CAPÍTULO I

rhymes and songs in the Teaching of English in Primary Education”, en la Revista Docencia
caramelos, juguetes, dinero o calificaciones.
trabalenguas, canciones, rondas y rimas. (Carbajal, 2013)
2.2.4.1 Adivinanzas
14

escribe, lee, entiende y habla cualquier idioma.

5.3 Conclusions
1. The alternative hypothesis is proved because it was shown that the nursery rhymes
had influenced in the English pronunciation development in the third year of Basic
Education students of Alfredo Cisneros School, based on the results obtained in the
research.
2. It is concluded that at the beginning of this research process students had a very
limited level of English pronunciation, because they had just started the language
learning process. After, applying the nursery rhymes their pronunciation have
improved gradually. The use of nursery rhymes helps children to acquire good
pronunciation because they are practical activities where children have the
opportunity to exercise their speech muscles.
67
5.4 Recommendations
1. It is recommended that teachers use nursery rhymes in the classroom because they
help children to develop English pronunciation, due to the different types of nursery
rhymes allow developing activities rich in vocabulary, repetition of word sequences,
which kids to perceive and acquire the pronunciation features such as rhythm, accent,
intonation and fluency.
2. Teachers are suggested to include in their daily planning a nursery rhyme activity
because rhymes are an essential tool in the development of English pronunciation and
at the same time it strengthens speaking and listening skills so that they should be
used permanently in the classroom.
4. It must be taken into account that teaching English to young learners should have as a
fundamental principle to teach by the use of games and meaningful didactic materials
that increase the children’s interest to develop the communicative skills in each day of
class. Consequently, it is suggested to use the different nursery rhymes suck as tongue
twisters, chants, riddles and songs because they are playful and rhythmic, so they are
attractive for kids motivating them to learn English.
5. It is suggested to the teachers to use the didactic handbook about nursery rhymes;
because it contains a variety of dynamic and fun activities, easy to apply in the
classroom which will allow teacher to develop student´s pronunciation and other
English language skills.

CAPÍTULO VI
THE PROPOSAL
6.1. 1Introduction
English has become the most important language learned in most of the world during
recent years. For that reason, the Ecuadorian government through the Ministry of Education
has implemented English as a mandatory subject in the elementary levels since September
2016. That is why teachers must be aware to teach children the foreign language in the same
way as they learn their own mother language. Teachers have to consider that English is a
complicated language to learn for its pronunciation and grammar structure. Pronunciation is
an essential part of the speaking skill that allows effective communication flow. Even more
when the young learners from their third year of basic education at public school recently
started to learn English as a foreign language. Teachers have to look for strategies that help
kids learn English in a natural way so they will feel confident with themselves, and be
engaged to learn the language. For that reason, it is important to provide the teachers with a
guide which contains many activities to develop the pronunciation in order to support them to
do their work most easily and efficiently. The teacher’s guide is about nursery rhymes and
how to use them in the classroom. Nursery rhymes are the best way to learn the language and
develop the correct pronunciation. This is due to their repetitive nature that makes it easy for
children to learn the pronunciation features like word stress, intonation, rhythm and fluency.
All of the nursery rhymes contribute in different ways to develop children’s pronunciation.
The present guide is important due to it being a useful tool for teachers working with young
students who just started to learn the language.
This research was carried out at “Alfredo Cisneros Public School” in Calderon. It is a
town located in the north of the Quito city. The research referred to use the nursery rhymes to
develop pronunciation during eight weeks with the students from third year of basic
education who began to study English that school year.
This proposal has validity because it had had an experimental part. It was applied to the
young learns from the school. In addition, it had been validated by the school principal and
the English area coordinator.
69
This proposal could be applied in different public and private elementary schools
because it is important to start working on pronunciation development since the students are
young and using nursery rhymes are a great didactic resource to achieve a good pronunciation
in a natural, playful and fun way. Moreover, this proposal could help teachers using the
activities to motivate and engage the students with their learning. Methodological
6.1.3 Description
This proposal is based on two methodologies which are Total Physical Response
(TPR) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).
Total Physical Response is a teaching language method that was created by James
Asher during 60’s and 70’s. TPR suggests working with playful activities demanding
cooperative and interactive techniques. It works with commands and physical movements
which make students reaching understandable input in order to start to produce the
language.
Where students imitate what the teacher does, it facilitates the learners retain what
they learn for long time. TPR helps to develop reading, listening, speaking, vocabulary
and pronunciation. But mainly it helps students to feel confident and reduces stress and
anxiety (Fauziati, 2008).
