The Museum of Lost and Found
Paris is famous for its museums: The Louvre, Musée d‟Orsay and Centre Georges Pompidou, to
name a few. But not many people know about the Museum of Lost and Found. It was founded
over 200 years ago by Napoleon to collect lost objects from the streets of Paris. While people
were travelling around Paris they often lost their personal items. Originally, it was an office
where the police kept all these lost items. Today, it is a unique museum; inside you can see some
of the most interesting and unusual objects in Paris. The museum is still looked after by the Paris
police. In the past the museum was closed to the public but today tourists can take a look at what
is inside. The most common lost items are keys, umbrellas and gloves. The police find them on
different forms of public transport: trains, buses, the Paris Métro, taxis and the airport. The
objects change with the seasons; in winter you can see coats, hats and even skis. In the summer,
roller skates and sunglasses are common. The police not only wait for people to come and claim
their items, they also do detective work to try and identify the owners. One year, the police found
a small bag full of diamonds and a doctor‟s business card. Most objects are only kept for three
months because so many new items arrive every day. The police keep the extraordinary or very
valuable items, for instance, five human skulls, a leg made out of wood, a box of 200 blue
butterflies and two wedding dresses! In one small room there is the largest collection of one
object: 3,500 mobile phones. Sometimes one of them rings and the owner is happily reunited
with their phone.

Originally, it was
an office where the police kept all these lost items. Today, it is a unique museum; inside you can
see some of the most interesting and unusual objects in Paris. In the past the museum was closed
to the public but today tourists can take a look at what is inside. Many different objects are lost
each week. The most common items are keys, umbrellas and gloves. The police often find them
on different forms of public transport: trains, buses, the Paris Métro, taxis and the airport. The
objects change with the seasons; in winter you can see coats, hats and even skis. In the summer,
roller skates and sunglasses are common. The police not only wait for people to come and claim
their items, they also do detective work to try and identify the owners. One year, they found a
small bag full of diamonds and a doctor‟s business card. They called the doctor, who identified
the owner of the diamonds, a woman living in New York. She lost them while she was on the
Métro. She caught the first plane back to Paris to get her diamonds. Most objects are only kept
for three months because so many new items arrive every day and there is no room to store them.
However, the police keep extraordinary or very valuable items, for instance, five human skulls, a
leg made out of wood, a box of 200 blue butterflies and two wedding dresses! In one small room
there is the largest collection of one object: 3,500 mobile phones. Sometimes one of them rings
and the owner is happily reunited with their phone.

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It is 7,000,000 square kilometres
and stretches across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador, Bolivia and French Guinea.
Over half of the planet‟s rainforest is in the Amazon. It performs an important function. The
plants take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. In this way they clean the atmosphere because
carbon dioxide is a harmful greenhouse gas.
Scientists are particularly interested in the plants of the Amazon. This is because for thousands
of years the people living there used plants to treat illnesses. Different plants can be used to cure
different things. For instance, there are plants that can reduce a temperature and those that can
help with headaches, toothaches and muscle pains. The Amazon people who have knowledge of
these plants are called „medicine men‟.
Scientists have discovered plants in the Amazon that can treat diseases. Drauzio Varella, a
researcher from Brazil, is looking for a cure for cancer in the Amazon. It is difficult because
there are so many plant species. He and his team test them to find out if they have medicinal
properties. This takes a long time. Another difficulty is the deforestation of the rainforests which
kills plants and animals. If it continues, scientists won‟t discover new medicines. And, as the
Amazon people use plants in their everyday life, this makes them very dependent on their natural
environment. Destruction of the rainforest threatens their way of life.

