→ 01 PRÓLOGO
_ FOREWORD
Al momento de redactar este documento, Chile y el mundo
buscan frenéticamente encontrar respuestas a inmensos
desafíos que afectan de manera crucial a la humanidad
y a toda forma de vida en el planeta. Tanto así, que los
modelos de crecimiento económico y social establecidos
parecen estar perdiendo legitimidad, cuestionándose
los equilibrios y acuerdos previamente alcanzados e
impulsándonos, a pasos acelerados, a hacernos cargo
de diseñar activamente nuestro futuro.
Afortunadamente, la irrupción de tecnologías computa-
cionales de alto desempeño, distribuidas y en la nube,
junto a la creciente capacidad de captura, procesamiento
y análisis de datos, nos permiten hoy estudiar virtual-
mente múltiples escenarios y prototipar sus posibles
soluciones, proveyéndonos así de mejores respuestas
(¡o quizás de más preguntas!). Así, la digitalización en sí
constituye la piedra angular para conceptualizar, diseñar,
implementar y operar cualquier sistema inteligente con
miras a garantizar su propia sostenibilidad.
Todo lo anterior hace extremadamente complejo, y
al mismo tiempo fascinante, el ejercicio de imaginar

estrategias que conlleven a nuevos y mejores modelos
de convivencia social. Para esto necesitaremos generar
oportunidades respetando nuestro entorno enmarcados
en un contexto global; en un mundo que es, al mismo
tiempo, diverso, incierto y dinámico. Un mejor aprove-
chamiento de nuestros recursos humanos y naturales,
sin comprometer aquellos que futuras generaciones
necesitarán, requiere de un pensamiento interdisciplinario,
sistémico y vanguardista.

Desde esa perspectiva, y con una mirada hacia el 2030,
nuestra Facultad asume con optimismo y responsabili-
dad el desafío de contribuir activamente al desarrollo
sostenible. Inspirados por este propósito y entendiendo
que instaurar una cultura digital que incorpore Data
Science en todo nuestro quehacer es fundamental para
generar la sostenibilidad deseada, hemos sintetizado
nuestro plan estratégico para los próximos cinco años
en la fórmula Smart+Sustainable.
En las páginas que siguen presentamos cómo esta fórmula
guiará la dirección que daremos a nuestra formación de
pregrado y postgrado; cómo influirá en el impacto y alcance
de la investigación; cómo permeará en la transferencia
de conocimiento e innovación y finalmente, cómo nos
permitirá catalizar cambios en nuestros ecosistemas.
Así, invitamos a toda nuestra comunidad a llevar adelante
este Plan Estratégico, resultado de un ejercicio colaborativo,
para que en conjunto alcancemos las ambiciosas metas
que nos hemos propuesto. Todos los aportes, miradas
y talentos, desde el más pequeño al más grande, nos
permitirán construir un mundo sostenible.

_ At the time of writing this document, Chile and the World
frantically seek to find answers to immense challenges
that crucially affect humanity and all life on the planet.
So much so, that the established economic and social
growth models seem to be losing legitimacy, questioning
the equilibriums and agreements previously reached and
driving us, at accelerated steps, to take charge of actively
designing our future.
Fortunately, the emergence of high-performance, distributed
and cloud computing technologies, along with increasing
capacity for data collection, processing and analysis,
today allow us to virtually study multiple scenarios
and prototype their possible solutions, thus providing
us with better responses (or maybe more questions!).
Digitalization itself is therefore the cornerstone for the
conceptualization, design, implementation and operation
of any smart system with a view to guaranteeing its
own sustainability.
All of the above makes the exercise of imagining strategies
that lead to new and better models of social coexistence
extremely complex and fascinating at the same time. To
do this, we will need to generate opportunities that respect
our environment and are framed in a global context; in
a world that is also diverse, uncertain and dynamic. A
better use of our human and natural resources, without
compromising those that future generations will need,
requires interdisciplinary, systemic and avant-garde thinking.

From this perspective, and with a view towards 2030, our
faculty assumes the challenge of actively contributing to
sustainable development with optimism and responsibility.
Inspired by this purpose, and understanding that establishing
a digital culture that incorporates Data Science into all of
our work is essential to achieving the desired sustainability,
we have synthesized our strategic plan for the next five
years in the Smart+Sustainable formula.
On the following pages we present how this formula will
set the direction we will give to our undergraduate and
graduate training; how it will influence the impact and
scope of our research; how it will permeate the transfer of
knowledge and innovation, and finally, how it will allow
us to catalyze changes in our ecosystems.
We therefore invite our entire community to implement
and carry out this Strategic Plan, the result of a collaborative
exercise, so that together we can reach the ambitious goals
that we have set for ourselves. All contributions, points
of view and talents, from the smallest to the largest, will
allow us to build a sustainable world.

