Como puedes ver, uno de los cambios más importantes afecta a la pregunta
obligatoria. Antes te pedían un "email", o "letter," con base en unas instrucciones.
Ahora, en lugar del "email "o "letter" te piden un "discursive essay."

Qué debe contener una buen ensayo FCE

 Es importante que el ensayo:

 Conteste a la pregunta que se formula en las instrucciones.

 Tenga una estructura clara y bien organizada, en la cual aparezca tus ideas
y opinión y una explicación de porqué tienes esa determinada opinión.
 Es recomendable que pongas en el antepenúltimo párrafo tus argumentos
de manera que enlacen con la conclusión que pondrás en último lugar. 
 El lenguaje es formal, así que aunque las contracciones están permitidas no
abuses de ellas Y, sobre todo, ten cuidado con los registros informales;
aquí tienes listas con ejemplos para saber qué se considera formal e
informal.

Cómo redactar un ensayo- How to write an essay

La pregunta ejemplo que utilizaremos será la que aparece como obligatoria del
Part 1 en el ejemplo del nuevo examen FCE 2015. Aquí tienes el examen
ejemplo para que te lo descargues desde la página oficial de Cambridge.
Esta es la pregunta del Writing.

1. Lee bien las instrucciones

Para redactar una buen ensayo, lo primero que debes hacer es leer bien las
instrucciones. Te recomiendo leas el "statement"  dos, o tres veces, por lo menos
para entender bien lo que dice:

-Every country in the world has problems with pollution and damage to the
environment. Do you think these problems can be solved?

Observa que están diciendo "que todos los países tienen problemas con la
contaminación y el daño al medio ambiente". Luego, te preguntan claramente tu
opinión personal: ¿Piensas que se pueden resolver estos problemas? Luego te
piden 1. que escribas sobre el tema en relación con el transporte 2. ríos y mares y
finalmente 3. des tus propias ideas.

2.  Haz "brainstorming" y piensa en el vocabulario

Como se trata de una opinión personal, el "brainstorming" de ideas cobra especial
importancia.
Con "brainstorming" quiero decir que pienses en todas aquellas cosas que se te
ocurren en relación al tema de la pregunta.

A medida que se te vayan ocurriendo ideas, tendrás que ir pensando en el

vocabulario que luego utilizarás.

Por ejemplo:

 Actividad humana-Pollution is a consequence of human activity, and human

progress
 Tecnologías-Technologies play a key role in solving the problem of pollution.
 Educación- Education is important to be able to deal with pollution.
 Children-Will bear (soportar) the consequences of a polluted world in the
future. They should also learn about pollution and how to prevent it.
 Necesidades Humanas- Human greed (avaricia humana) has no limits.
 Transport- Air contamination is a real threat (amenaza) to health-
Technology might help.
 Rivers and sea- Industry plays a key role in stopping water contamination
 Países en desarrollo- Developing countries pollute a lot
 Países desarrollados- Developed countries also pollute a lot,
example:United States
 Flora y fauna: Flora and Fauna (son las mismas palabras) also affected by
the pollution.
 Salud- Health is affected by pollution. This is a main issue (es un problema
clave).
 Sobrevivencia- Survival- At the end it is a question of survival, we pollute
because we probably choose the wrong ways to survive.

Nota: En el examen no podrás contar con un diccionario, pero siempre que

practiques puedes echar mano de algunos como Wordreference y Linguee. Al final,
tras la redacción de muchos "essays", lograrás incrementar tu vocabulario y los
temas nuevos que te presenten no te pillarán de sorpresa.

 3. Ordena tus ideas

La mejor manera de organizar tus ideas es a través de un esquema. Recuerda que
es muy importante en el ensayo conectar los argumentos en un orden
determinado.

Dejo ejemplos de frases que te serán útiles para este propósito.

- Many people/Some people argue... Mucha gente, alguna gente argumenta....
- It is often said.. Se dice frecuentemente que...
- However, in my opinion/ view ...No obstante, en mi opinión...
- I would say....yo diría
- From my point of view....Desde mi punto de vista
- Firstly, it is true (clear) that... En primer lugar, es verdad (está claro) que....
- While it is true that...Aunque es verdad que...
- On the one hand, and on the other hand (Cuidado: utilízalo siempre para
contrastar opiniones desde dos ángulos distintos (no iguales). For example: On the
one hand it is true that pollution has been increasing over the years but, on the
other hand, many people think that this a price we have to pay for progress.  Por
un lado, es verdad que la contaminación ha ido aumentando con los años, pero
por otro lado,  mucha gente piensa que este es el precio que debemos pagar por
el progreso.
- Finally, it is important to take into account that.... Finalmente es importante tener
en cuenta que...

Redacta un esquema (podrás escribirlo en el cuadernillo que te den), teniendo en

cuenta las instrucciones de arriba, y utilizando algunas de las frases útiles.