The Amazing Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It is 7,000,000 square kilometres
and stretches across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador, Bolivia and French Guinea.
Over half of the planet‟s rainforest is in the Amazon. It performs an important function. The
plants take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. In this way they clean the atmosphere because
carbon dioxide is a harmful greenhouse gas.
The medical community is particularly interested in the plants of the Amazon. This is because
for thousands of years the people living there used plants to treat illnesses. Different plants can
be used to cure different things. For instance, there are plants that can reduce a temperature and
those that can help ease headaches, toothaches and muscle pains. The Amazon people who have
knowledge of these plants are called „medicine men‟. When they get old they pass on their
knowledge to apprentices; younger men who will eventually become medicine men too.
Scientists have identified plants in the Amazon that can treat diseases, including malaria. One
researcher, Drauzio Varella, from Brazil, is looking for a cure for cancer in the Amazon. The
work is difficult because there are so many plant species to work through. He and his team test
each one to find out if they have medicinal properties. This takes a long time and is very detailed
work. Another difficulty that scientists encounter is the deforestation of the rainforests. Not only
are the plants and trees impacted by this, but the animals lose their habitats and have nowhere to
live. As a result, many animals die. If people continue to destroy the rainforest, we will certainly
lose our chance to discover valuable new medicines. Moreover, as the Amazon people use plants
in their everyday life, this makes them very dependent on their natural environment. Destruction
of the rainforest threatens their way of life.

When he was only nine, Cameron Johnson from Virginia started a business – making invitation
cards for his parents‟ party. His neighbours liked his designs and paid him to make greetings
cards for them. He called his company „Cheers and Tears‟. When he was 11, he earned several
thousand dollars from the business. He used the money to start an online business. By the time
he was fifteen, he was making $400,000 a month from it! Before he left high school it was worth
$1,000,000! Now Cameron is a business expert. He appears on TV shows and talks to young
people about business.

Fraser Doherty, from Edinburgh, started making *jam when he was fourteen. He experimented
with his grandmother‟s recipes to produce his own jam. Initially, he donated the money to his
favourite charity, Greenpeace. His jam became popular and many people bought it. By the time
he was sixteen there was a large demand for Fraser‟s „SuperJam‟. A supermarket asked Fraser to
sell it in their stores. Fraser used the money he earned to develop the business. Soon he was
making £1.4 million in sales! He wrote a jam cookbook and a business guide, SuperBusiness.
Fraser continues to make jam today – that‟s what he loves to do.

American brother-and-sister team David and Catherine Cook became millionaires by turning a
yearbook into a popular website in America. A yearbook is a book that contains pictures and
information about the students at a school for a particular year. When the Cooks moved to a new
school they looked at the school yearbook to find out if there was anyone they knew. That‟s
when they got the idea – why not put it online so everyone could see it? Their older brother
Geoff was impressed. He decided to help by giving them the money they needed to start their
company. Their website, myyearbook.com, made it easy for anyone to connect with their friends.
It didn‟t take long for their business to become a success – it is now worth close to $100,000
million. With the success of Facebook, they changed their message to focus on making new
friends rather than connecting with friends you know. Their website name is now meetme.com.

Business Profiles: Teenage Millionaires

Cameron Johnson
When he was only nine, Cameron Johnson from Virginia started a business – making invitation
cards for a party his parents were having. (1) He called his company „Cheers and Tears‟. When
he was eleven, he earned several thousand dollars from the business. He used the money to start
an online business where internet users get paid to look at adverts. By the time he was fifteen, he
was making $400,000 a month from this! Before he left high school it was worth $1,000,000!
Now Cameron is a global business expert. He appears on TV shows and gives lectures about
business to young people.
Fraser Doherty
Fraser Doherty, from Edinburgh, started making *jam when he was fourteen. (2) Initially, he
donated the money to his favourite charity, Greenpeace. His jam became popular and many
people bought it. By the time he was sixteen there was a large demand for Fraser‟s „SuperJam‟
as he called it. (3) Fraser used the money he earned to develop the business. Soon he was making
£1.4 million in sales! He wrote a jam cookbook and a business guide, SuperBusiness. Fraser
continues to make jam today – that‟s what he loves to do. He‟s also a popular business speaker
because he‟s so cheerful, energetic and inspirational.

David and Catherine Cook

American brother-and-sister team David and Catherine Cook became millionaires by turning a
simple yearbook into one of the most popular websites in America. A yearbook is a book that
contains pictures and information about the students at a school for a particular year. When the
Cooks moved to a new school they looked at the school yearbook to find out if there was anyone
they knew. That‟s when they got the idea – why not put it online so everyone could see it? But
they needed help. (4) Their website, myyearbook.com, made it easy for anyone to look up and
connect with their friends. It didn‟t take long for their business to become a success – it is now
worth close to $100,000 million. With the success of Facebook, they changed their message to
focus on making new friends rather than connecting with friends you know. Their website name
is now meetme.com.

