(clases 1 a 6).
alumnos regulares.

The philosophy behind its establishment is to stop wars between countries, and to provide
a platform for dialogue. The members of the UN consist of 193 member states, including
every internationally recognized sovereign state in the world but Vatican City. The UN is
headed by a Secretary-General.
Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the
World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The United
Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) delivers supplies to refugee camps, such as tent
insulation and flooring.
The United Nations Headquarters resides in international territory in New York City, with
further main offices at Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna. The organization is financed from
assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states, and has six official
languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

19

…I will buy a car./…compraré un auto.

Ancient Egypt
Intermediate Periods:
The success of ancient Egyptian civilization came partly from its ability to adapt
to the conditions of the Nile River valley for agriculture. The predictable
flooding and controlled irrigation of the fertile valley produced surplus crops,
which supported a more dense population, and social development and culture.
The development of ancient Egypt was also due to a very advanced system of
administration. The contributions of ancient Egypt include:

Listen actively. Work through how you feel, what the specific problem is and
what impact it is having on you. Use I -based statements to help do this (see
formula below).
35
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Ciencias Sociales
● I would like (what you want the person to do in the future to prevent the
problem)
Analyze the conflict. This will help clarify the specific problem. Some
questions that you may ask are:
Model neutral language. When people are in conflict they use inflammatory
language such as profanity, name calling, and exaggerations that escalate the
conflict. Restate inflammatory language in a more objective way to help make
the information less emotionally laden and more useful for future discussions.
Separate the person from the problem. View the problem as a specific
behavior or set of circumstances rather than attributing negative feelings to the
whole person. This approach makes the problem more manageable and hopeful
than deciding you “can’t stand” this person any longer.
Work together. This requires that each person stop placing blame and take
ownership of the problem. Make a commitment to work together and listen to
each other to solve the conflict.
Agree to disagree. Each person has a unique point of view and rarely agrees
on every detail. Being right is not what is important. When managing conflict,
seeking the “truth” can trap you rather than set you free. For example, consider
the differing testimony of witnesses that all see the same car accident. Truth is
relative to the person’s point of view.
Focus on the future. In conflict we tend to remember every single thing that
ever bothered us about that person. People in conflict need to vent about the past
but they often dwell on the past. Often the best way to take ownership of the
36
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Ciencias Sociales
problem is to recognize that regardless of the past, you need to create a plan to
address the present conflict and those that may arise in the future.
Share your interests. To solve interpersonal conflict, all parties must talk
about their interests or the WHYs behind their positions. They must share their
true interests and work together to find a solution that satisfies those interests.
Common interests for students are to sleep, study, entertain and relax in a
comfortable atmosphere. Often their interests are more intangible such as
respect, belonging, friendship, and fun. When individuals have differing
lifestyles, values, and schedules the need to discuss their differences is critical in
managing conflict. You must develop a balanced plan of give and take that
satisfies everyone’s interests.
Be specific. When problem solving be very specific. For example if you are
using a roommate agreement to facilitate the discussion make sure that
everyone fully understands each point that is written down. Clarify ambiguous
terms that each person may interpret differently.

Present Continuous

● mencionar acciones y proyectos temporarios del presente (Will is working remotely this
year.
● referirse a acciones futuras planificadas (We're having a staff meeting next Monday. /

● modificar adjetivos
She is really good.
Ella es realmente buena.

Historia de la Esclavitud
History of slavery
The history of slavery stretches across so
many cultures, nationalities, and
religions from ancient times to modern
times. The emergence of slavery is
unclear, but it is believed that this
practice was not common among
primitives since it normally develops
under conditions of social stratification.
As civilizations evolved, organized cities
and farms (as in Sumeria and Mesopotamia) were developed and the need for
slaves appeared. The first evidence of the practice comes from the
Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi (c. 1860 BCE), which refers to it as an
established institution. The practice then spread in the ancient world, in Greece
and other parts of the world. Later, slavery became common within much of
Europe during the Dark Ages and it continued into the Middle Ages. The
Byzantine-Ottoman wars (1265-1479) and the Ottoman wars in Europe (14th to
20th centuries) resulted in the capture of large numbers of Christian slaves. The
Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, British, Arabs and several West African
kingdoms played a prominent role in the Atlantic slave trade. This trade, also
known as the transatlantic slave trade, involved the transportation by slave
traders of enslaved African people, mainly to the Americas, whose economies
were particularly dependent on the supply of slave labor for the production of
commodity crops, making goods and clothing to sell in Europe. This was
crucial to those Western European countries which, in the late 17th and 18th
centuries, were vying with each other to create overseas empires.
Abolition of slavery
Some of the first countries to abolish slavery as a practice in their lands were
Western European although they depended largely on slavery to build their

