MAKE-UP WATER
FACT:
The make up water requirement is determined
by the water treatment especialist based on the
composition of the water available at site to
determine the “cycles of concentration” which
will provide for a safe operation of the chiller.
186
CYCLES OF CONCENTRATION
Compares the concentration of solids in the
tower recirculating water to the concentration
in the make up water.
Example: Four cycles of concentration means
that the concentration of solids in the cooling
tower water is four times higher than the
concentration of solids in the make up water.
The water treatment specialist will determine
the value best suited for the job based on what
is dissolved in the available water supply.

EXAMPLE
Assume the cycles of concentration determined
for a site is 4. Determine the amount of cooling
tower make up water.
From the formula:
M=4 E = 1.33 x E

Make-up water = Tower evaporation rate + 33%

COOLING TOWER CAPACITY CONTROL
The capacity of a tower can be controlled varying
the air or water flow or both.
Water flow control is very rarely used because of
the problems it may cause with the performance
of the refrigeration equipment (fouling) and the
tower itself (water distribution and fouling). If done,
it should be done only after a careful analysis.
Air flow control is probably a more common form
of capacity control but should only be applied after
consultation with the tower and VFD manufacturer.
Although air flow reduction may save fan power, it
may not be sufficient to offset the increased power
consumption of the refrigeration equipment.
194
COOLING TOWER CAPACITY CONTROL
ASHRAE 90.1-2007 calls for fan motors ≥ 7½Hp
of heat rejection equipment to have fan speed
control with some exceptions:
