Dentro de la diversidad de objetos cerámicos producidos
por los grupos precolombinos, los sellos, son quizás, los
menos conocidos y estudiados; no obstante, tienen gran
importancia en cuanto a su valor cultural y estético.
La manufactura de sellos o pintaderas, como también se
les conoce, forma parte del trabajo cerámico de los grupos
precolombinos los cuales los utilizaron para estampar
diseños. Estos sellos tienen diferentes tamaños y pueden
tener forma cilíndrica o plana. Los diseños más comunes son,
triángulos, rombos, círculos, espirales, figuras concéntricas,
representaciones de la figura humana y de animales.
Las superficies utilizadas para estampar estos diseños no se
conocen pues no ha quedado registro de ellas en el
material arqueológico; sin embargo, se puede decir que
básicamente, se utilizaron para la decoración corporal. Esta
idea se fundamenta en el hecho de que existen figuras
humanas elaboradas en cerámica que presentan los
cuerpos adornados con diseños semejantes a los de los
sellos. Además esta teoría se apoya en unas pocas
referencias escritas dejadas por que los cronistas del siglo
XVl, en las cuales se describen las prácticas de decoración
corporal, así como en el hecho de que todavía existen
grupos indígenas que practican la decoración corporal, tal
es el caso de los Embera que habitan en Panamá y Colombia.
El empleo de los sellos para estampar diseños forma parte
de la tradición precolombina de utilizar elementos gráficos
para comunicar ideas y conceptos que tienen que ver con
sus creencias simbólicas y con sus prácticas rituales, así
como distinguir las condiciones sociales o la pertenencia a
un grupo de las personas.

The manufacture of stamps is part of the ceramic
work of pre-Columbian groups, who used them
to imprint designs. These stamps have different
sizes and they can have a cylindrical or flat shape.
The most common designs are triangles,
diamonds, circles, spirals, concentric figures and
animal and human figure representations.
The surfaces that were used for stamping those
designs are not known, since there has been no
record of archaeological materials. Nevertheless,
one can say that they were basically used for
corporal decoration. This idea is based on the
fact that there are ceramic human figures that
represent the decorated bodies with designs
that are similar to those found on the stamps.
In addition, this theory is supported by written
reference made by the chroniclers of the XVI
century, describing the practices of body
decoration, as well as the fact that there are, to
this date, indigenous groups that practice
corporal decoration, as is the case of the Embera,
who live in Panama and Colombia.
The use of these stamps is part of the pre-
Columbian tradition of using graphic elements
for communicating ideas and concepts that
have to do with their symbolic beliefs and
with their ritual practices, as well as for
distinguishing social conditions and the sense
of belonging to a group of people.

 El contexto arqueológico
Los sellos aparecen en varias culturas prehispánicas que se
desarrollaron en los actuales territorios de México, las
Antillas, Colombia, Venezuela y Ecuador. Como ya se dijo,
fueron utilizados, principalmente, para la decoración
corporal, aunque no se descarta su uso en otras superficies
como madera y fibras vegetales.
En Costa Rica, han aparecido sobre todo en el Pacífico Norte
y la Región Central. Pocos ejemplares proceden de excavaciones
científicas los que se conocen han formado parte de las
ofrendas en los enterramientos y de los objetos presentes
dentro de las áreas habitacionales. La época de mayor
apogeo ha sido ubicada entre los años 100 a.C. y 800 d.C.,
pero no se descarta su continuidad hasta la época de contacto.
La poca información acerca de las superficies que fueron
decoradas con estos instrumentos, como de quiénes
podían haberlos utilizados y en qué ocasiones proviene de
otros objetos arqueológicos del período en que fueron
utilizados los sellos. En este sentido, si se supone que estos
objetos fueron empleados principalmente para decorar el
cuerpo humano, lo que se debe buscar es evidencia acerca
de quiénes pudieron hacerlo y con qué propósito.
The Archaeological Context
The stamps appear in several pre-Hispanic
cultures that developed in the territories that
are presently occupied by Mexico, the West
Indies, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. As
it has been previously stated, they were used
for body decoration, mainly, although their
use on other surfaces, such as wood and
vegetable fibers is not discarded.
In Costa Rica they have been found mainly in
the Northern Pacific and in the Central region.
Very few samples come from scientific excavations.
Those that are known, were part of burial
offerings and of objects found within living
areas.The period of greatest use has been
determined to be from 100 BC to 800 AD, but
its continuity into the contact period is not
eliminated.
The scant information there is in regard to the
surfaces that were decorated using these
instruments, as well as who might have used
them and in what occasions, comes from the
archaeological objects of periods in which the
stamps were used. In this sense, if one supposes
that these objects were used mainly for
decorating the human body, what has to be
sought is evidence of who might have done so
and for what purpose.