70
doesn’t pay attention to the accuracy. It emphasizes the communicative proficiency
rather than mastery grammar structures (Fauziati, 2008).
The CLT characteristics are:
• Emphasis the language
• Do not pay attention the grammar
• Develop collaboration and interaction
• Use language authentic material
• Focus on meaningful activities
• Provide the learners the opportunity to share and explore their feelings, attitude and
opinions.
• Create a positive classroom atmosphere
• Tolerate errors
• Develop pronunciation and fluency
This Proposal is going to be an active handbook that guide the teachers who work in the
elementary basic education levels of teaching English.
This paper presents a theory foundation and offer suggestions about how nursery rhymes
might be used in the English Foreign Language classroom in order to help teachers use them
to develop the young students’ pronunciation. The handbook guides teachers to incorporate
relevant aspects like: objectives, interactive methodological approaches, as well as
meaningful activities to develop children’s pronunciation. First, the document defines what
nursery rhymes are, gives the characteristics, offer practical suggestions for how nursery
rhymes could be used in English as a Foreign Language teaching and finally gives some
examples for each type of nursery rhymes and how they may be applied in the classroom and
also there is a checklist for assessing the students’ pronunciation progress. Some activities
that the handbook has can be applied at the beginning as a warm up and others activities can
be used at the end of the lesson as an assessment.
6.1.5Time
The strategies proposed in this handbook can be used during the whole school year when
teacher considers it is appropiate and necessary that students practice activities to develop
71
pronunciation and they can be repeated as many times as teacher considers it timely to do.
The teacher can apply the activities for about ten minutes, it depends of the activity that
teacher chooses and number of students.
6.2. Justification
Although children have a natural innate ability and the attitude to learn any foreign
language sometimes, it could be a little difficult for young students to learn all linguistics
features from the new language, especially to learn to how to pronounce correctly. In
addition, it could be hard for they do it if they come upon with boring and monotonous
classes, as unluckily often happens. That’s why this proposal emphasizes the importance of
the use interesting and fun activities to teach English pronunciation to children. Applying
nursery rhymes in the classroom could make the students happy and enjoy the lesson because
they have a playful, creative language and repetitive characteristics which will help students
to memorize the words and their pronunciation easily, it will help students learning all
English pronunciation features like word stress, intonation, rhythm and fluency. Finally, the
handbook is going to be a wonderful help for elementary school teachers who want to
increase students’ motivation and engagement with their English classes.
6.3. Objectives
To develop pronunciation through the use of nursery rhymes to the students of the
elementary basic education levels.
To create active and playful activities to be developing in the class.
To increase motivation and engagement to students of elementary basic education in
order to get English language pronunciation in a fun and playful way.
Teaching children a foreign language is a really pleasure. Teachers must remember that
they can learn without really trying because they lap it up like a sponge. Conversely, teacher
must simplify the learning process and truly make it happen. To do those teachers need to
know how to engage the students with their learning.
72
6.4.1 Nursery rhymes
Nursery rhymes are one of the best tools for the English language classroom. Teaching
English as a foreign language to young children needs to be memorable and fun so that,
nursery rhymes could be one of the best learning methods which teachers may incorporate to
the lesson. They have a playful and repetitive nature. It is good because young children
always respond well to rhymed activities. Using nursery rhymes to teach English to young
learners is a powerful way to connect English language with song and rhyme (Prosic-
Santovac, 2015).
Nursery rhymes can help children develop their language skills especially in increasing
their vocabulary, developing their listening skills, and practicing pronunciation of sounds in
English, develop critical thinking (Priyantin, 2010).
Nursery rhymes can be used to different purposes such as: introduce a new topic, to
reinforce the vocabulary, to practice new grammar patters or to motivate the students to use
the language
6.4.1.3 Types
Nursery rhymes have been used to teach English to young learners for a long time and for
different purposes, they are divided in: chants, tongue twisters, riddles and songs.
6.4.1.3.1 Chants
According to Kenneth Beare “Chants are short, rhythmic simple melodies which are
speaking or singing, often characterized by one or two main pitches called reciting tones”
(Beare, 2017).
The use of chants to learn English are beneficial for learners of all ages who have a lower
level English (Tang, 2011). Chants are used to learn pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar
and develop memory which makes classes very funny. Chants are mainly effective when
students re learning new challenging forms.