_ Society today faces dizzying changes that force us to be alert
and foresighted. Reacting is not an option.
En este contexto las nuevas tecnologías tienen un rol
protagónico, la ingeniería y las ciencias tienen la oportuni-
dad de liderar las grandes transformaciones y soluciones
a desafíos que serán cada vez más complejos y críticos.
¿Cómo no inspirarse ante las infinitas oportunidades que
abren los avances científico-tecnológicos y la forma en
la que pueden integrarse a nuestra sociedad? ¿Cómo no
sentir curiosidad ante aquellas oportunidades que aún
ni hemos imaginado, pero que esperan ser abordadas?
Estos cambios generan incertidumbre respecto a sus
impactos: ¿los avances científicos y tecnológicos traerán
consigo el bienestar esperado? Lo cierto es que el futuro
es un blanco móvil y está determinado por cómo lo imagi-

libertad para elegir la dirección que queremos tomar.
Abordar los desafíos de nuestra sociedad, plasmados
en el conjunto de Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible
de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, es la tarea
que ha definido la hoja de ruta de nuestra Facultad en
los próximos años. Solo así podremos contribuir con
nuestro quehacer al bienestar de nuestro planeta e im-
pactar positivamente a las futuras generaciones. Desde
la academia podemos contribuir a esta tarea a través de
la excelencia en la formación de ingenieras e ingenieros
que puedan contar con las herramientas y habilidades
necesarias para adaptarse de manera creativa y oportuna
Engineering and Science have the opportunity to lead
the major transformations and solutions to challenges
that are becoming increasingly complex and critical. How
can we not be inspired by the endless opportunities that
scientific and technological advances open up and by
the ways these can be integrated into our society? How
can we not be curious about those possibilities not even
imagined, but waiting to be addressed?
These changes create uncertainty regarding their impact:
Will scientific and technological advances bring about
the expected well-being? The truth is that the future is
a moving target and is determined by how we imagine
it and by the actions we undertake to move forward in
a particular direction. How can we shift towards green
mining? How do we deal with the efficient management of
our water resources to face the water crisis and the global
drought situation? What is required to ensure that food
production is carried out in a sustainable way? How far
is it possible to advance in the creation of new materials
is here; engineering and science give us the freedom to
choose the direction we want to take.
Addressing the challenges of our society, embodied in
the set of Sustainable Development Goals of the United
Nations, is the task that has defined the roadmap of
our faculty in the coming years. Only in this way can we
contribute to the well-being of our planet and positively
impact future generations with our work. In academia, we
can contribute to these goals through excellence in the
training of engineers who can count on the tools and skills
required to adapt to these fast changes in a creative and
timely way. We are committed to driving the generation
of new knowledge that enables us to move decisively into
the future we have envisioned. We require the diversity of
the ideas, skills and experiences of our entire community
to add social and economic value to our country, and to
contribute to building a sustainable world through the
development of innovative solutions.

Nuestra Facultad busca potenciar los talentos de cada
miembro de nuestra comunidad - como estudiantes,
académicos, colaboradores, exalumnos y empresas -
sabiendo que aquello que buscamos solo se consigue
a través de la sinergia entre actores diversos. A través
de una sólida formación en disciplinas vinculadas a las
ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería, artes y matemáticas
(STEAM por sus siglas en inglés), una investigación
rigurosa y coherente con las necesidades cambiantes de
nuestro mundo, así como de la revolución digital, junto
una mentalidad innovadora y emprendedora buscamos
generar un círculo virtuoso que potencie el alcance
de nuestro impacto. Son estas interacciones las que
precisamente habilitan la fórmula Smart+Sustainable.
En los próximos años buscamos traspasar fronteras, de
manera insospechada, en áreas como la minería, energía,
manejo sostenible del agua y otros recursos naturales,
salud, manufactura y nuevos materiales, alimentación
y, por qué no, en exploración espacial.

