7. Overview
There are many different situations in which a tower replacement might be warranted, ranging from
intermittent instability to complete system failure. Covering each possible scenario is beyond the
scope of this replacement procedure. However, this document is intended to provide enough
information to guide most replacement situations.

Beginning with the original tower, you will record as much configuration information as possible and
create backup files to help configure the new computer. In some cases, you may not be able to
capture some or all of this information. You may need to resort to old backup files or to manual
configuration during installation of the new tower.

8. Instructions for tower replacement

8.1. Preparing for the replacement
The instructions in this section guide you through gathering current configuration data from
an existing computer that is at least partially functional. If your system cannot boot to
Windows, skip this section.

1. Power up the computer. When you see the windows loading screen, press and hold the
left <SHIFT> key to interrupt the auto-login process. Release the <SHIFT> key when the
user login prompt is displayed.
2. Log in to the system as user serviceapp (password: orion). The Service Application will
attempt to start automatically. If it starts, close it. If it fails, click OK in any error
message presented.
3. After the Service Application is closed or fails to start, the Clinical Application may
attempt to start automatically. If it fails, click OK in any error message presented.

The system should remain idle at the Windows desktop. Proceed with the remaining
instructions in this section.

DOC1847351 REVISION 1 PlatinumOne, PrecisionRXi, PrecisionMPi COMPUTER TOWER REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

8.1.1. Record the software version of the existing system

In this section, you will record the version number of the existing system for
reference later in this procedure. This is primarily done to verify backup compatibility
prior to restoring the configuration from backup files. The section requires that the
Clinical Application started successfully. If the Clinical Application cannot be started,
you may skip this section.

1. At the top of the Clinical Application menu, click Status.

2. In the Status window, select the Software Versions tab.
3. Record the software version listed in the first line of information, immediately
beneath the tabs.

4. After recording the software version, close the Status window.

5. Exit Clinical Application. The system should remain idle at the Windows
desktop.

8.1.2. Record the local network information of the existing system

In this section, you will record the network configuration information for each
network connection in the system. Most legacy systems contain only one network
connection. Of those newer systems that contain two NICs, only one of them will be
used, but to ensure that the new computer is configured correctly for the site, ensure
that you record the configuration of both connections.

1. On the Windows desktop, right-click on My Network Places and select

Properties in the context menu. The Network Connections control panel opens,
containing one Local Area Connection icon for each network connection
detected in the system.
2. For each Local Area Connection icon, perform the following steps:
a) Right click on the connection icon and select Properties in the context
menu. A new connection properties window opens.

Instructions for tower replacement Page 10

e) In the connection properties window, click Cancel to close the window.
3. After you have recorded the TCP/IP settings for each Local Area Connection
icon in the control panel, close the window.

8.1.3. Create backup files from Service Application

In this section, you will use the standard backup feature of the Service Application to
create a set of configuration backup xml files. These files contain most of the
information found in the Config window, including site information, default doctor
preferences, generator interface, and other parameters. Save these files to the USB
drive. If you cannot start Service Application, skip this section.

1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Service Application icon.

2. Click Config in the Service Application menu.

confirm, click Yes.

4. Repeat the following steps for each of the three Save windows (sysconfig,
userconfig, and LUTs):
a) Navigate to the desired directory on the USB drive to save the new
backup file.
b) If desired, change the default file name in the File Name field.
Remember that you will need to be able to identify the file type, so the
file name should clearly identify sysconfig, userconfig, or LUTs, as
appropriate, but may also include site name or date of backup.

c) Click Save.
5. After completing the backup of all three files, close the configuration window.
6. Exit Service Application.

8.1.5. (Optional) Copy patient database and image files

If necessary, you can perform this section to transfer the patient list and associated
images from the older computer to the new computer. If the site does not require
migration of the patient database, you may skip this section.

NOTE: The image files associated with a typical patient database on PlatinumOne-based
systems can require significant storage space. Ensure that your USB drive has sufficient
available space before beginning this procedure. To check the amount of space required,
right-click on the Image_db folder in the root of C:\ on the imaging system, select
Properties, and note the “size on disk” reported by Windows. This is the amount of
available space that will be required on your USB drive. Flash drives often will not be
sufficient to transfer the patient database; an external USB hard drive of 120GB or more
is generally required.
1. In the system tray (small icons in the lower right corner of the screen, next to the
clock in the task bar), right-click on the SQLServer management icon and stop
the server.