 Así, por ejemplo, en la región de Guanacaste, en el Pacífico
Norte, desde el año 100 d.C., aparece una serie de figuras
cerámicas, tanto masculinas como femeninas, que tienen
en la cara, hombros y muñecas decoraciones en negro y
blanco, lo que pareciera ser pintura sobre el cuerpo. Aunque
no existe una relación expresa con los sellos, lo importante
es rescatar la práctica de la decoración corporal en figuras
que parecen representar a individuos que participan en
rituales o que parecen ser retratos de dignatarios. Este tipo
de figuras se encuentran principalmente como ofrendas en
enterramientos de alto rango.
En esta misma región, en el tipo cerámico Galo Policromo
del período 500-800 d.C., se encontró una serie de figuras
femeninas que tienen localizados en el pecho, los hombros,
los brazos y los muslos motivos negros lineales, que
podrían ser considerados como impresiones hechas con
sellos, puesto que hay una similitud muy fuerte entre los
diseños de las figuras y los motivos presentes en los sellos
procedentes de esta región. Estas figuras femeninas,
adornadas con orejeras y peinados, se encuentran como
ofrendas funerarias y han sido consideradas como retratos
de mujeres adornadas para la participación en un evento
ceremonial, dada la seriedad y solemnidad de las
expresiones de sus rostros.
Más tardíamente, en las figuras femeninas de cerámica del
tipo Mora Policromo del 800-1200 d.C., se puede apreciar
la continuidad de la tradición de la decoración corporal; en
este caso, los diseños parecen representar impresiones
hechas con sellos en las zonas de la cara, hombros, brazos,
pechos y piernas.

Thus, for example, in the region of Guanacaste,
in the Northern Pacific, there is a series of
ceramic figures dated as far as the year 100
AD, both masculine and feminine, which have
on their faces, shoulders and wrists, black and
white decorations, which appear to be painting
on the body. Although there is no direct
relation to the stamps, the important thing
here would be to rescue the practice of body
decoration in figures that seem to represent
individuals who participate in rituals or that
appear to be portraits of dignitaries. These
types of figures are mainly found as offerings
in high-ranking burials.
In this same region, in the Galo-Polychrome
ceramic type of the 500-800 AD period, a
series of female figures were found that have
black linear designs on their chests, shoulders,
arms and thighs, which might be considered
impressions made with stamps, since there is
a very strong similarity between the designs in
the figures and the designs present in the
stamps located in this region. These female
figures, decorated with ear spools and headdresses,
are found as funeral offerings and they have
been considered portraits of adorned women
participating in a ceremonial event, due to the
seriousness and solemnity of the expressions
of their faces.
Later, in the female ceramic figures of the
Mora-Polychrome type from 800-1200 AD, one
can appreciate the continuity of the tradition of
body decoration; in this case, the designs appear
to represent impressions made with stamps on
the face, shoulders, arms, breasts and legs.

 Con los ejemplos anteriores, se puede suponer que para el
Pacífico Norte de Costa Rica la utilización de la decoración
corporal por medio de la pintura y del estampado con
sellos está relacionada esencialmente con figuras femeninas,
que representan mujeres en cargos políticos o en
actividades ceremoniales.
No se puede saber con certeza si la decoración con sellos
era de uso exclusivo de mujeres, lo que sí se puede decir es
que las representaciones de mujeres con decoración
similar a la de los sellos no son de gente común. Por otro
lado, el hecho de que las figuras y los sellos mismos hayan
aparecido como ofrenda funeraria indica que tanto el sello
como las impresiones hechas por ellos eran de importancia
social y simbólica.
Para la Región Central del país no se cuenta con suficientes
ejemplos de representaciones humanas en cerámica que
muestren decoración corporal; de las pocas que existen,
hay unas figuras femeninas del período 400-700 d.C. que
presentan decoraciones geométricas y figuras de animales
en color negro muy similares a la de los sellos encontrados
en esta región. Las representaciones con decoración
corporal tienden a ser más comunes a partir del 800 d.C.,
en figuras femeninas y masculinas hechas en piedra y que
presentan diseños en los hombros, brazos y piernas, las
cuales han sido consideradas como tatuajes.
El período comprendido entre el año 100 a.C. y el 500 d.C,
es una etapa de la historia precolombina en la cual la
actividad ritual es un componente importante en los
procesos de consolidación de sociedades cada vez más
jerarquizadas. La actividad ritual se puede evidenciar entre
otras cosas, por la gran variedad de objetos que se
producen, en los cuales se incluyen implementos como los
sonajeros, las pipas y las maracas; de este período es,
precisamente, de donde proceden la mayoría de los sellos
cerámicos de esta región, por lo que es factible que fueran
usados para decorar a los oficiantes o a los participantes en
los rituales.