Requerimos de ingenieros e ingenieras que miren hacia el futuro, sean protagonistas
de su proceso formativo pensando en cómo quieren contribuir a la sociedad. Queremos
formar profesionales de primer nivel, íntegros y conscientes de la heterogeneidad
del mundo que les rodea y con una formación sólida en la lógica Smart+Sustainable.
Aspiramos a que la comunidad estudiantil desarrolle un nuevo mindset que estimule
su creatividad, les permita anticiparse y adaptarse rápidamente a un entorno dinámico,
y posibilite su transformación en agentes de cambio que contribuyan activamente
a crear nuevas realidades.

to anticipate and quickly adapt to a dynamic environment, and that transforms them

In order to achieve the sustainable development goals, we need to increase and enhance
our human capital in relevant disciplines. Our workforce needs to undergo continuous

profesionales capaces de pensar críticamente y cuestionarse,
así como anticiparse y adaptarse rápidamente a cambios
tecnológicos y sociales, creando nuevas realidades y
vinculándose responsablemente con su entorno.
_ Building a sustainable world requires professionals who are able to
think critically and question themselves, as well as anticipate and adapt
quickly to technological and social changes, creating new realities and
responsibly connect with their surroundings.
NUEVOS PARADIGMAS
Junto al pensamiento crítico impulsado por una formación
en artes liberales, nuestros ingenieros e ingenieras requieren
desarrollar una visión del mundo desde nuevos paradigmas
vinculados a la revolución digital y la sostenibilidad. Esta
nueva forma de pensar les permitirá adaptarse a un entorno
cambiante que requiere de soluciones efectivas a problemas
cada vez más complejos.

Along with the critical thinking driven by our liberal arts
training, our engineers have to develop a world view from
new paradigms that are associated with the digital revolution
and sustainability. This new way of thinking will enable them
to adapt to a changing environment that requires effective
solutions to increasingly complex problems.

Regardless of their future specialization, the new engineers
must be competent in the use of Data Science tools while
understanding their limitations and advantages. At the
same time, our educational model must actively incorporate

Nuestra Facultad está comprometida con la incorporación
de nuevos contenidos y metodologías de enseñanza que
potencien el desarrollo de nuevas habilidades en la comunidad

Our faculty will support the student and academic
community in the needs associated with each stage of
the nonlinear process of innovation and entrepreneurship.
For example, we will implement a mentoring program, and

DIVERSE AND STEREOTYPE
FREE CULTURE
A diverse and stereotype-free community is a necessary
condition to make our faculty a true engine of change. The
individual perspectives and experiences that different people
contribute strengthen creativity within teams, and thus
encourage an innovative approach to problem solving. However,
the low participation of women in STEAM requires concrete
actions to make decisive progress in closing these gaps, as
women’s contribution to quality research, innovation and
entrepreneurship is essential to addressing the sustainable
development challenges worldwide.
→ MENTORING PROGRAM
We will design a mentoring program that is tailored to
the needs of our students in every step of their career. It
will include initiatives that strengthen their vocation as
engineers; arouse their interest in the different branches
of engineering, research and entrepreneurship; and we
will give them the necessary tools to function successfully
in a constantly changing world.
→ DIVERSE COMMUNITY
In order to increase the diversity in the faculty we have
to take concrete measures. For example, the Special
Admission Program for Women in Engineering seeks to
promote a greater entry of women to the civil engineering
career. On the other hand, the UAI Spirit Program seeks
to attract students with diverse skills and talents that
add value to the community.

Con miras a impulsar la misión que tenemos como Facultad
y lograr los objetivos que nos hemos propuesto para los
próximos años, hemos avanzado en la implementación
y/o participación en nuevas iniciativas y en dar un nuevo
impulso a otras ya existentes. A continuación, queremos
visibilizar algunas de ellas, que corresponden solo a
un subconjunto de las muchas iniciativas que le dan
el sello de excelencia y dinamismo a nuestra facultad.
_ With a view to promoting the mission we have as a faculty
and achieving the objectives we have set for the next years,

OBSERVATORY
Data Observatory es una colaboración público-privada, sin fines de lucro, que tiene como miembros
fundadores al Ministerio de Economía, al Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación,
Amazon Web Services y la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. Su misión es adquirir, procesar, almacenar y
disponibilizar conjuntos de datos de valor global para contribuir al desarrollo de la ciencia, tecnología,
innovación, conocimiento y desarrollo económico debido a su volumen, naturaleza y complejidad. El rol
privilegiado de Chile como centro mundial de la astronomía, genera un campo de entrenamiento ideal
dadas las características del big data que genera la observación de los cielos, tanto en volumen como
en calidad, velocidad y diversidad de los datos; pero estos mismos mecanismos debemos enfocarlos
en la tierra para contribuir con soluciones que apunten hacia problemas como el calentamiento
global y la escasez hídrica.
_ The Data Observatory is a public-private, non-profit collaboration founded by the Ministry of Economy,
the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Amazon Web Services and Universidad
Adolfo Ibáñez. Its mission is to acquire, process, store and make available data sets of global value in
order to contribute to the development of science, technology, innovation, knowledge and economic
development due to its volume, nature and complexity. The privileged role of Chile as a world center
of astronomy, creates an ideal training field in view of the characteristics of big data that enables
the observation of the sky, both in volume and in quality, speed and diversity of data; but these same
mechanisms must focus on Earth to contribute to solutions that address problems such as global
warming and water scarcity.

