Simple Past
we are going to divide the simple past into two categories: the simple past with the verb to be, and simple
past with other verbs.

Simple past with the verb to be

When we use simple past, we want to express situations or actions that are already done. For example:
any action that you did yesterday or last year. When we use the verb to be to make sentences in this
tense, we need to remember that it means (ser or estar) and that its past forms are; (was and were).
To make sentences in the simple past using the verb to be, all we need is a subject, was or were,
depending on the subject, and a complement.
For example: Leonardo was here yesterday (Leonardo estuvo aquí ayer). As you see, we used “was”
because “Leonardo” is a singular pronoun, and for singular subjects or pronouns, we use “was. Pay
attention that in the sentence; Javier was a good person, the word “was” means “era” and not “estuvo”.
In the contrary, in; Javier was here yesterday, the word, “was”, changes adopting the meaning of “estuvo”,
due to the context of the sentence. Just remember that if the pronoun is plural, we use “were” instead
off ”was”. For example: my parents were very intelligent when they were in high school.

Negations with the verb to be

To make negative sentences in the past using the verb to be, all you have to do is to add the particle
“not” after this verb. For example: affirmative- They were my friends, negative - they were not my friends,
affirmative - Aníbal was here at night, negative- Aníbal was not here at night. Please remember that the
long way is considered more formal, while the contraction is more common in English conversations. By
the way, the contraction for “was not” is; “wasn’t”, and the one for “were not” is: “weren’t”.

Questions with the verb to be

Since the verb to be is so powerful, it can make its own questions. To make questions in the past using
the verb to be, just front the verb before the subject. For example: affirmative, my mother was here last
year; question- was my mother here last year? Affirmative- the shows were good, question- were the
shows good? As you see, all we have to do is to front the verb before the subject, and keep the same
structure.

Simple Past with other verbs

To make past sentences using other verbs, we have to remember that in English, we have to types of
verbs; regular verbs, and irregular once.
For regular verbs, all we need to do is to add “ed” to the infinitive, or original form of the verb. For example,
if we want to conjugate the verb “work”, in the past, we just have to add “ed”, and the verb changes to its
simple past form. In other words, A sentence using this verb would be; I worked here yesterday (Yo
trabajé aquí ayer).

Negations with other verbs

To make a simple past sentence with other verbs negative, we need to put the word “ did not” between
the subject, and the verb of the sentence, and change the verb to its simple form.

Questions with other verbs

To make questions in the past using other verbs, we will need the help of the particle “did “. To ask
questions in the past, just put this word before the subject and put the verb in its original form, keeping
the regular structure for questions. For example: affirmative- My brother ate Pizza yesterday, question-
did my brother eat Pizza yesterday? Affirmative- you washed my car last night, question- did you wash
my car last night?
The three things you have to remember to make past questions using other verbs are that you have to
add “ did “ before the subject, put the verb in its original form, and that you do the same for all the subjects.
Practice:
Complete the following sentences using was or were in the provided spaces. Remember, the sentences
can be affirmative, negative, or interrogative.

2. I’m pretty sure, She ________ a good student.
3. My friends ________ very happy yesterday.
4. I ________ born in 1991.

7. ________ you in New York in 1999?
8. ________ it very hot yesterday?
9. The trip to Guanacaste ________ just fantastic.
10. ________ you tired last night at the party?