What makes us happy?

There has been a lot of research into happiness. Researchers have found that many people
believe that money, a dream job or a big house will make them happy, but scientists have
discovered that actually material things don‟t play a big role in our happiness.
1 _________
Scientists found that people feel happier when they have an experience rather than when they
buy something. For example, buying something that you really want will make you happy
temporarily – for about two weeks. But then after that you will be left with a feeling of
emptiness. Scientists conducted an experiment to compare what happened when a group of
students bought something and what happened when they had an enjoyable experience. They
found that the feelings created from having an experience, like spending time with friends or
family, are much stronger and longer lasting than what we feel when we buy something.
2 __________
Fitness is the key to good health. But did you know that exercise can make you happy? When we
exercise, we produce chemicals in our brain that make us feel positive and energetic. Doing just
half an hour of exercise a day can improve how we feel. Researchers did experiments with
people suffering from depression. The people were asked to exercise every day. They recorded
how they felt before and after the exercise over the course of a month. The results showed a
significant improvement in happiness levels.
3 ___________
Hobbies are also important for happiness and well-being. Hobbies can make you healthier
because they can lower your stress levels by taking your mind off any difficulties that you are
facing and focusing your mind on something else. Hobbies are also a great way to meet new
people and make new friends. Sharing a common interest can make you feel closer to others.
Learning a new skill through a hobby also increases your self-esteem and this also makes you
feel happier.

____________________________________

Hi Mel,
How‟s it going? I saw something online today that I think you will love! Have you ever heard of
Brandon Stanton? He‟s got an amazing blog called „Humans of New York‟. Have a look at it
sometime! Are you still looking for someone interesting to write about for your English project?
Well, I‟ve done a bit of research about this guy for you! He‟s had a pretty interesting life so far!
Here‟s what I found out:
“For Brandon Stanton of Atlanta, Georgia photography was just a hobby. That changed in 2010
when he lost his job buying and selling financial shares for Gambit Trading. It was then that he
decided to go professional. He started taking photos in Chicago before touring America to follow
his passion. He took photos of city scenes and some natural, honest photos of the cities‟
inhabitants. He visited New York in August 2010, not planning to spend long there, but he soon
found the city streets perfect for his art and decided to stay. He started asking permission to take
photos of people and chatted to them, finding out about their lives. He posted his photos in an
album on his Facebook profile page at first before creating a separate Facebook page and a blog
so that more people could see them. Since 2010, he has taken thousands of photos of New
Yorkers and he has seen his idea develop into something big. His blog now has nearly twelve
million Facebook followers. Under each photo is a sentence or a quotation or sometimes a story
that reveals something about the lives and experiences of his subjects. Some are funny, some are
sad, some are exciting and some are just incredible.
Stanton‟s success has also been incredible: he has been featured in Vogue magazine and he has
even taken photos of the people who work at Facebook. He has also published a book based on
the blog, which reached number one in the The New York Times Best Sellers list in 2013.
Brandon continues to work as a photographer and blogger but remains modest: „So far, my job
has gone pretty well. I‟ve taken nearly 5,000 photos of people and I‟ve written 50 stories. And
I‟ve met some amazing people along the way.‟”
Mel, when you‟ve looked at the blog, tell me what you think. I think he‟s created something
really beautiful!
Speak soon,
Caitlin xxx