ESCUELA MINA
PLANTA CHANCÓN
_ MINA PLANTA CHANCÓN SCHOOL
La Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias dispone de un espacio natural y técnicamente adecuado para que
estudiantes que cursan carreras mineras puedan realizar sus prácticas de formación y cuenten con las
herramientas necesarias para desarrollarse profesionalmente. La Escuela Mina Planta está ubicada en
el distrito minero de Chancón, Región del Libertador Bernardo O´Higgins, y es un proyecto impulsado
por el gobierno regional que vincula a nuestra universidad con la comunidad y tiene como beneficiarios
a alumnos y alumnas de liceos técnicos de esta zona del país. El recinto cuenta con laboratorios y
salas de clases para conocer a fondo los procesos y las técnicas de la metalurgia extractiva. En 2019 se
inauguró el túnel minero, correspondiente a la segunda fase del proyecto Escuela Mina Planta. Hacia
el futuro queremos transformar este lugar en laboratorio para promover investigación aplicada que
permita testear soluciones innovadoras relevantes para la industria minera.
_ The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences offers a natural and technically adequate space for students
who study mining careers to carry out their training practices, and provides the necessary tools for their
professional development. The Mina Planta School is located in the mining district of Chancón, Libertador
Bernardo O’Higgins region, and is a project promoted by the regional government that connects our
university with the community and whose beneficiaries are students of technical schools of this area
of the country. The enclosure has laboratories and classrooms in which the processes and techniques
of extractive metallurgy are explained in detail. In 2019, the mining tunnel was inaugurated, which
corresponds to the second phase of the Mina Planta School project. In the next years, we will transform
this place into a laboratory to promote applied research that enables testing of innovative solutions
relevant to the mining industry.
START-UP
SCHOOL
La mentalidad emprendedora juega un papel muy importante a la hora de entrenar a los ingenieros
e ingenieras del futuro. Para dar forma a los próximos diez años necesitamos que más estudiantes
se vinculen con el mundo emprendedor, ya sea formando parte de empresas emprendedoras y/o
start-ups, o bien fundando sus propias start-ups que se conviertan en los nuevos Google que cambien
Latinoamérica para siempre. La Facultad, a través de iniciativas como Start-up School tiene por objetivo
estimular el desarrollo de esta mentalidad emprendedora de manera que al menos un tercio de

nuestros ingenieros e ingenieras se vinculen a nuevas start-ups tecnológicas. Este programa se orienta
a estudiantes que estén cursando los últimos años de su carrera y constituye un medio conducente a
la titulación de nuestros ingenieros e ingenieras a través de un emprendimiento de base tecnológica.
_The entrepreneurial mindset plays a very important role in training the future engineers. To shape
the next ten years, we need more students to connect with the entrepreneurial world, either as part
of entrepreneurial companies and/or start-ups, or by founding their own start-ups which will become
the new Googles to change Latin America forever. Our faculty aims to stimulate the development of
this entrepreneurial mindset through initiatives like the Start-up School, so that at least one third of
our engineers become associated with new technological start-ups. This full-time semester program
is aimed at students who are studying the last years of their career and is a medium conducive to the
qualification of our engineers through a technology-based venture.

_ GENDER EQUALITY COMMITTEE
El 2019 se crea en la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias el primer Comité de Equidad de Género en
la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. Conformado por representantes del cuerpo académico, estudiantil y
administrativo, tiene por objetivo fomentar el desarrollo de una comunidad estudiantil y académica
comprometida con la diversidad como valor social fundamental y motor de cambio de cara al futuro.
El compromiso del Comité es potenciar el talento femenino al máximo, pues su contribución a la
investigación de calidad, innovación y emprendimiento, es esencial para abordar los objetivos de
desarrollo sostenible a nivel mundial.

Formed by representatives of the academic, student and administrative body, it aims to encourage the

contribution to quality research, innovation and entrepreneurship is essential to achieving the sustainable