With the preceding examples, one can suppose
that for the Northern Pacific of Costa Rica the use
of corporal decoration with paint and stamping is
essentially related to female figures, which
represent women who held political positions or
participated in ceremonial activities.
It is not known with certainty if the decoration
with stamps was an exclusive use of women.
What can be said is that the representations of
women with decorations similar to those of the
stamps are not of common people. On the other
hand, the fact that the figures and the stamps
have both appeared as funeral offerings indicates
that the they, as well as the impressions made by
them, were of social and symbolic relevance.
For the Central region of the country there are not
enough samples of human representations in
ceramic showing corporal decorations; of the very
few that exist, there are some female figures
dating from the period of 400-700 AD, which
have geometric and animal figure decorations of
a black color, very similar to the stamps found
in this region. Representations with body
decorations tend to be more common after the
year 800 AD, in female and male figures made
of stone with designs present on their shoulders,
arms and legs, which have come to be considered
as tattoos.
The period within the year 100 BC and 500 AD,
is a phase of pre-Columbian history, in which
the ritual activity is an important component
of the consolidation process of these societies
which were increasingly hierarchic. The ritual

very feasible that they were used for decorating

De la Región Central del país es de donde proceden la
mayor cantidad de sellos que se conocen hasta el momento
y por los pocos que han sido recobrados científicamente se
sabe que fueron usados como ofrendas funerarias y que
unos pocos han aparecido en espacios habitacionales. Para
el caso de esta región, el uso de los sellos pareciera ser
similar a los del Pacífico Norte, es decir, que fueron
utilizados esencialmente para la decoración corporal en
actividades rituales y como marcadores de rangos sociales.
Aunque la evidencia tiende a señalar la utilización de los
sellos por parte de sectores de la sociedad que están
relacionados con las actividades políticas y ceremoniales,
no se puede descartar que la decoración corporal fuera
usada por otros grupos de la sociedad, ya sea por medio de
la pintura directa o por medio de sellos o tatuajes.
Es importante aclarar que los diseños que aparecen en las
figuras cerámicas que representan a mujeres decoradas
similares a los de los sellos fueron pintados simulando la
impresión del sello y no debe interpretarse que el sello fue
utilizado para decorar la figura cerámica.
The Central region of the country is from
where we have the majority of the stamps that
are known to date, and from the very few that
have been recovered in a scientific way, we
know that they were used as funeral offerings
and a few have appeared in living areas. For
this region, the use of stamps seems to be
similar to that of the Northern Pacific, in other
words, they were used essentially for corporal
decoration in ritual activities and as indicators
of social status.
Although the evidence points to the fact that
the use of stamps was practiced by sectors of
society that were related to political and
ceremonial activities, one cannot disregard
that corporal decoration might have also been
used by other groups, be it by way of direct
painting or by the use of stamps or tattooing.
It is important to point out that the designs
that appear on the ceramic figures which
represent women decorated with designs
similar to those of the stamps were painted
simulating the impression of the stamp, and
it should not be interpreted that the stamp
itself was used to decorate the ceramic figure.

