Simple Past / pasado simple

5. Read the following explanations:
En oraciones con dos verbos solo se agrega -ed al verbo inicial para transfórmalo en pasado:
(Present) I decide to travel to Japan
(simple past) I decided to travel to Japan

-ed rules / reglas del -ed

1. When verb ends in –e, you only add –d at the ends of the verb:
Example: like --- liked
2. The verb ends in a consonant before “Y”, change “Y” for “I” and add –ed.
Example: Study --- studied
3..CVC: If the verb has only 3 or 4 letters and its last three letters are organized like CVC
(consonant, vowel, consonant), you must double the last letter and add –ed.
Example: Stop= stopped
BUT, we DO NOT double the final consonant when the word ends in W, X or Y

4…Most verb use this rule; you must only add –ed at the end of the verb.
Example: Walk= walked

Last summer, Joel and Sara travelled to England for two

weeks. They travelled in August and stayed in a college with
other students in Brighton, the South of England. It was
really fantastic because they talked to a lot of students of
different nationalities and learned a lot about other
cultures and customs. Of course, they learned a lot of
English too because they practiced it every day. In the
morning they studied a little, they asked the teacher to
speak slowly when necessary and answered her questions.
In the afternoon they visited different places or played
different sports at the college. It was so much fun. They
often walked down to the beach with their new friends and
played or chatted. In the evening they were tired so they sometimes watched videos or played board
games.

The best days were Saturday and Sunday because they traveled to London. The city is very big and they
visited all the monuments like Big Ben, The London Eye and Buckingham Palace. They wanted to see
the Queen but they didn’t see her, only her guards! They liked everything in the city but their favorite
thing was the museums, especially Madam Tussards. There were lots of realistic figures of famous
people there.

At the end of the two weeks, they were sad to return home. The holidays were fun and different from
usual. They cried a little when they waved goodbye to their new friends and promised to write or send
emails when they arrived home.

3. True or false? Mark with an ( X) on the correct option:

Expresions for past tense:

Estas expresiones de tiempo se usan usualmente
al final de las oraciones para establecer un
tiempo determinado en el cual la acción tomó
lugar.
Example:
Daniel and Luisa could swim very well 15 years
ago. / Daniel y Luisa podian nadir bien 15 años
atrás.

Sujeto + verbo irregular en pasado + complemento del verbo + ( expresións for past tense)
Cesar fought with his mother last year

She had a dog last year / Ella tenía un perro el año pasado.
Luz hit a car yesterday
Yarixa began to study English yesterday

4. Read the following explanation and on an extra sheet of paper write 10 sentences using only the
verbs from item 1 and the above time expressions. Finally, translate them into Spanish.

Negative sentences:

En oraciones negativas se usa el auxiliar :

didn´t / did not para poder expresar
“no”, algo importante es que al usarse el
auxiliar didn´t / did not el verb debe ir
en infinitivo (presente), lo cual en verbos
Examples: regulares implica quitar el “ed”.
Affirmative: she played soccer yesterday
Negative : She didn´t play soccer yesterday.

5. On an extra sheet of paper, turn the above 10 sentences into negative ones and translate them into