Aquí tienes un ejemplo de esquema para redactar cuatro párrafos:

1. Introduction: Reescribe la afirmación (statement) con tus propias palabras para

iniciar el ensayo. Por ejemplo:
Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide issues that are very difficult to solve.

2. Development 1: Expone tus argumentos sobre los puntos dados 1 y 2

For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that it mainly relies on very
polutting fossil fuel..Something similar happens with the rivers and the seas. .
3. Development 2: Expone tus propias ideas sobre el problema
I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts of pollutants released to the
environment...
4. Conclusion: Explica el porqué de tu opinión y cierra con una conclusión
Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do not get more involved, it is only
possible to solve these problems ....,

Nota:  Este esquema te servirá para guiarte y no olvidar cómo debes contestar a la
pregunta.

4. Redacta un borrador
Con estas ideas en mente redactamos el borrador. Lo mejor es que lo escribas en
inglés directamente, pero si te resulta difícil, prueba primero en español. (Podrás
escribirlo en el cuadernillo que te darán).

Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide issues that are very difficult to
solve. There are many reasons why.
For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that it mainly relies on very
polutting fossil fuel. The ideal solution would be to replace it by less polluting energies
such as electricity, 

Something similar happens with rivers and the seas. They are being contaminated by
industries that discharge chemicals and plastics.

I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts of pollutants released to the
environment, but not to completely eliminate them until there aren't new technologies
that allows us to replace them by less polluting products.

Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do not get more involved, it is only
possible to solve these problems in the long run by implementing new technologies that
can reduce pollution and their harmful effects.

5. Redacta tu ensayo
Más abajo tienes el ejemplo de ensayo del anterior borrador. Algo muy importante es
tener en cuenta que hay una limitación del número de palabras.
Por tanto, debes pensar que no puedes extenderte demasiado, ya que si lo haces
sobrepasarás el número de palabras y se te penalizará. Si te sobrepasas, que no sea
en más de 10 a 15 palabras como mucho. Tampoco debes escribir un ensayo
demasiado corto porque no quedarán bien expresadas tus ideas.
Una buena manera de hacerte una idea para que no te quedes corto, o te excedas, es
pensar que cada línea tendrá unas 10 palabras, por tanto, puedes escribir unas 19 o
20 líneas.

Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide issues that are very
difficult to solve. There are many reasons why. (1)

For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that it mainly relies on very
polutting fossil fuel.  (2) The ideal solution would be to replace it by less polluting
energies such as electricity, but this process takes time and in the meantime we
cannot ask countries to stop using fossil fuel because their economies would
collapse. (3)

Something similar happens with rivers and the seas. (4) They are being
contaminated by industries that discharge chemicals and plastics. But is it possible
to stop industries from producing chemicals and plastics?(5)

I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts of pollutants released
to the environment, but not to completely eliminate them until there aren't new
technologies that allows us to replace them by less polluting products. (6)

Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do not get more involved,

it is only possible to solve these problems in the long run by implementing new
technologies that can reduce pollution and their harmful effects. (7)

WRITING PART 2
Recuerda que en la segunda parte del "writing" del FCE, puedes escoger entre
varias categorías de redacciones.  Estas son las categorías:

 a report /un informe

 a review/ una crítica u opinión
 a story / una historia
 a letter/una carta
 an article/un artículo
 an essay/un ensayo

Es aconsejable dominar, al menos, dos categorías de escritos.

En el post de hoy, como he dicho más arriba, veremos los pasos a seguir para
redactar la mejor crítica  (review) que hayas escrito nunca en inglés.

En qué consiste este ejercicio (Writing: review)

Te darán unas instrucciones para que des tu opinión sobre, por ejemplo, un
libro, un hotel, un restaurante, una página web.

Número de palabras: 140 a 190 palabras. No importa si sobrepasas un poco este

número.

Tiempo: En total son 1 hora y 20 minutos para todo el writing. Como consiste en
dos partes, recomiendo 40 minutos para cada parte, aunque puede que la segunda
parte te cueste un poco más. En ese caso, piensa en dedicarle más tiempo a la
segunda parte que a la primera.

Puntuación: Todo el writing (Part 1 &2 equivale al 20% del examen).

Qué debe contener una buena crítica FCE

La crítica, u opinión, del FCE, es realmente una opinión personal con un
lenguaje semi-formal. Por tanto, se pueden usar contracciones, por ejemplo: It's,
don't, wasn't.

En este contexto, es importante que la crítica:

 Conteste a la pregunta que se formula en las instrucciones.

 Tenga una estructura clara y bien organizada: Sobre qué es tu opinión, los
detalles del tema y finalmente tu opinión.
 Capte la atención del lector.

Distribución de tiempos recomendada:

instrucciones.
Aquí tienes un ejemplo: 

You recently saw this announcement in a local English newspaper.

GIVE US YOUR OPINION ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE WEBSITE (1).