 Técnicas de manufactura
y estampado
La manufactura de sellos se llevó a cabo como parte del
trabajo cerámico que hacía un grupo determinado en una
región y en un período de tiempo específicos, por lo que es
de esperarse que las arcillas y los procedimientos utilizados
para la producción de sellos fueran similares a los utilizados
para producir otras cerámicas.
De la misma manera que se hacía con cualquier otro objeto
cerámico, el sello era modelado de manera individual y se
le daba la forma que se quería, ya fuera cilíndrica o plana.
Para la elaboración de los diseños no se utilizaba un molde
con las decoraciones previamente dibujadas; los entresacados
se hacían cuando el material estaba todavía blando y se
realizaban mediante la técnica de excisión, que consiste en
quitar parte de la superficie de la arcilla, con lo cual se
lograba obtener un diseño en alto y bajo relieve. El dibujo
elaborado en los sellos cilíndricos abarcaba toda la superficie,
pero en el caso de los sellos planos, el dibujo cubría solamente
la superficie lisa. Finalmente, el sello era horneado.
Como se ha dicho existen dos formas de sellos, los planos
y los cilíndricos. Ambas formas fueron manufacturadas por
los grupos del Pacífico Norte y la Región Central; sin embargo,
los sellos planos predominan en esta última. Los sellos
planos pueden ser de forma circular, ondulada, cuadrangular
y presentan una prolongación en la parte superior, a manera
de mango, que probablemente servía como soporte para facilitar
el proceso de impresión.

Manufacturing and Stamping
Techniques
The manufacture of stamps was part of the
ceramic work done by a determined group
within a region and during specific periods of
time. Therefore, one can expect that the clay
and the procedures used for the production of
stamps were similar to those used for
producing other ceramic pieces.
Just as it was done with any other ceramic
object, the stamp was molded individually and
it was given the desired shape, be it cylindrical
or flat. No mold with decorations previously
drawn was used for the elaboration of the
designs; the cuts were made when the
material was still soft and they were
done using the technique of
excision, which consists of taking
out part of the surface of the
clay, resulting in a high and
low relief design. The drawing
on the cylindrical stamps
used up all of its surface,
but in the case of the flat
stamps, the drawing
would only cover the
smooth surface. Finally,
the stamp was baked in
an oven.
As it has been stated, there
are two types of stamps: flat
and cylindrical. Both types
were manufactured by the groups
of the Northern Pacific and the Central
region; however, the flat stamps have a
predominance in the latter region.
The flat stamps might have a round, oval or
quadrangular shape, and they have a

Los sellos cilíndricos pueden ser sólidos o tubulares. Los
sellos cilíndricos sólidos presentan en sus extremos una
leve concavidad; así cuando es sujetado por los extremos,
las yemas de dos dedos se apoyan de manera adecuada en
esta, lo que permite sujetarlo firmemente durante el
proceso de estampado. En el caso de los tubulares, es
posible que se pasara de un extremo a otro algún tipo de
eje con la finalidad de hacer una impresión continua por
rodamiento del cilindro. En la mayoría de los tubulares, los
extremos de los cilindros presentan decoraciones.

In the case of the tubular stamps, it is probable
that some type of axle might have passed
from one side to the other in order to make a
continuous impression by rolling the stamp.
In the majority of the tubular stamps, the
sides of the cylinders also have decorations.
The solid cylinders have on their sides a slight
concavity; thus, when held by the sides, the
fingertips are supported in an adequate
manner, which allows one to tightly hold on
to the cylinder during the printing process.

 Con respecto a la técnica con que se realizaban los diseños,
es importante resaltar el hecho de que los entresacados se
hacían cuando el material tenía cierto grado de solidez por
lo cual era sensible a la deformación, esto demandaba un
dominio técnico adecuado para poder elaborar diseños
complejos en cilindros que podían tener, por ejemplo, dos
centímetros de espesor. Además, el diseño debía cubrir toda
la superficie, de tal forma que los espacios que quedaban
en relieve y los espacios hundidos estuvieran equilibrados
para lograr crear un solo dibujo y a la vez, poder distinguir
las diferentes secciones del diseño.

In regard to the technique for making the
designs, it is important to point out that the
carving was done when the material had a
certain degree of solidness, and therefore it
was sensitive to deforming. This demanded
mastery from the craftsman to be able to
elaborate complex designs on cylinders that
may have had, for example, two centimeters
in width. In addition, the design had to cover
all of the surface, in such a way that both the
raised areas, as well as the indented ones were
balanced to create a single drawing and at the
same time, it should distinguish the different
sections of the design.