For Richard Nordquist a “tongue twister is an informal term for a word group that's hard
to pronounce properly”. According, Edward Chang from the California University the tongue
73
twisters are difficult to pronounce because the brain articulates the tongue muscles
movements and a tongue twister has the same movements because the words are repetitive or
similar with the same letter it makes that the brain gets confused in the coordination of the
articulation and makes difficult its pronunciation.
They are a good technique to practice and develop pronunciation and fluency in the
learners. They can also support to improve intonations by using sound repetition. It can help
the students to be a much more confident with speaking. They work well as a warm up to
engage students with the new class (Barton, 2014).
Tongue twisters can be used small or large classes and at any time in the classroom, for
example at the beginning of the class as a warm-up, in the middle of the lesson to catch the
students’ attention again or at the end of the class to reinforce the lesson’s vocabulary
(Practice, 2017).
6. 4.1.3.3 Riddles
Teachers have been always looking up the best way to teach English to their students in
order they do not feel stress and bored so that using riddles in the class are a wonderful option
because they are playful activities that show up a natural way to learn language in an easily
and enjoyable form.
Moreover, teachers can use riddles any moment at the class for example at the beginning
of the class as a warm-up; in the middle of the class to get the students’ attention back and
relax the brain getting a little laughter and at the end of the class to review and reinforce the
vocabulary learned in the lesson as an assessment.
74
4.1.3.4 Childhood Songs
According to, Oxford Dictionary a song is a short poem or other of words to music or
meant to be sung. Using songs challenge the students because they are faster spoken. On the
contrary, they can also be motivational and enjoyable. Hans Mol, said that songs in are very
helpful to reduce students’ anxiety because they create an emotional and pleasant atmosphere
to the students of EFL classrooms. (Mol, 2009).
Songs are used to be repetitive and have a strong impact in the young students because
they are an authentic and natural language source. They are easily and quickly learned to
kids. They provide children the opportunity to listen to pronunciation in an extensive range of
varieties of the language which help students become aware with word stress and intonation,
and the rhythm. In addition, they help reinforced grammar structures and vocabulary of the
target language in a natural environment.
Moreover, using songs in the classroom is one of the best tools that help teachers to
maintain the students’ interest in the lesson. Songs work well as long as teachers make a
planning of them. (Gasset, 2017). This tool works in all ages and in all social environments.
They can help the children to learn English easily. It is a great motivating alternative for
teachers.
6.4.2 Pronunciation
Pronunciation is one of the most important aspect that people need to develop when they
are learning a foreign language. A good pronunciation makes a successful communication in
a foreign language. It is responsible for intelligibility (Tergujeff, 2013).
Pronunciation is the production or articulation of the consonants and vowels sounds that
people make in order to form the words and then produce sentences that allow flowing a good
communication.
Pronunciation is an essential skill for any English language learner because it is important to
focus on correct form and pronunciation for some reasons (Center, 2015):
1. To be understood
2. Interaction to learn English easily
3. Develop a good communication
75
4.3 Elements of pronunciation
4.3.1 Intonation
Intonation is a linguistic feature that denotes to the difference of the tone when people
pronounce a word or statement. it means that the speakers produce melodies with their voice
rising and falling which are distinguish by the listeners (Miller, 2017).
4.3.2Word stress
4.3.3 Rhythm
Rhythm is a natural effect that recurs alternations of contrasting elements of sound or speech.
that make the voice rises and falls which makes the language understandable (Kreidler,
2004).
4.3.4Fluency
Fluency is when people can use a language easily, reasonably quickly and without having to
stop and pause. It is that people can speak the language and it sounds natural as their mother
tongue.

INTRODUCCION
There is not a doubt that English has become in the most important language which
has been learned in most of the countries during the last years. Ecuador is not the
exception. For that reason, the Ecuadorian educational system has been changing in
order to improve and develop the level of English in the students. So that, the Ministry
of Education has implement English as a mandatory subject in the elementary levels
(Elemental y Media Basic General Education) since September 2016.
The elementary school students have been learning English recently, that’s why
teachers must encourage the kids to learn English through the use of strategies that help
kids to learn it in a natural way, so they will feel confident with themselves. Because
students acquired the foreign language the same way as they learn their mother
language.
That’s why this proposal was focused to develop the pronunciation and vocabulary
teaching English to young learners through the use of childhood rhymes which motived
the students and helped them to feel confident with themselves.
Thus, the kids with a good learning environment and motivated are able to develop
all language skills. Teachers have to take account that young learners learn through the
language games because they encourage the communication and interaction among
them.
