The general rule for forming possessives

The possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding an apostrophe and s, whether the
singular noun ends in s or not.
Example:
 The lawyer’s fee  Tom Jones’s first album
 The child’s toy  Luis’s friends
 The girl’s parents  JFK’s finest speech
 Xerox’s sales manager  Texas’s oil industry
 A week’s vacation

11
The possessive of a plural noun is formed by adding only an apostrophe when the noun
ends in s, and by adding both an apostrophe and s when it ends in a letter other than s.
Example:
 excessive lawyers’ fees  the Joneses’ vacation house
 children’s toys  the boys’ baseball team
 the twins’ parents  the alumni’s fundraising
 the student teachers’ supervisor  three weeks’ vacation
 the Smiths’ vacation house  someone with twelve years’
experience

Exceptions to the general rule

Use only an apostrophe for singular nouns that are in the form of a plural—or have a final
word in the form of a plural—ending with an s.
Example:
 Beverly Hills’ current mayor
 the United States’ lingering debt problem
 Cisco Systems’ CEO
 the Beatles’ first album

READING
Read the following text and answer the questions.

Kingsville

Hi! My name is Brianda and I live in Kingsville. It´s a beautiful place, but it´s not very big.
About 8,000 people live here. In Kingsville there are about thirty shops and there are three
big shopping malls. You can buy almost everything in there. There are four banks and two
libraries on Main Street. There´s a coffee shop in front of the town hall too.
My favorite pizza shop is on the corner of Oak Street. I like this place because they have
different kind of pizzas. They´re really delicious! Near my house there´s also a market
where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products.
There are three churches downtown and there is a park too. In the park children can play
because there is a playground area. In Kingsville there are interesting places where you can
go with your family or friends, for example there is a theater and a museum. But
unfortunately, there isn´t an aquarium or a football stadium. I love living in my town
because it is a calm place and people are friendly.

Verb Conjugation & Spelling

However, the spelling for the verb in the third person (he, She, It) differs depending on

 go – goes

Negative Sentences in the Simple Present Tense:

We use the present simple, in its negative form, to deny situations that regularly, repeatedly
or always occur.

To make a negative sentence in simple present we use the auxiliary verb do + not ( don´t)
when the subject is I, you or we and the auxiliary verb does + not (doesn't) when the
subject is he, she or it.

Subject don't/ doesn't Verb* The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they don't have / buy
cereal for breakfast
he / she / it doesn't eat / like

* Verb: Notice that the base form of the verb is the same (without any changes).

Negative Contractions
Don't = Do not I don't like meat = I do not like meat.
Doesn't = Does not he doesn´t like meat= he does not like
meat.

With contractions there is no difference in meaning though we normally use them in spoken
English.

Interrogative sentences in the Simple Present Tense

repeatedly or always occur.

To make a interrogative sentence we use  Do or Does at the beginning of the question. we

use the auxiliary verb DO when the subject is I, you or we and the auxiliary verb DOES
when the subject is he, she or it.

Note: Do or does has no translation in Spanish though it is essential to show we are making
a question.

Do/ The Rest of the

The time

What time is it?

52
Taken from: https://www.vocabulary.cl/Basic/Telling_Time.htm

There are different ways of telling the time.

1. We say the expression o'clock when there are NO minutes.

Example: what time is it?

It´s 10:00 - It's ten o'clock

It´s 5:00 - It's five o'clock
It´s 1:00 - It's one o'clock Sometimes it is written the number + o'clock (9 o'clock)

For 12:00 there are four expressions in English. ( o´clock/ midday/ noon/ midnight)

Example: What time is it?

It´s 12: 00 ( It´s twelve o'clock)

It´s 12:00 p.m. ( It´s midday)
It´s 12: 00 p.m. ( It´s noon)
It´s 12:00 a.m. (It´s midnight )

2. We say the hour first and then the minutes. (Hour + Minutes)

Example: What time is it?

It´s 6:25 ( It's six twenty-five)

It´s 8: 05 ( It's eight O-five) (the O is said like the letter O)
It´s 9:11 ( It's nine eleven)
It´s 5: 30 (It´s five thirty / It´s five and a half)

3.Say the minutes first and then the hour.  (Minutes + PAST/ AFTER/ TO + Hour)

For minutes 1-30 we use PAST/AFTER after the minutes.

Example: What time is it?

It´s 6:25 ( It's twenty-five past/ after six)

It´s 8: 05 ( It's O-five past/after eight)
It´s 9:11 ( It's eleven past/after nine)
It´s 5: 30 (It´s thirty past/after five / It´s and a half past/after five)
It´s 7:15 – (It's (a) quarter past /after seven

 When it is 30 minutes past the hour we normally say: (a) half past

 When it is 15 minutes past/after the hour we normally say: (a) quarter past

For minutes 31-59 we use TO after the minutes.

Example: What time is it?

53
It´s 7: 40 ( It´s twenty TO eight)
It´s 9:50 (It´s ten TO ten)
It´s 4:45 ( It´s fifteen TO five/ It´s (a) quarter TO five)

when it is 15 minutes before the hour we normally say: a quarter to

Asking for the Time

The common question forms we use to ask for the time right now are:

 What time is it? Or What is the time?

A more polite way to ask for the time, especially from a stranger is:

 Can/ Could you tell me the time, please?