empires abroad. Later, in spite of the abolition of slavery globally, slaves still
existed in the Americas. It was only later that slavery abolition groups
managed to stop the practice in countries such as the United States. When
Abraham Lincoln won the presidency and called for the abolition of slavery, the
Southern states seceded from the Union and tried to defend the practice. The
Northern Union, however, fought to preserve the country and put an end to
slavery. A turning point in the Civil War was President Lincoln's signing of the
Emancipation Proclamation, altering the status of all enslaved Americans
from bondage to freedom. This led many slaves to escape from the Southern
states to regain their legal freedom in the North. When the Union regained
control of the Southern Confederate States, the slaves in those areas were
formally freed. It is sad to note that even though these slaves became legally
free, their lives did not improve and the struggle for racial equality is still on the
agenda of the Civil Rights movements.

1. Frases Nominales
Noun Phrases

If you’re having trouble learning a new language, consider the story of Genie
Wiley.
As a 13-year-old girl, Genie couldn’t speak a word in any language, because her
father had kept her in a crib in a locked bedroom, never speaking to her. Even as
an adult she never developed more than a child’s level of speaking, despite much
work with psychologists and language specialists.
Working with Genie in the 1970s made linguists rethink language development
in early childhood. They theorized that there is a “critical period” in early
childhood in which a child must learn language. After that, it would be very
61
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Ciencias Sociales
difficult for someone to become fluent in a language. Many researchers apply the
same idea to second language learning.
The short answer: Yes. The long answer: It’s not that simple. In general we
assume that children learn languages faster than adults, but research shows
that kids and adults just learn differently.
How do children best learn language?
In early childhood, children have yet to acquire the thinking skills that allow
them to memorize complex grammatical structures. So young second language
learners generally develop grammar by making mistakes and learning from
them.
“The more mistakes you make, the faster you become a confident language
learner.”
Because they must communicate to get their needs taken care of, children
generally prefer to get their point across instead of speaking with perfect
grammar. Thus they are more willing to make mistakes, says a 1976 study
from Harvard University. Likewise, since they have a strong need to
communicate, children usually gain vocabulary faster than adults, and they
tend to remember it longer.
Using thinking skills and patterns from their first language, adults can often
learn the grammar of a second language more quickly than children. This is
why high school and college classes teach verb patterns at a faster pace than
primary schools.
However, because adults tend to learn better with repetitive grammatical
instruction, they experience difficulty in language immersions. Their fluency in a
first language can make adults reluctant to communicate imperfectly in their
second language.

“Truth is, nothing comes by itself. You need to motivate yourself, create a
system, and stick to your plan as much as possible. There is always work
at play.”
At best, research on age-based language abilities can help teachers and students
plan lessons that target their natural strengths. What research can’t do is tell us
which age group will be more successful using a new language.

Airborne troops were dropped behind enemy lines in the early hours, while
thousands of ships gathered off the Normandy coast for the main attack.
Though they were expecting an invasion, German military leaders believed the
initial attacks were only a diversionary tactic.
A deception plan in the weeks ahead of the attack had led them to expect the
main invasion further along the coast.
The surprise element helped British troops establish a foothold on a beach
codenamed Gold.
In addition, Canadian forces established themselves on another beach - Juno -
and the British got on to Sword beach.
American soldiers also managed to land on the westernmost beach - Utah -
without major casualties.
But at nearby Omaha beach, the US force suffered serious losses. The naval
barrage and bombing raids on the German defences were ineffective and the
Americans encountered a crack division of German troops.

Shortly after midnight, three US and British airborne divisions, more than
23,000 men, took off to secure the flanks of the beaches. Myriad naval vessels
and landing craft gathered at a location in the Channel dubbed "Piccadilly
Circus".

From 06:30, the first five assault divisions were delivered to their beaches under
cover of a naval bombardment.
Throughout the day troops landed on the beaches. By midnight, the Allies had
secured their beachheads and pushed further inland from Gold, Juno, Sword
and Utah.

Although they had got a foothold in France by the end of D-Day, allied forces
were for a while at risk of being pushed back into the sea.
They had to keep building up their forces faster than the Germans could
reinforce theirs.
Progress through the narrow lanes and staunchly defended towns of Normandy
was slow.
But now outnumbering their enemy and supported by their air superiority, they
were able to overcome the considerable resistance - though at a heavy price.
By the time they liberated Paris, in late August 1944, about 10% of the two
million allied troops who had by then reached France were dead, wounded or
missing.