2. Navigate to C:\MSSQL7\.
3. Copy the DATA folder and paste the copy into the directory containing your
backup files on the USB drive.
4. Navigate to the root of C:\.
5. Copy the Image_db folder and paste the copy into the directory containing your
backup files on the USB drive. The copy process may take up to several minutes,
depending on the size of the local patient database on the system. (See Note at
the beginning of this section. Significant storage space may be required during
this step.)
6. After the file copy is complete, close all browsing windows and power down the
system.

NOTE: It is not necessary to start SQL Server again before powering down the
system. It will start automatically on the next system startup.

8.2. Installing the replacement tower

In this section, you will disconnect all cables from the rear of the existing system and install the
new system, restoring connections to the correct places on the back of the new computer.

Because you may be replacing a computer of one platform with a new computer of another
platform, it is critical that you understand the function of each cable connected to the system
because the connection positions may vary from one platform to another. When connecting
the new computer, make sure you connect the cables to the correct positions, as indicated in
the following diagram. Do not rely on the position of the connection on the old system, as it
may not be the same function or in the same place on the new system.

into the C:\MSSQL7 directory.
5. Navigate to the root of C:\.
6. Copy the Image_db folder from your backup files on the USB drive and paste the
copy into the root directory of C:\. If prompted to overwrite TestPatterns, click NO.
The copy process may take up to several minutes, depending on the size of the
patient database that you are restoring.
7. In the system tray, right-click on the SQLServer management icon and start the
server. The service may take a few seconds to start, after which the icon will
contain a small triangle inside the white circle overlaid on the icon.

8.4. Calibrate the system

Due to slight difference between platforms and software versions, it is important to perform
calibration on the new system rather than restoring it from a backup. So that the system is in a
“clean” state for calibration, this process starts with a power cycle. The following instructions
guide you to the beginning of the calibration process. For complete details about calibration,
see the product Service Manual, available in electronic format on the Windows desktop.

1. Close all open applications and windows.

2. Shut down the system.
3. Power down the external GIM module. This can often be accomplished by simply
powering down the generator. Verify that the power has been removed from the
GIM by looking for any illuminated LED’s on the GIM board. If any LED remains on,
the board still has power.
4. Allow the system and GIM to remain powered off for at least 10 seconds.
5. Power up the GIM and computer. When you see the Windows loading screen,
press and hold the left <SHIFT> key to interrupt the auto-login process. Release
the key when you see the login prompt.
6. Log in to the system as user ‘serviceapp’ (password: orion). The Service
Application starts automatically.
7. In the Service Application menu, click Calib. The calibration window opens.

8. In the Calibration window, select System Auto. The first step of the auto-
calibration process is displayed in the window.

9. Proceed through auto-calibration, using the product Service Manual as

reference. Remember that the x-ray beam must be attenuated with 2mm of
copper (or equivalent) and specific doses are required, as indicated in the Service
Manual.

NOTE: When replacing a tower on a system that is equipped with a Heliflex

direct-couple lens (primarily Precision RXi and MPi installations), spot iris
calibration may fail due to insufficient adjustment range in the iris
control. When this occurs, perform the DDM Update instructions in
Appendix A to change the behavior of the retractable Neutral Density
Filter (NDF) in the lens, then return to this section and repeat the
calibration.

10. After you have complete auto-calibration, click Save on the left menu of the
window. If prompted to confirm save, click Yes.
11. Close the calibration window.
12. Exit the Service Application. The Clinical Application starts automatically.
13. Close the Clinical Application.
14. Power down the system.

8.5. Perform system sanity check

After you have complete configuration and calibration, you must check the functional integrity
of the system to ensure that both configuration and calibration have been applied
successfully. These tests are performed in a test patient session in Clinical Application. If you
have a phantom or other test device for evaluating
image quality, place it in the x-ray beam for these tests.

This section assumes a working knowledge of the features of Clinical Application. If necessary,
request assistance from site personnel or refer to the product User’s Manual for guidance in
creating patient records, acquiring images, and/or using DICOM features.

