We usually use a past time expression (like last Monday, Two days ago, In 2007, etc.)
b- The Past Perfect Tense refers to a past action before another past action.
Example: We had finished our work when our boss called us.
Both actions are past. First, we finished the work. Then, our boss called us.
Example: John had never been to London before we went there last year.
c- The Past Progressive Tense indicates duration. If we want to make it clear that the activity
had certain duration in the past, we use this tense.
Example: What were you doing at 9:00 yesterday? I was cooking dinner.
Both actions are past. We show that the action was taking place (sucediendo) at that specific
time, it was “in progress” at 9:00.

READING: AN ARTICLE
The idea that aliens might have visited the Earth many
years ago first became popular when Chariots of the Gods?
was published in English. The author, Erich von Daniken,
claims spaceships were observed in Mesopotamia
thousands of years ago and the aliens revealed the secrets of metal making, agriculture
and written language to man. In support of his theories, von Daniken points out that the
mythologies of almost every culture include tales of winged animals and flying machines
and how some ancient drawings look similar to modern astronauts. He also argues that
many ancient achievements and mysteries, from the building of the pyramids in Egypt, to
the detailed maps of ancient sailors, were only possible with the help of these ancient
space travellers.
Von Daniken´s theories have been attacked by many scholars. For example, they argue that
techniques used in the construction of the pyramids are now well-known. His
interpretation of early drawings has also been attacked. Would ancient space travellers
really have looked like modern astronauts? However, lots of people have similar beliefs to
von Daniken. After all, with so many unknown galaxies and stars, it is reasonable to
assume that we are not alone, isn´t it?

These are examples from the text “Drugs and Sports” (From Guía de Estudio de 5º año, unidad
1):
In sentence A, the focus of attention is “athletes”. It´s the subject of the sentence. The sentence
is about what athletes do. In sentence B, the subject, and the focus of attention, is “drugs”. The
sentence is about drugs, not about athletes.
Sometimes it’s necessary to talk about an event and not who caused it or who did the action.
Ok. There are two verbs here: “are” and “used”. The first verb is the verb “to be”, it is in the
Simple Present Tense. The second verb is the verb “use”.
The verb “to be” indicates “tense” (tiempo verbal: presente, pasado, futuro). In
this case, “are” indicates present time, because it is a present form.
Together, both verbs (“are” + “used”) refer to the event and not to who did it or who caused it.
Which is the subject of the verb “are used”?

Atheletes
(El sujeto de la oración no es el que realmente realiza la acción de “usar”. Por lo tanto, este
sujeto no “hace nada”, es un sujeto “pasivo”.)
This construction is The Passive. The sentence is in the present tense, so, this is the Present
Passive.
In the Passive we always use the verb “to be” and a past participle form. If we speak in the
present, the verb “to be” is in the present (am/is/are), if we speak in the past, the verb “to
be” is in the past (was/were). The main verb is always a past participle.
Can you find a verb in the present passive in the text “We are not alone”?
Yes!
“(...) they argue that techniques used in the construction of the pyramids are
now well-known.”

The mother arrives home from work and sees that the cookies´ jar is broken:
In the dialogue above, we can see that the child is afraid of his mother´s reaction
to him, because she loved that jar. He thinks she will punish him. So, he wants to
avoid responsibility and says: “It was broken” (“se rompió”) instead of (en vez de)
“I broke it”.
Can you find a verb in the past passive in the text “We are not alone”?
“Earth many years ago first became popular when Chariots of the Gods? was

About ketchup

Materia: “Inglés”
Unidad Didáctica 2
Applying for a job
I can’t imagine a more American meal than a burger and fries, and
I can’t imagine a burger and fries without ketchup. Maybe that’s
why I always thought of ketchup as the all-American condiment.
The first ketchup was probably made in China about 350 years ago.
This “ketsiap” was made of fish and shellfish. It did not contain
tomatoes. It became very popular and it was introduced into
Malaysia and then Singapore, where it was known as “kechap”. In
the early 18th century, it was sold to English merchant sailors, who
took it to Britain. Because the British cooks did not have all the ingredients, some of
the Eastern ingredients were replaced. The new sauce was called “ketchup”. Later,
many alternative ingredients were tried, including lemons, walnuts, anchovies …
and, eventually, tomatoes.
Tomato ketchup was introduced into America by English settlers, who called it
“catsup”. The first commercial bottle of ketchup was produced in 1876 by Henry
Heinz. Ten years later, Heinz Tomato Ketchup was first exported to Britain.
Heinz used ripe tomatoes, increased the proportion of vinegar in the recipe
dramatically, added sugar, and flavored it with onion and a special blend of spices.
The result was an extremely viscous condiment that included all the major taste
components—salty, bitter, sweet, sour, and umami (or savory). This winning
combination soon became the American definition of ketchup; although competitors’
recipes differ in the details, the public no longer accepts anything as “ketchup” that
doesn’t fit the pattern of a thick, tangy, tomato-based sauce.
In the text, there are many sentences that speak about the sauce, ketchup. For example, in the
sentence:
“The first ketchup was probably made in China about 350 years ago”,
the important information is about the product, not about who made it. Then, the verb is in the
past passive: “was made”. Check the underlined verbs in the text above:
Activity 17: Complete the text with the correct forms of the verbs, active or passive:
The first sandwich (1) ______________ (make) by John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich,
in 1762. He (2) ______________ (use to - play) cards games for a long time and
one day he (3) ______________ (refuse) to stop playing in order to eat. So, his
cook (4) ______________ (prepare) a quick meal putting a piece of meat between