Hi Mel,
How‟s it going? I saw something online today that I think you will love! Have you ever heard of
Brandon Stanton? He‟s got an amazing blog called „Humans of New York‟. Have a look at it
sometime! Are you still looking for someone interesting to write about for your English project?
Well, I‟ve done a bit of research about this guy for you! Here‟s what I found out:
“For Brandon Stanton of Atlanta, Georgia photography was just a hobby. That changed in 2010
when he lost his job buying and selling financial shares for Gambit Trading. It was then that he
decided to become a professional photographer. He started taking photos in Chicago before
touring America to follow his passion. He took photos of city scenes and some frank and candid
photos of the cities‟ inhabitants. He visited New York in August 2010, not planning to spend
long there, but he soon found the city streets perfect for his art and decided to stay. He started
asking permission to take photos of people and chatted to them, finding out about their lives. He
posted his photos in an album on his Facebook profile page at first before creating a separate
Facebook page and a blog to gain a wider audience. Since 2010, he has taken thousands of
photos of New Yorkers and he has seen his idea develop into something big. His blog now has
nearly twelve million Facebook followers. Under each photo is a sentence or a quotation or
sometimes a story that reveals something about the lives and experiences of his subjects.
Stanton‟s success has also been incredible: he has been featured in Vogue magazine and he has
even taken photos of the people who work at Facebook. He has also published a book based on
the blog, which reached number one in the The New York Times Best Sellers list in 2013. Time
magazine has added him to their list of „30 Under 30‟ – people under 30 who have changed the
world in a positive way. Brandon continues to upload his photos to the blog but remains modest:
„So far, my job has gone pretty well. I‟ve taken nearly 5,000 photos of people and I‟ve written 50
stories. And I‟ve met some amazing people along the way.‟”
I think Brandon has found something that really brings people together! His blog has definitely
shown me that although we‟re all different and live in different places, we all share the same
problems, hopes and dreams. When you‟ve had a look at it, tell me what you think!
Speak soon,
Caitlin xxx

Jessica Watson was inspired by a story she heard on the news when she was 11. The story was
about Jesse Martin, an eighteen-year-old who became the youngest person to sail around the
world. When Jessica was thirteen, she told her parents she wanted to do the same thing. She
trained hard for life alone at sea. She knew she needed to be physically and mentally ready for
the journey. It wasn‟t easy for her; some people advised her not to do it and she was caught in a
dangerous storm in the Atlantic. Despite the difficulties, she made it and achieved her goal on 15
May 2010 aged only sixteen years old.
Ed Stafford holds the Guinness World Record for being the first person to walk the length of the
Amazon River, a journey that took him over two years. He walked an incredible 4,000 miles
from Peru to Brazil. Along the way he was constantly attacked by various insects and was almost
eaten by a giant snake. He filmed his dangerous journey and it was made into a TV programme.
During his adventure, Ed observed a great deal of deforestation. He used his expedition to help
raise public awareness of the environmental issues affecting the Amazon and to inspire people to
get out and explore the great outdoors.
Eric Larsen has spent over fifteen years exploring the North and South Poles and has dedicated
his life to sharing his love for polar environments with the public. Over the years he has seen
how the poles have been negatively affected by global warming. This inspired him to do the
„Save the Poles‟ project. This was a 365-day expedition to the North Pole, the South Pole and the
top of Mount Everest. Amazingly, he was able to survive in temperatures as low as -50 degrees.
He became the first person in history to reach all three „poles‟ within a year.

____________________: The Incredible Story of José Salvador Alvarenga
This is the story of a man who spent thirteen months in the Pacific Ocean before he was
discovered on an island. José Salvador Alvarenga, originally from El Salvador but living in
Mexico, was on a fishing trip off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico in December 2012. He was
fishing for sharks with a fifteen-year-old boy. Their boat broke down after a storm and they were
left drifting in the Pacific Ocean. The boy died after four months because he didn‟t eat the birds,
fish and turtles that José caught and killed with a knife to survive. José said that he didn‟t see
land for a long time, only the endless blue ocean. He soon lost track of time and could only tell
when it was night and day. Finally, his boat drifted to the small of Ebon in the Pacific. The
islanders were shocked when they saw him. His hair and beard were very long and his skin was
badly sunburned. His legs were very swollen as well. They gave him food and water and took
him to a hospital to recover.
When the world‟s media found out about José, he became very famous. But some people find his
story a little too incredible. When he was found he wasn‟t very thin. And when questioned about
his story he got a lot of his facts confused. The case still remains a mystery. There‟s no doubt
that José has been through a physical and mental ordeal, but did he really spend such a long time
alone? If not, then where was he and what was he doing? Or, could he simply be telling the
truth? Join us as we investigate one of the greatest stories of survival in modern times.
