WHAT IS THE PAST PERFECT?

QUÉ ES EL PASADO PERFECTO?

1. El pasado perfecto en inglés se forma combinando “had” con

el participio pasado del verbo. La forma equivalente en español es el
pluscuamperfecto. En general, se emplea en acciones que ocurrieron antes
de otra acción en el pasado.

2. Diferencia entre Present Perfect y Past Perfect

3. El past perfect es muy similar al present perfect debido a que el evento también se inició en el
pasado. Sin embargo, la diferencia entre los eventos es que el evento del past
perfect también terminó en el pasado. Esto se puede utilizar con un tiempo especificado. Por
ejemplo, “I had studied in China last year”. Esto también implica que el evento sucedió hace
mucho tiempo.

I had visited my friend twice. (Yo había visitado a mi amigo dos veces.)
She had written her first novel. (Ella había escrito su primera novela.)
They had seen that movie five times. (Ellas habían visto esa película cinco veces.)

Negative sentences oraciones negativas

Sujeto + auxiliar “had not” (hadn’t) + pasado participio + complemento

You had not heard the noise. (Yo no había escuchado el ruido.)
We hadn’t bought the bed. (Nosotros / nosotras no habíamos comprado la cama.)
He hadn’t cooked seafood before (Él no había cocinado mariscos antes.)

Nota: en las oraciones negativas podemos usar la forma larga (had not) o la forma corta (hadn’t) del
auxiliar. La opción con contracción es la que más se usa en la estructura del pasado perfecto.
Auxiliar “had” + sujeto + pasado participio + complemento?

Last night, Dane and Emily danced in a competition. They danced a salsa dance. They had practiced for 6
months before they danced in the competition. They were very good.

Dane and Emily's friends were in the audience. Before that night, they had never seen Dane and Emily
dance. In fact, Dane and Emily had never danced in front of anyone before the competition.

After everyone had danced, the judges announced the winners. Dane and Emily won! They were the best
dancers in the competition. Emily said she had never practiced so hard before! She was glad they had
practiced a lot.