Soon we we'll be running a contest to choose the website of the year. Write us a review of
your favorite website. Describe the topic (2), the way it is presented (3), and say why you
think it is good (4). The bests reviews will be published in our newspaper.

Presta atención a lo que te piden:

(1) Debes escribir una opinión sobre tu página web favorita.

(2) Indicar el tema sobre el que versa tu página web favorita.
(3)  Describir cómo está presentada la información.
(4) Decir porqué piensas que es una buena página web.

Las instrucciones en los exámenes suelen ser similares a las que he presentado
arriba.

Si, por ejemplo, te piden que des tu opinión sobre tu película o libro favorito (o el
último que has leído ), te pedirán que des: 1) información sobre la historia 2) los
personajes 3) cualquier otra característica interesante y 4) finalmente, digas
porque recomendarías, o no, esa película, o libro.

2. Prepara un esquema
Redacta un esquema (podrás escribirlo en el cuadernillo que te den), teniendo en
cuenta las instrucciones de arriba, y que tu intención es convencer al lector de que
"tu (lo que sea) favorita" es la mejor.

Aquí tienes un ejemplo de esquema para redactar cuatro párrafos (lo

recomendado):

1. My favorite ( ) is
2. The topic: It has information on
3. Description of the information
4. Final opinion: I think it is one of the best () because......

Nota:  Este esquema, que no necesariamente usarás en tu redacción final, te

servirá para guiarte y no olvidar cómo debes contestar a la pregunta.

3. Prepara el vocabulario que utilizarás

Con el esquema conseguimos tener organizada la información y asegúrarnos
de que estamos contestando la pregunta. Pero, tenemos que pensar en la
forma de completarlo.

La mejor forma es visualizando tus ideas en relación con algo que conozcas de
verdad. Por ejemplo, en el caso de páginas web puede ser "Facebook", o "You
Tube", tu periódico favorito online, tu buscador favorito, o cualquier página que
hayas usado.

Lo mismo es válido para libros, películas, hoteles, restaurante, revistas y

hoteles.

Para contestar a la pregunta sobre páginas web favorita vamos a poner como
ejemplo "Facebook", porque mucha gente la conoce.

Seguramente, no será difícil para ti pensar en porqué te gusta Facebook (libro,

película, restaurante, revista) en español, así que lo primero que te vendrá a la
cabeza serán adjetivos y verbos en español, pero no en inglés. Por eso, a
continuación, te doy vocabulario

Puedes decir que es:

 Una red social : Social networking service

 Los usuarios deben registrarse: users must register
 Debes crear un perfil personal: you must create a personal profile.
 Añadir a otros usuarios como amigos: add other users as friends.
 Categorizar a tus amigos, como por ejemplo del trabajo:  categorize your
friends into lists such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends".
 Intercambiar mensajes: exchange messages
 Hacer comentarios en los mensajes de tus amigos, o decir que te gustan:
make comments on your friends's messages or say that you like them.
 Subir fotos y vídeos: upload photos and videos.
  Jugar juegos en línea: Play online games
 Unirte a grupos de interés: join common-interest user groups, organized by
workplace.

Nota: Para hacerte con vocabulario y frases útiles para críticas de libros, películas
y restaurantes mira el punto 6 más abajo.
 4. Redacta un borrador
Con estas ideas en mente redactamos el borrador. Lo mejor es que lo escribas en
inglés directamente, pero si te resulta difícil, prueba primero en español. (Podrás
escribirlo en el cuadernillo que te darán).

2) Topic: Facebook is a very popular social networking service. It has millions of users
all over the world.

3) Description: To access this website you must first register. You can create a profile,
add friends, upload photos or videos, play online games, write about what you're doing,
and many more things.

share things with friends and family.  And,  finally, it helps me to write the story of my
life.

5. Redacta tu crítica

Facebook is a very popular social networking service which has millions of users all

you can be in contact with friends that you would otherwise seldom see. If they are

The second reason is because you can share things with friends and family. I
personally love to share photos, opinions about places I have visited, or films I have
seen. More sharing means more engagement with people and groups of interest.
I've had some interesting online discussions.(5) And, the last reason is that it helps
you to write the story of your life.(6)
So if you haven't joined it yet, I would highly recommend you do so, especially if
you like to be in touch with your friends and like sharing things like I do. (7)
 No importa si excedes un poco el número máximo de palabras. En este caso he utilizado
justo 190  palabras.

Análisis de la crítica

(7) Opinión final de porqué la recomendaría.

5. Revisa tu crítica
Este paso es MUY importante.

Aquí tienes ejemplos de ejercicios para practicar.

1. A local radio is running a contest about book reviews. To participate in the

contest you must write a review about the last book that you read. Say the name of
the book, describe the most important characters, the plot, and say whether or not
you would recommend it. The best reviews will be read on the radio.

2. A website that reviews local restaurants is asking users to review a restaurant

you have eaten in your city.  Describe the restaurant, the service and say whether
you would recommend it or not.