The common question forms we use to ask at what time a specific event are:

What time do you usually go to bed on Fridays?

Giving the Time

We use the structure AT + time when giving the time of a specific event.

 The bus arrives at midday (12:00).

 The flight leaves at a quarter to two (1:45).
 The concert begins at ten o'clock. (10:00)

We use the structure AT AROUND/ AT ABOUT+ time when giving the time of a non-specific
event.

 I go to bed (at) around 11:00 p.m.

AM vs. PM
We don't normally use the 24-hour clock in English.

We use a.m. (am) for the morning and p.m. (pm) for the afternoon and night.

 3am = Three o'clock in the morning.

 3pm = Three o'clock in the afternoon.

I. Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.
TIM’S DAY
Tim works for a company in Sacramento, California. He's a customer service
representative. He always gets up at six o'clock each workday. He usually drives to work
and begins his job at eight o'clock. He speaks to people on the telephone to help them with
their banking problems. People telephone the bank to ask questions about their accounts.
He doesn't give information about accounts until people answer a few questions.
Tim asks callers their birth date, the last four digits of
their social security number and their address. If a
person gives incorrect information, Tim asks him to
call back with the correct information. Tim is polite
and friendly with everyone. He usually has lunch in a
park next to his office. He often returns home at five
o'clock in the evening. After work, he goes to the gym
to work out. He has dinner at seven o'clock. Tim likes
watching TV after dinner. He goes to bed at eleven

words (nouns) in a sentence in order to add emphasis, explanation, or detail.

There are two types of adjectives

Opinion adjectives. They tell us what somebody thinks of something or somebody, such
as : nice, beautiful or delicious, etc.
Example: In spring I always wear nice shorts
And
Fact adjectives. They give us factual information about something or somebody, such
as: age, size, color, etc. ( new, large, wooden, etc,)

we must double the last consonant and then add -ing:

enjoy - enjoying
study -studying

5.When words have two or more syllables ending in CVC, you must double the last
consonant if the last syllable is stressed. When the last syllable is NOT stressed, just
add -ing.

He prefers not to wear a tie to work.

These two options are correct, there is a small difference between their meanings, however.
Note: In American English, the forms with to-infinitive are much more common than the –
ing form.

The ing form- We can use it to put an emphasis on the experience or action and to suggest

enjoyment or lack of it.

To-infinitive - We can use  it to give more emphasis to the results of the action or event
and to express habits or preferences

I like making coffee.
ING FORM is used to emphasise the action
He likes telling jokes.

Object pronouns:
Object pronouns are used instead of nouns, usually because we already know what the
object is.
It makes the sentence easier to read and understand and avoids repetition. We normally use
object pronouns after a verb or a preposition.

79
OBJECT PRONOUNS

Subject Pronoun Object Pronoun

I Me
You You
He Him
She Her
It It
We Us
You (plural) You
They Them

The Object Pronoun – it:

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that
it has meaning. It needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you
are referring to. Compare;

 You are sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers
to).
 The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence
that the reference is to the letter).

I. Which object form of the object pronoun can substitute the underlined phrase in
the sentence?
1) The teacher always gives the students homework.
a) me b) them c) you
2) I´m reading the book to my little sister.
a) him b) me c) her
3) The boys are riding their bikes.

Hello! My name is Bob and I live in a very quiet and

silent neighborhood where there are many big houses
and some apartment buildings, the streets are clean and
spacious, near my house there are some public parks,
and there is a university too. Across from the university
there is a gym.

In my neighborhood some houses are really beautiful

and have swimming pools, but my house doesn’t have
one. It has two floors-a first floor and a second floor.

It has also an attic and a basement. On the first floor there is the hall, the kitchen, the living
room, a big dining room and a toilet. On the second floor there are three bedrooms, one
bathroom and a big corridor. My bedroom is between my parents’ bedroom and the
bathroom. My sister´s bedroom is in front of mine. My favorite place in the house is my
bedroom because I can do a lot of things there but also I like the attic. In the attic I have
some books and my old toys and I love spending time in there in summer because it is very
fresh and there is a comfortable sofa there where I sometimes take a nap.

In the basement is where we have the washing machine, the drying machine and old stuff.
In front of the house there is also a garage, where my parents park the family car and a
lovely garden with many green spaces and colorful flowers.

Triathlon

It is a sport that consists of three parts, swimming, cycling

and running. Athletes swim first, cycle second and run
last. Triathlon is an Olympic Sport. In the Olympics,
athletes swim for 1.5 km, cycle for 40 km and then run for
10 km. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China the
women’s gold medal was for Emma Snowsill, an
Australian athlete. Emma enjoys participating in triathlons
and practicing different sports: swimming, tennis, basketball, ballet and skiing. She is 34
years old and is married with the triathlete Jon Frodeno. He is the gold medal winner in
men's triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the winner of the 2015 Ironman
World Championship and the winner of the 2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

A popular triathlon is the Sprint Triathlon. It is half the distance of the triathlon of the
Olympics. In this event athletes swim for 750 metres, cycle for 20 km and run for 5 km. If
you think that this is too short for you, you can try the Ironman Triathlon. In the Ironman
competition athletes swim for 3.86 km, cycle for 180 km and then run for 42.2 km! The
fastest athletes can finish an Ironman Triathlon in just eight hours!
