(clases 1 a 6).
alumnos regulares.

The philosophy behind its establishment is to stop wars between countries, and to provide
a platform for dialogue. The members of the UN consist of 193 member states, including
every internationally recognized sovereign state in the world but Vatican City. The UN is
headed by a Secretary-General.
Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the
World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The United
Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) delivers supplies to refugee camps, such as tent
insulation and flooring.
The United Nations Headquarters resides in international territory in New York City, with
further main offices at Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna. The organization is financed from
assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states, and has six official
languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Verdi´s Aida
clase 2 virtual
Aída de Verdi
Verdi´s Aida
The Latin word for “work” is opus. The plural of opus is opera, meaning “works.”
An opera combines several works. It contains orchestra music and vocal music in
addition to the plot, characters, and staging of a drama. An opera is a play set to
music.
Guiseppe Verdi is perhaps the best known of all Italian opera composers. His
opera Aida is a spectacular, colorful production. In 1871, this now-famous opera
was first performed in El Cairo, Egypt to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal.
Aida is a “grand” opera—which means that every word of the drama is sung. It is
the story of Princess Amneris, daughter of the King of Egypt, and her Ethiopian
slave Aida. It is a tragedy full of jealousy, treachery, and romance. Amneris is in
love with Radames, the captain of the king’s guard. But Radames loves Aida, the
princess’s beautiful handmaiden. Amneris wonders, “How can Radames prefer a
slave to a princess?” So she is filled with jealousy!
Captain Radames will lead the next battle against the Ethiopians. Princess
Amneris hopes that he will be victorious and the king will order him to marry
her. Aida, on the other hand, weeps constantly, worrying about Radames’ safety.
She also weeps because she carries a secret. Aida is really an Ethiopian princess,
23
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Arte y Cultura
but only Radames knows the truth! As a consequence, Aida is torn between
two loyalties. She prays for Radames’ safe return. Yet, how can she wish for the
defeat and death of her own countrymen?
A tragic final scene finds Aida (the soprano) and Radames (the tenor) singing
their death song as they lie trapped in a vault under a temple. “I have found
happiness at last,” Aida sings. “Beloved, I am here. I have come to die with you.
We will say goodbye to this world of misery and pain.”

objetiva. En este caso, “mí”.

What is Art?
clase 3 presencial
¿Qué es el Arte?
What is Art?
Functions of arts
Art has had a great number of different
functions throughout its history, making its purpose difficult to abstract or
quantify to any single concept. This does not imply that the purpose of Art is
"vague", but that it has had many unique, different reasons for being created.
Art can have a personal function, it is an expression of basic human instinct for
harmony, balance, rhythm. Art at this level is not an action or an object, but an
internal appreciation of balance and harmony (beauty), and therefore an aspect
of being human beyond utility. Art also provides a way to experience one's self in
relation to the universe. This experience may often come unmotivated, as one
appreciates art, music or poetry.
On the other hand, art may have a social function. At its simplest, art is a
form of communication. It seeks to entertain and bring about a particular
emotion or mood, for the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the viewer. Art may
also be an expression of social protest, seeking to question aspects of society.
Types of art
32
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Arte y Cultura
The oldest forms of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or
objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and
other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts;
however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the
practical considerations of use are more essential, in a way, than they usually
are in a painting, for example.
Music, theater, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and
other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of
art or the arts.

1. Voz Pasiva - Presente Simple (repaso)
Passive Voice - Simple Present (revision)
○ ej.: The study is funded by the United Nations.
○ ej.: The data were checked yesterday.

The first two words that come to mind to describe the theme of the Book for the
Electronic Arts are ‘transformation’ and ‘technology’, whereas the book is about
art. With paintings it is not unusual to speak admiringly of the artist’s technique.
However, when an artist exhibits only the technology and the audience has to
operate machines to call the art into existence the concept of ‘technology’
suddenly becomes an issue. Why would a technological installation be art? This
technological art is not about beautifully designed devices; it is the technological
functioning of the machinery itself that moves us esthetically. You literally see
only technology – until you overcome your diffidence and you step in, join in,
play along: then another realm of experience opens up to you. But even there the
technological aspect of this art is not disguised: in electronic art you are always
aware that it is technology that gives you the experience, just like you know it is
you who makes art out of technology.
No one will deny that in the 20th century technology has improved the world
beyond repair. Our daily life is electrically lighted and rearranged around
washing machines, televisions, personal computers and cars. Our bodies have
been invaded by surgery and drugs. All living creatures have been reduced to an

The company's creations have received numerous prizes and distinctions,
including three Drama Desk Awards and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.
1979–1983: Origins
In 1979, after having quit college and learned the art of fire breathing, Guy
Laliberté organized a summer fair in Baie-Saint-Paul with the help of Daniel
Gauthier and Gilles Ste-Croix. As part of a publicity stunt to convince the Quebec
government to help fund this production, Ste-Croix walked the 56 miles (90 km)
from Baie-Saint-Paul to Quebec City on stilts. This gave them funding for the
stilt-walking troupe Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul, which then toured
Quebec the following year in 1980. Although well received by audiences and
critics alike, Les Échassiers was a financial failure. Laliberté spent the following
winter in Hawaii while Ste-Croix stayed in Quebec to set up a nonprofit holding
company named "The High-Heeled Club" (Club des Talons Hauts) to mitigate
the losses of the previous summer. This allowed Les Échassiers de
Baie-Saint-Paul to break even by fall 1981. The following summer, Laliberté and
Ste-Croix founded La Fête Foraine, a street performance festival that featured
circus performances and workshops to teach the circus arts to the public.
Laliberté managed and produced the fair for 2 more years, becoming a moderate
financial success.
In 1983, the government of Quebec gave him a $1.6 million grant to host a
production the following year as part of Quebec's 450th anniversary
celebration of the French explorer Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada.
This became Cirque du Soleil's first production Le Grand Tour du Cirque du
Soleil.

Vedran Smailovic lived near the shop. When he heard the news, he was so sad
that he decided to do something about it. He was a musician and he didn't find a
better answer to this tragedy than playing his cello, most notably performing
Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor, one of the saddest pieces of music. For twenty-two
days, he put on his concert clothes, took his plastic chair to the ruined square of
the downtown Sarajevo marketplace, and started playing music at exactly four
o'clock in the afternoon. He was often under the threat of snipers and shells, but
fortunately, he was never hurt. His bravery inspired musical numbers and a
novel. For example, in his honor, composer David Wilde wrote a piece for solo
cello, The Cellist of Sarajevo, which was recorded by Yo Yo Ma. Canadian author
Elizabeth Wellburn also worked with Smailovic to create the children's book
Echoes from the Square (1998). Another Canadian author, Steven Galloway,
based a character on Smailovic in his bestselling 2008 novel, The Cellist of
Sarajevo.