If DICOM services are used at the site, ask for a test patient order to be entered on the worklist
so that worklist import can be tested. Also verify with site personnel that a test patient can be

sent to the DICOM network storage device(s) without causing problems with their billing or
workflow.

1. Power up the system. DO NOT interrupt the auto-login process. Allow the system
to boot normally into the default ‘operator’ account. The Clinical Application will
start automatically.
2. Open the patient list window. If you restored a patient database from the old
system, the window may take a few seconds to open, depending on the size of
the database you restored. The default database will show only the Test Patterns
patient.
3. Open a test patient session in one of the following ways:
• If worklist is available and a test patient has been created, use the worklist
tab in the patient list window to query for and open the test patient.
• To create a test patient locally, click the new patient button, enter some
generic information into required fields (varies by site; identified by
asterisks), and open the patient session.
4. Acquire at least one of each image type supported by the system. Basic image
types, available on all system configurations, include live fluoro, fluoro loop,
single spot, and serial spot. Optional image types supported only in certain
configurations include Roadmapping, DSA, and Tomo. Make sure that you also
verify all fields of view.
5. If DICOM network storage services are used at the site, send at least one image
to each of the available DICOM storage devices to verify connectivity.
6. If the site uses media for image archive, send at least one image to a blank
media in the DICOM Media drive in the system.
7. If the site uses DICOM print services from the system, send at least one image to
each printer used at the site to verify connectivity.
8. Close the patient session and delete the test patient to verify delete privileges in
the database.
9. Open the TestPatterns patient file and select the sixth image. It should display a
SMPTE pattern.
10. Verify appropriate appearance of the SMPTE pattern. Most importantly, verify
that the 5% differences in both white and black are visible.
11. If the system is equipped with a reference monitor, send the SMPTE pattern to
the reference display and verify correct appearance of the gray levels.
12. If the system is equipped with a low-line scan converter display, verify that the
gray levels are correctly displayed on that monitor.
13. Close the TestPatterns patient session.
14. Close the Clinical Application.
15. Power down the system.

9. Appendix A – Changing ND filter behavior

This appendix applies primarily to certain versions of PrecisionRXi and PrecisionMPi systems, but also
to any PlatinumOne system similarly equipped with the Heliflex direct- couple lens on the camera.
Refer to the service manual for identification of the lens if necessary.

NOTE: This appendix does NOT apply to PrecisionRXi systems loaded with 2007.12.14.02 XP-Patch
6.1 software. DO NOT apply these instructions to such systems. To determine software load,
refer to the Software Versions tab in the Status window of the Clinical Application. If your
system is loaded with this software and you are encountering difficulty with spot iris
calibration, please contact your next level of support for guidance

The Heliflex direct-couple lens includes a Neutral Density (ND) filter that can move in and out of the
field based on camera mode. This behavior is configurable by way of the DDM firmware on the IAPDB
in the imaging system.

By default, replacement towers are configured to disable the ND filter movement such that it never
moves into the field. This can cause failure of the spot iris calibration when a new tower is installed on
a system where the ND filter movement is required. In such cases, it is necessary to update the DDM
firmware to enable ND filter movement and thus allow successful calibration of the spot iris.

Procedure:
1. In the Service Application, click Update.
2. In the Update window, click Uninstall DDM. Click OK in the confirmation that the
DDM was removed.
3. In the Update window, click IAPB DDM Module. A browsing window opens.
4. In the browsing window, navigate to the appropriate flashburn directory as
indicated below for your system configuration.

Configuration Path
PlatinumOne RF/DSA C:\Program Files\InfiMed\Flashburn
PrecisionRXi RF/DSA C:\Program Files\GE\Flashburn
PrecisionMPi RF/DSA C:\Program Files\GE\Flashburn

5. Select the DDMFlashableND.ddm file and click Open. The update may take up to
15 seconds to complete.
6. Close the Update window.
7. Exit the Service Application.
8. If the Clinical Application starts automatically, close the application.
9. Perform a normal system shut down through the Windows Start menu. Allow the
system to remain powered off for at least 10 seconds.
10. Power up the system and log in as user ‘serviceapp’.

The DDM firmware in your system is now configured for ND filter operation. Return to the calibration
section and perform calibration.
