 How often do you use the phone?

I use the phone very often.

 What do you most use the phone for (for work, to get information, make appointments, to chat to
friend and family?
I use the phone to communicate with my friends and family, organize my daughter´s home work, and
coordinate meetings by Zoom or whatsapp.

 Do you have a mobile phone? Is it always on? How often do you use it?

I use it frequently and it is always on, but when I go to sleep, I have to turn off.

 Do you prefer to phone people or to send text messages or emails? Why?

It depends, when I want to communicate with family or close friends I prefer to call them but if I have
to talk with a colleague I prefer sending a messages.

Yes, I don´t usually go to parties. Once or twice by month

 What type of parties do you go?


I go to parties of my friends or family for their birthdays, sometimes I go to the disco with close
friends.

 Do you enjoy talking to people you don´t know?

Yes, I really enjoy talking to people who met recently because it is a way of being sociable, share
different opinions, preferences, experiences of life.

You are going to tell an anecdote about an object you lost or found. Think about these questions and make
notes.

 What was it? Was there anything special about the item?

Once I lost a box of cups and plates that were family heirlooms, this belonged to my grandmother, it
was the wedding gift she received when she married my grandfather and since she died, she stayed
at home.

 Where and when did you lose or find it? How did it happen?

We were cleaning the house, to throw away the old things that we no longer use, but we kept those
relics in a box so as not to get confused, at the same time, we also put the old objects in boxes to later
throw them away. In the afternoon, at night, when we went to dinner and put everything away, we
realized that we could not find the relics and thought we had thrown them away, we started looking
and we did not find it.
Then a week went by and we resigned ourselves to saying that we made a mistake in putting away
and throwing away the boxes, until my mother went to her room to clean and found a box under her
bed and they were the missing relics.

 What did you do with the item you found? / Did you find the item you lost?

When we found it, we decided to change and decorate it so as not to get confused and keep it in a
safe place.

 Do people get angry when they see or hear mistakes in your language?

Yes, most people get angry when they hear or see mistakes in the language because they think they
are disrespectful.

 What kinds of mistakes do people make (for example grammar, pronunciation, mixing up words)?

People make mistakes in omitting grammatical rules when writing or when they want to say an
expression and change the way words are spelled or pronounced and mixing Spanish with English.

 Do you think your language is changing? How?


In my opinion, my language is changing, because many people mixing up Spanish with English in
conversations

4.1 Read Birthdays: the beginning of a new year of life.

 When did ordinary people start celebrating birthdays?

Ordinary people began to celebrate birthdays in twelfth century.

4.2 Work in groups of three.

1. What is the custom today?
The custom of people is that they send birthday greetings using cards and postcards, they also
give gift cards and other people send electronic cards as a fast and ecological option.

2. Where and when did this custom start?


The custom probably started in England in the early nineteenth century when the first postage
stamp was issued.

1. What is the custom today?
People use to congratulate others on their birthday and sing a traditional song 'Happy Birthday to
you'.

2. Where and when did this custom start?


The music for the song 'Happy Birthday to you' was written by two sisters in America in 1893 with
different lyrics and in 1935 the writers´ sister won copyright of the song.

1. What is the custom today?
Today people use to place candles on a birthday cake to find out the age of the birthday boy and
this person blows out the candles and sometimes makes a wish.

2. Where and when did this custom start?


The custom probably started in Greece about three thousand years ago and could also have
started in Germany in the Middle Ages approximately.

4.3 Tell your group about the custom you read about.
Reading tells us about the customs of different people, for example, some are used to making cards or
gifts, other families are used to singing "Happy Birthday to you" and finally some put the person's age
on the cake, turn off the sail and make wishes.
All customs had different years of creation, these were in England, America and in the Middle Ages.

4.4 Work in pairs. Choose one of the tasks below.


A. Talk about birthday customs in your country. Answer these questions.

 What food do you eat?

In my country, the customs of each family are different, some cook typical foods from their region, for
example they cook stews, spicy or salty foods and in my family, we are used to preparing the birthday
boy's favorite food

 Do you sing Happy Birthday? Do you cheer?


If, before blowing out the candles on the cake, we sang 3 songs "A happy birthday Christ will give you",
and Las Mañanitas" and then drink a toast.

 Is it normal to give presents and cards?

Sometimes it is normal to always give gifts or cards, as in other families it only matters to be the whole
family or friends, but sometimes it is difficult to find the perfect gift because people have different
preferences.

 Are there any other special customs?


There are special birthday customs, in my family we are used to celebrating every birthday since a baby
is born.
It is also customary to celebrate the first year of the baby, the three years of the child, the fifteen years
of women and the eighteen years of men, also celebrate the anniversary of marriage, etc.

 Are certain birthdays more important than others? What happens?

In my opinion, it is not true because all birthdays are important and the important thing is to be healthy
and the whole family together, so we are sharing something simple and full of love.

 Is it rude to ask somebody how old they have become on their birthday?
It is not rude to ask how old he is on his birthday, but some people do not like it because they are
ashamed and that is why they put a question mark on the cake and there are other people who say
their age with great pride and happiness.

 What is the celebration?

A celebration is a party, act or other type of festive event, it aims to remember or commemorate an
event or honor a person, it can also be a birthday party, a meeting for the anniversary.

 What do people do?

In these celebrations people usually include festive or religious acts depending on the celebration, as
something solemn and there are also celebrations that take place in the streets of the town, such as
parades, concerts, dances, festivals, fairs, children's games, bullfights bulls and rides.

 What food do you eat?

The food is depending on the celebration, but most people prepare a menu that includes vegetables,
fish, stews, salty or spicy foods, they also prepare special desserts where they decorate it with fruits or
chocolates or traditional foods from where they live.

 Do you wear special clothes?

The clothes are special according to the celebration, we can wear casual, elegant and sporty clothes,
some people wear typical clothes when it is a patronal celebration.

 Do you give presents?


Yes, I do.

 Do people sing songs or give speeches?

There are people who usually sing the favorite songs of the celebrity and a member of his/her family
give a speech.

 Is there dancing?
Most of the celebrities if there is a dance, the most common is the dance of the cumbia or the typical
dances of the region when the celebration is about to begin or end, but when it is a patronal
celebration there are folk dances of the different groups.

A. You are colleagues at a conference. The conference has just ended, but you will see each other in a
couple of months at another conference. Say goodbye to each other.

A: There were a lot of people at the conference we had with the other colleagues.

B: If you're right, over a thousand people attended, the conference topics were interesting and the
other colleagues did very well.

A: Well, I have to go to the airport because in 2 hours I travel, but in 3 months we will see each other
again for the next conference.

B: Come on, I will accompany you to the airport and have a good trip, we are in communication to
select new colleagues for the conference.