The students are 7 years old. They study in a public school where they receive three
hours of English per week. There are thirty-five students in the class. One of the
advantages that they have is that they are working in a project with tablets. It is a very
good benefit because they can listen several nursery rhymes from de web. So that, it is
necessary that teacher develops very well these strategies with the purpose of helping
children to improve their pronunciation.
109
Justification
This Proposal is focused on teaching English as a foreign language through the use of
nursery rhymes in order to help students to develop their pronunciation. Considering the
importance that nursery rhymes represents in education, the objective is to use them as a
facilitating vehicle for learning the English language in an interdisciplinary and
integrating way. Nursery rhymes are potential tools of work for their ability to provide
the pronunciation development, to know the foreign culture, to promote social skills, to
foster creativity and affectivity.
Nursery rhymes like: tongue twisters, riddles, chants, songs, others are resources
which will help to develop the language skills during the first years of basic education.
As they carry out varied and rich activities that help to the language development.
To use songs, tongue twisters and chants, riddles in the EFL classroom can generate
an outstanding learning experience for the kids. In addition, they have a cultural value,
which helps the young learners with pronunciation and literary skills.
The repetitive nature of most nursery rhymes help students to practice pronunciation.
So they learn intonation, stress, and rhythm of the language.
Also it is important taking account that Childhood rhymes use repetition to involve the
right side of the brain which contains the musical intelligence. The development of
multiple intelligences can be very useful to help students speaking English
spontaneously similar they doing in their mother tongue, because they use repetition and
fun together so encourage the students to use the English language.
For that reason, this proposal is important due to listening these rhymes help the
students to learn the English language in the same way they did with his mother tongue
and provide them more opportunities to develop different skills pronunciation, listening,
speaking, grammar, vocabulary and cultural knowledge.
This work was elaborated with the purpose of optimizing English language learning
in the classroom. Through an observation made to students of the elementary basic
education of Alfredo Cisneros Alfredo Cisneros School during the school year 2016-
2017 which determined the importance of using childhood rhymes in order to improve
their pronunciation because the children have been leaning English recently. So they
can learn English in a better and natural way, that’s why this work is elaborated to
110
proposes a varied of listening activities that help students to develop their skills and feel
motivated to learn the language.
These nursery rhymes include different vocabulary and basic grammar structures.
For teachers, it is practical because searching activities focused in activities to young
learners could be arduous, so these activities provide facilities to the teacher. For
students, these activities are attractive because they are based on their ages and interests.
Also it is focus in the English hours classes they have because according with the
Ministry of Education the elementary basic education has only three hours per week.
Feasibility
The proposal is a didactic manual with a set of childhood rhymes to stimulate the
students to use the language to communicate, and it will catch the attention to others
English teachers who have been working with children recently because it is a new
program of the curriculum of ministry of education.
This proposal is feasible because in the Unidad Educativa Alfredo Cisneros exists
the possibility of applying this proposal with the students of the third year of basic
education. These students have a technological project of the minister of education that
is the use of tablets and internet connection in the classroom, which was useful at the
time of applying the proposal.
Methodology
This classroom project was practical, applying active and interactive methodologies
such as Total Physical Response TPR and Communicative Language Teaching CLT
that take into account the playful factor; because it allows children learning when they
are participating in activities in which the main objective is not to show grammatical
structures but to use the foreign language in an oral way. It is fundamental in this
proposal, because the goal is to expose the leaners to meaningful language through
different playful activities focus in nursery rhymes so the young learners start to feel
confident with themselves to pronounce words in English.
111
In addition, it is important to mention that when teachers work with kids the
methodologies are flexible, because it allows the students to use their own learning
styles without the extreme rigidities traditional methodologies.
Type of plan
The proposal is didactic guide which contains nursery rhymes and resources to help
teachers to promote the learning of the English language with their students in order to
facilitate the process of acquired the correct pronunciation.
These activities have the purpose to encourage the students to learn and enjoy
English developing skills in a natural way.
The activities were chosen specific for students of elementary basic education who
have been learned basic vocabulary, simple grammar structures and basic expression.
Diagnosis
A check list was applied for the initial diagnosis with 64 students legally enrolled
according to the institution´s secretary. The students are in the third year of basic
education 35 are from the class A and 29 from class B in the afternoon section of the
Unidad Educativa Alfredo Cisneros in the Quito city
Development
This section arises from the conception of developing the linguistic skills specific
pronunciation of the students through motivational nursery rhymes activities that
encourage students to use the English language in an oral way. Third grade elementary
school students are about seven years old, so they have a profile in which it would be
feasible to work with childhood rhymes because they are kids who are motivated to
learn English.
