preposiciones — above, over, under, below & beneath

En esta lección vamos a aprender un grupo especial de preposiciones de lugar en inglés —above, over, below, under & beneath.
Vamos a ver el uso y significado de todas ellas, tanto su sentido real y físico como su sentido abstracto.
Sin embargo, como introducción nos viene muy bien saber que en inglés se diferencian las preposiciones que tocan algo de preposiciones que no lo
tocan. Aunque algunas de estas preposiciones pueden expresar ambos sentidos.

Ambas pueden significar por encima de y, en general, son sinónimos.

The balloon is over / above our heads

El globo está por encima de nuestras cabezas
 The plane was flying over / above the town
El avión estuvo volando por encima de la ciudad

Sin embargo, a veces, hay ligeras diferencias de significado.

1 Además, over también significa sobre / encima de —igual que on—, es decir, tocando. Este significado no lo tiene above, que siempre es por encima de,
sin tocar.

I put a blanket over / on the bed

Puse una manta encima / sobre la cama
2 Over también puede expresar más de y también a través de, por allí, de un lado al otro.

The village is over there

El pueblo está por allí
I left it over here
Lo dejé por aquí
The bridge over the river was built in the 15th century

3 La expresión be over —estar acabado o terminado— no es lo mismo que be above —estar por encima de.

below & under

Ambas significan por debajo de, más bajo que y en muchas ocasiones son intercambiables.
Sin embargo, under suele dar una idea de contacto, de que las cosas se están tocando, mientras que below expresa que hay un espacio entre ellas.

beneath

Significa por debajo de, en un sentido abstracto.

En la Inglaterra victoriana era muy raro casarse por debajo de tu clase social

Esto está por debajo de mi dignidad
Beneath se puede usar en sentido físico, real, aunque es menos común. Lo más normal sería utilizar under.

There is a secret tunnel beneath / under this castle

Hay un túnel secreto debajo del castillo
There are many Greek remains beneath / under the city
Hay muchas ruinas griegas por debajo de la ciudad

above & under

También se usan para expresar jerarquía, para expresar que una persona está por encima o por debajo de otra en una empresa, organización…

He is above me
Él es mi superior

He is under me
Yo soy su superior (él es mi subordinado)
