 USE

 When we report what someone said without using their exact words.
(Cuando informamos lo que alguien dijo sin usar sus palabras exactas).
Apart from say and tell, other verbs used to introduce reported
statements are add, explain, inform, etc.
 IN DIRECT SPEECH

We repeat the exact words that someone said. We usually use the verb say and the words

of the speaker are put in quotation marks. (Repetimos las palabras exactas que alguien

dijo. Usualmente usamos el verbo say y las palabras del hablante se ponen entre comillas).

EXAMPLE:
Marìa said, “Luis is on the phone” María dijo, “Luis está en el teléfono”.
IN REPORTED SPEECH

We report the meaning of what someone said, without using their exact words. We use a
reporting verb, usually say or tell, followed by that.

(Informamos el significado de lo que alguien dijo, sin usar sus palabras exactas. Usamos
un verbo informativo, generalmente say o tell, seguido de ese).
EXAMPLE:
Marìa said, that Luis was on the phone María dijo que Luis estaba en el teléfono.
USE THE SAY
 We use Say when there is direct object.
 Say + lo que se dijo directamente.

EXAMPLE:
"i can't play tennis", She said "No puedo jugar tenis", Ella dijo
She said that he couldn't play tennis Ella dijo que no podía jugar tenis
USE THE TELL
 We use tell when there is an indirect object.
 Cada vez que se dice en castellano algo así como ella me dijo, yo le dije, tú me dijiste o
nosotros les dijeron que se usa el verbo tell. 
 Tell + persona + lo que se dijo en reported speech.
EXAMPLE:
"I'll call you, Mark", she said "Te llamaré, Mark", dijo.
