 Introducción
El factor Rh es una proteína que está en el recubrimiento de los
glóbulos rojos. Si la proteína del factor Rh está sobre los glóbulos,
la persona es Rh positiva. Si no está presente el factor Rh, la
persona es Rh negativa y por medio de su determinación se detecta
el tipo de sangre, ya sea Rh + o -

Tener Rh– significa que se tiene la misma proteína pero con

modificaciones en ciertos aminoácidos que determinan diferencias
significativas en la superficie de los glóbulos rojos, y hacen a los
humanos Rh– disponer de anticuerpos (aglutininas) en el plasma que
reaccionan contra los glóbulos rojos Rh +.

Cuando un bebé tiene células sanguíneas Rh-positivas y la madre

tiene células saguíneas Rh-negativas, los dos presentan
incompatibilidad de Rh. Como resultado, el sistema inmunológico
de una madre Rh-negativa puede reconocer los glóbulos rojos del
feto Rh-positivo como "extraños" y producir anticuerpos contra el
factor Rh de los glóbulos rojos del feto. Este proceso se denomina
sensibilización Rh.