Superlatives

Taking a test.
What does a test in school measure? Does it measure your knowledge of the
subject matter? Does it measure the effort you put into preparing for the test?
Does it measure how well you cope with the stress of taking the test? Does it
measure how well the teacher prepared you for the test?
Some experts say tests have become too important. The federal government
evaluates schools on the results of tests. The No Child Left Behind program put
96
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Ciencias Sociales
the spotlight on teachers. If the kids did not do well it was bad for the teacher
and the school.
After blaming the teachers and the schools, it became “blame the test”. For
example, a test to get into high-achieving high schools in New York City created
trouble. Few black and Hispanic kids passed the test. Asian kids did the best and
white kids second best.
The outcry was to change the test so more black and Hispanic youngsters got in.
Asian and white parents protested. So far, the test is still in place.
Others focus on helping students view testing in a more upbeat light. First,
interrupt the way students feel about tests. Anxiety about a test comes from
knowing a test evaluates you. Experts say it is best to fit tests into your normal
life. Sleep and good nutrition prepare the brain for tests.
One expert talked about a 30 day treatment to reduce stress. It is an easy way to
reduce stress. She said, “Notice where you feel it in your body. Imagine you are
gathering that up when you inhale, and then part your lips and blow it away. You
have to breathe anyway; you might as well do it deeply.”
Think about the way test results are used. An expert said, “They are just a
snapshot, ideally used to inform.”
And then, they talk about anxiety. According to what patients have learnt from
the outpatient rehab treatment, worrying too much is likely to make tests more
difficult. An expert said, “Try to understand that anxiety is your body trying to
help you.” The goal is managing stress and not simply reducing it.
What if you do not test well? It may keep you from achieving a goal. Or it may
not matter. Getting a degree may be the most important thing. Doing what you
do well may be the bigger test.
In general, people are evaluating us during most of our lives. We are used to it.
We are here because our ancestors were successful in dealing with the stress of
their lives.

In 2017, she began her studies at Oxford University and the following year
returned to visit her native country for the first time since she had left. Here are
some of Malala Yousafzai’s inspiring words:
On education: "I have the right of education. I have the right to play. I have the
right to sing. I have the right to talk. I have the right to go to the market. I have
the right to speak up.”
On being shot: “Dear friends, on 9 October 2012, the Taliban shot me on the
left side of my forehead. They shot my friends, too. They thought that the bullets
would silence us, but they failed. And out of that silence came thousands of
voices. The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my
ambitions. But nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and
hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born. I am the same Malala.
My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same.”
On illiteracy: “So let us wage a glorious struggle against illiteracy, poverty and
terrorism, let us pick up our books and our pens, they are the most powerful
weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.”
On peace: “Dear sisters and brothers, the so-called world of adults may
understand it, but we children don’t. Why is it that countries which we call
'strong' are so powerful in creating wars but are so weak in bringing peace? Why
is it that giving guns is so easy but giving books is so hard? Why is it, why is it
that making tanks is so easy, but building schools is so hard?”
On her story: “I often say that I tell my story not because it is unique, but
because it is the story of many girls. I think realizing that you’re not alone, that
you are standing with millions of your sisters around the world is vital.”
On making a difference: “Often, we think we are too young, or our ideas may
not work, and we need to grow up to bring change. I just say no. Whatever you
want to do now, you can do it now.”
108
Cátedra de Inglés - Inglés II - Ciencias Sociales

Virtual classrooms, video, augmented reality (AR), robots, and other technology
tools can not only make class more lively, they can also create more inclusive
learning environments that foster collaboration and inquisitiveness and enable
teachers to collect data on student performance.
Still, it’s important to note that technology is a tool used in education and not an
end in itself. The promise of educational technology lies in what educators do
with it and how it is used to best support their students’ needs.
Educational technology can foster collaboration. Not only can teachers engage
with students during lessons, but students can also communicate with each
other. Through online lessons and learning games, students get to work together
to solve problems. In collaborative activities, students can share their thoughts
and ideas and support each other. At the same time, technology enables
one-on-one interaction with teachers. Students can ask classroom-related
questions and seek additional help on difficult-to-understand subject matter. At
home, students can upload their homework, and teachers can access and view
completed assignments using their laptops.
Technology allows 24/7 access to educational resources. Classes can take place
entirely online via the use of a laptop or mobile device. Hybrid versions of
learning combine the use of technology from anywhere with regular in-person
classroom sessions. In both scenarios, the use of technology to tailor learning

plans for each student is possible. Teachers can create lots of lessons based on
student interests and strengths. An added benefit is that students can learn at
their own pace. When they need to review class material to get a better
understanding of essential concepts, students can review videos in the lesson
plan. The data generated through these online activities enable teachers to see
which students struggled with certain subjects and offer additional assistance
and support.

Past Continuous

am/is/are sleeping
was/were sleeping
Vemos entonces que el pasado continuo combina el verbo estar en pasado (was/were) con el
verbo +ing.
Ej: Willy was doing an experiment when he received the email from NASA.
Afirmativo:
