empresa (sujeto) se trasladó
(verb) to Madrid (complement) (verbo) a Madrid (complemento)
ten years ago (adverb) hace diez años (adverbio)
She (subject) worked (verb) Ella (sujeto) trabajó (verbo)
hard (adverb) the whole week duro (adverbio) toda la semana
(adverb) (adverbio)

Correcto Incorrecto
Do you do these things? You do these things? ¿Haces estas cosas?
Are you recruiting any Do you are recruiting ¿Estás contratando
staff at the moment? any staff at the moment? personal en este
momento?
predicativa.
The new company is launching the best product: La nueva empresa está lanzando el
mejor producto.
Is there anything new for me at the post?: ¿Hay alguna novedad para mí en el correo?
(parecido), alive (vivo), alone (solo), asleep (dormido) y awake (despierto).
Alison was asleep when I rang: Alison estaba dormida cuando llamé.
8
The meeting will take place every week: La reunión tendrá lugar cada semana.
Alison had never paid such a bill: Alison nunca había pagado tal factura.
The meeting was mainly about sales: La reunión fue principalmente sobre ventas.
cita.
9
suficientemente clara y adecuada.
[aɪʃʊbispraɪzdɪfdʒɒnəmeəriwəleft].
English, inglés de Gran Bretaña) y AmE.
(American English, inglés de los EE. UU. [Estados Unidos]).
Secretary [ˈsekrətri] [ˈsekrəteri]
11
Así, por ejemplo, con el prefijo non- se forma la palabra nonsmoker (no fumador);
like you to meet (Me gustaría que conociera a…) y May I introduce...? (¿Puedo
presentarle a…?).
You: Good morning Ms Tú: Buenos días Sra. Barrett.
Barrett. How are you today? ¿Cómo se encuentra hoy?
Ms Barrett: I am well, Sra. Barrett: Estoy bien,
thank you. And you? gracias. ¿Y tú?
13
a profesores universitarios.
14
through.
15
Mr Parker: Good afternoon. This Sr. Parker: Buenas tardes. Soy el
is Mr Parker. Could I speak to Sr. Parker. ¿Podría hablar con la
Mrs Álvarez, please? Sra. Álvarez, por favor?
Secretary: Good afternoon Mr Secretario: Buenas tardes Sr.
Parker. Hold the line, please. I’ll Parker. Manténgase a la espera,
put you through. por favor. Le pasaré con ella.
Mr Parker: Thank you very much. Sr. Parker: Muchas gracias.
Secretary: You’re welcome. Secretario: De nada.
jornada laboral.
Could you wait a second, please? ¿Podría esperar un segundo, por favor?
I am going to check it. Voy a comprobarlo.
Excuse me a second, please. Discúlpeme un segundo, por favor.

Commercial and administrative documents are essential for any company, without these
documents we could not make business.
These types of documents should be written in a formal language, following in a
determinate structure and rules, but we also have to try to adapt our language and our
way to fill our documents to our costumers, avoiding vocabulary, structures or styles
that could be offensive to them. These documents in many occasions transmit the image
of our company.
Some tips are:
- Use short sentences, easy to understand.
- The main information should be before additional details.
- Be polite
- Pay attention to the paper and envelopes you use, the type of letter, the size etc.
- avoid impersonal language, use a friendly language without being informal. Courtesy
is essential for professional relationships.

The media used for written presentations nowadays are the computer programs as
“Microsoft Power Point” or “Open Office”. They allow to communicate information in
a visual and attractive way, which can include images, texts, graphics…
Rules:
- Structure your presentation: as in oral presentation written ones should consist on an
introduction, body and closing.
- Simplicity, don’t use words difficult to understand or your reader will stop reading
- Slides should be attractive, use colours, images and do not write very much in each
one.
- Punctuation is very important. Very long sentences make the reader get lost.
- Don’t make your paragraphs too long, three or four sentences will be right.
