RESUMEN:
SUMMARY (ABSTRACT)
The aim of this experiment is to become familiar with different chemical tests that allow
the identification of aldehydes and ketones. These tests are based on the specific
reactive properties of the functional groups present in these classes of compounds. By
carrying out these tests, we will be able to reliably characterize the presence of
aldehydes and ketones in an unknown sample. In this lab report, several classic tests
to identify the presence of aldehydes and ketones in provided samples will be
described and carried out. These tests include the Tollens test, the Fehling test, the
Benedict test, and the potassium dichromate test. Each test is based on a specific
chemical reaction that takes advantage of the unique characteristics of aldehydes and
ketones.
The correct identification of aldehydes and ketones is essential in many fields, such as
forensic chemistry, medical research and the food industry. Furthermore, these tests
provide a solid foundation for understanding the chemical reactions and
transformations of these compounds in various contexts. To give a quicker context, this
report will detail the experimental procedures and the results obtained while conducting
aldehyde and ketone identification tests. The results will allow us to determine the
nature of the samples provided and understand the underlying reactions that support
these identification tests.
