This article shows the complexity of the mental organization of a bilingual individual, as
well as his/her dual communicative competence that allows him/her to become
cognitively enriched in comparison to a monolingual individual. Likewise, the problems
traditionally attributed to the bilingual phenomenon are studied and are shown in
reality to be a consequence of the way in which society regards this phenomenon. The
article concludes by emphasizing fact that bilingualism is in itself an attribute that
provides advantages for the individual in his/her cognitive development in general. The
disadvantages are a consequence of an unequal relation between the languages that
are in contact within the community.
