COMENTARIO CRITICO
Born on June 8, 1724, in Austhorpe, Yorkshire, the British engineer John Smeaton is
known for his masonry lighthouse on the Eddystone Reef in Plymouth, Devon, and as
the initiator of the profession of civil engineering in Great Britain. Smeaton learned to
make mathematical instruments in London, where his scientific work led to his
election to the Royal Society in 1753. He visited the Netherlands during 1754,
studying canals, ports, and mills; the tour was the turning point in his career. In
1756–59 he built the third Eddystone lighthouse, using assembled Portland cement
blocks to resist the pounding of waves; this technique became standard for such
wave-swept structures. While planning the lighthouse, he discovered that the best
mortar for underwater construction was limestone with a high proportion of clay,
and therefore he was the first to recognize what constitutes hydraulic lime. Smeaton
also built the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland, which opened a waterway between
the Atlantic and the North Sea; he built bridges in Perth, Banff and Coldstream
(Scotland); and completed the port at Ramsgate in Kent.
• CRITICAL COMMENT
1. Jhon smeaton, is one of the most important figures in civil engineering, due to his
great contributions with limestone, hydraulic lime, construction of waterways among
others.
2. Smeaton is remembered for being not only a brilliant and dedicated engineer, but
also revolutionizing designs. He changed the way of engineering in his time. It is for
this reason that despite having passed so much time, his legacy is still valid.
3. Smeaton took the lead in the transition from wind to steam. He introduced cast
iron shafts and gears into windmills and watermills, receiving the Copley Medal from
the Royal Society for his work.