Implementation
The schedule for the implementation of this proposal was eight weeks, three hours
per week during this time the activities were applied. The activities were adapted about
the topics that the national curriculum proposes for this school year. The activities were
sing childhood songs, watched videos, listened and repeated chants, tongue twisters,
112
riddles, and played childhood games. To apply it we needed the technological tools
like: laptop, speakers, tablets, internet connection. Also we used pictures, posters, flash
cards, worksheets, others.
Evaluation
At the begging of the project, we started to evaluate the students from two groups
the control and experimental using a check list. It is important to clarify that it is the
first year that they have English as a foreign language, so they do not have previous
knowledge.
The results of the application of these nursery rhymes are measured through a check
list. This instrument allowed me to identify behavior with respect to attitudes, abilities
and skills that the students developed during the project application. Further, the
relevance, reflective thinking and interactivity were taken account.

Objectives
General
To develop young leaner´s English pronunciation through the use of childhood rhymes.
Specifics:
Literature Review
Using the right strategies have allowed to improve the teachers’ work making the
sessions more dynamic, that the students carry out an active learning through their
active participation in the activities. So in that way teachers can develop the
competences and contents of the national curriculum propose.
Nursery rhymes
Charles A. Temple, Miriam A. Martinez & Junko Yokota define the nursery rhymes “as
a short poem or song for children, usually composed by an anonymous poet; these
verses are highly rhythmic, tightly rhymed, and popular with small children”. They had
been created many years ago that’s why they are rich in culture. They have been
transmitted generation by generation.
115
Michaela Bubíková (Bubíková, 2015) in her research project say that Nursery Rhymes
are “very short stories of folk origin that are easily remembered. They are sung or said
and the children can also accompany them with other activities and physical
movement”.
Nursery Rhymes such as riddles, tongue twisters, chants, songs, among others,
constitute a series of resources that will help the development of oral English language
in young learners, as they carry out varied and rich activities of thought and explore the
capabilities of their intellect.
It is very important to mix them and the fun to develop the pronunciation in the young
learners. The childhood rhymes are so simple to use that their simply require the
interaction between the child and the adult that strengthens that communication.
Nursery Rhymes are still being used to support language development, both in
acquisition of the mother tongue and learning of foreign languages. The childhood
rhymes have a variety of categories like: tongue twisters, riddles, chants, clapping
rhymes, songs, among others which function as songs as well (Prosic-Santovac, Making
the Match: Traditional Nursery Rhymes and Teaching English, 2015)
Chant
Sonja Dunn said that chant is a “rhythmic group of words, which is like a poem. It is
good at looking for opportunities to involve children who are learning to work with
words in order to practice pronunciation and vocabulary which is characterized by
repetition” (Dunn, 2012).
116
Tongue twister
Tongue twisters are a group of words that are difficult to practice that’s why they are
challenging for the students. They are a fun way to work in class and also they ae very
helpful to develop pronunciation.
Riddles
Riddles are very attractive and challenged for children because of the playful nature
that stimulate the children to think and interact with others development their language
proficient.
Songs
Stephanie Przybylek (Przybylek, 2017) said that song is “a short piece of music,
usually with words. It combines melody and vocals” Songs are one of the best
teaching tools because they help teachers to improve a great classroom environment and
develop students’ language skills.
Games
Bernard Suits defined a game as “structured form of play, usually undertaken for
enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool”. They are activities that are
development in the classrooms with the purpose of motivate and help students to learn
to learn English. So that they are didactic and effective teach
Pronunciation
Pronunciation Importance
Pronunciation is one of the most important language skills because it helps people
understand what is the message when they are communicating with others. However, it
has become one of the most common problems when students are learning English due
to incorrect pronunciation can create negative impression, confusion and ineffective
communication between who transmit and who receive the message (MacDonal, 2003).
Introducing sounds
Imitate the sound
Remember the sound
Repeat the sound
Interact with others producing the sound
Input
When teachers work in pronunciation with meaningful material that helps students to
acquire the adequate fluently, the correct stresses, linking of sounds, the rhythm, pauses
and intonation. Aspects that make students feel confident and satisfy with themselves.
Rhythm is defined as “the sense of movement in speech, marked by the stress, timing,
and quantity of syllables”
118
Jones (1960) said that Intonation - "the variations which take place in the pitch of the
voice in connected speech, i.e. the variations in the pitch of the musical note produced
by vibration of the vocal cords."