Las excisiones con que se realizaban los diseños podían ser
profundas o superficiales. Generalmente los diseños en los
sellos planos son de tipo profundo y en los sellos tubulares
se pueden encontrar los dos tipos, aunque en mayor
medida predominan las excisiones profundas.
La transferencia del diseño se lleva a cabo cuando se aplica
un pigmento a la superficie plana o elevada del dibujo y se
presiona sobre otra superficie. El proceso de estampado
mediante sellos no significa necesariamente que era fácil,
pues se requería cierto grado de destreza para dar
continuidad al diseño en los diferentes rodamientos, dado
que debía volverse a aplicar el pigmento después de cada
rodamiento.
The excisions with which the designs were
made could be deep or superficial. Normally,
the designs on the flat stamp are of the deep
type and in the tubular stamps one can find
both types, although there is a predominance
of deep excisions.

The transfer of the design is done when a
pigment is applied to the flat or raised surface of
the drawing and it is pressed against another
surface. The stamping process was not necessarily
an easy one, since it required a certain degree of
skill to be able to give continuity to the design
each time the stamp was rolled, and given the
fact that the pigment had to be applied again
after each impression.

 Con respecto a los pigmentos utilizados para el proceso de
estampado con sellos, no se cuenta con evidencia directa,
pero es probable que se utilizaran pigmentos de origen
vegetal, los cuales debían tener cierta viscosidad que
permitiera su adherencia tanto a la superficie del sello
como a la superficie a la cual se aplicaba. Para ello es
posible que se añadiera al pigmento algún tipo de grasa o
pegante, tal y como lo comenta Gonzalo Fernández de
Oviedo con respecto a la manera en que se preparaba el
achiote para pintarse el cuerpo:
"e de aquellos (achiote) hacen una pelotas los indios
con que después se pintan las caras, e lo mezclan con
ciertas gomas, e se hacen unas pinturas como
bermellón fino, e de aquella color se pintan las caras
y el cuerpo." 1
En el caso de la piel humana, es probable que además se
necesitara un pigmento indeleble. En la actualidad, algunos
grupos indígenas, como los Embera de Panamá y Colombia,
utilizan un pigmento de color negro que es extraído del
fruto del árbol de guatil o jagua (Genipa americana) con
el cual se hacen decoraciones corporales. Otro pigmento
que está documentado en fuentes históricas y que ha sido
utilizado en forma muy amplia por la mayoría de los
pueblos indígenas, es el achiote,(Bixa orellana) ya señalado,
del cual se obtiene un color rojo-naranja, producto de la
maceración de las semillas.
In regard to the pigments that were used in the
stamping process, there is no direct evidence
but it is probable that they used vegetable
dyes or pigments, which had to have a certain
degree of viscosity which would allow its
adherence both to the surface of the stamp as
well as to the surface to which it was to be
applied. For this purpose, it is possible that
some sort of grease or adhesive might have
been added to the pigment, as it is commented
by Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo in regard to
the way in which the annatto was prepared to
be applied as paint on the body:
"and from those (annatto) the Indians
make balls with which they later paint
their faces, and they mix it with
certain adhesives, and they make
some paints that are similar to a fine
vermilion, and from that color they
paint their faces and bodies." 1
In the case of human skin it is plausible that
there was a need for indelible pigments. Today,
some indigenous groups such as the Embera
of Panama and Colombia use a black colored
pigment that is extracted from the fruit of a
guatil or jagua tree (Genipa americana), with
which they make body decorations. Another
pigment that is documented by historical
sources and that has been used extensively by
indigenous groups is the annatto (Bixa orellana),
which has already been mentioned. From this
fruit a reddish-orange color is obtained, as a
product of the maceration of the seeds.

 Los diseños
Se conoce muy poco sobre la utilización de los sellos para
poder interpretar el significado de sus diseños; sin embargo,
la similitud que existe entre los temas representados en los
sellos y los de otros materiales arqueológicos nos indica
por una parte, una posible asociación contemporánea de
todos estos objetos y por otra parte, nos hace suponer que
los diseños representados en estos distintos materiales
tenían un significado que era conocido por quienes los
utilizaban y por quienes los observaban, ya fuera pintados
en la piel, en una cerámica o en un objeto de piedra.
Los grupos precolombinos utilizaron diseños como un
medio para comunicar ideas; cuantas más veces se repetía
un diseño, era más probable que se conociera su significado,
puesto que en la repetición es donde está la clave para que
un concepto se convierta en un elemento de comunicación.
El hecho de que existan sellos de distintos tamaños con
diseños semejantes,nos refuerza la idea del papel comunicativo
que debieron cumplir.

The Designs
Very little is known in regard to the use of the
stamps to be able to interpret the meaning of
their designs. Nevertheless, the similarity that
exists between the themes represented in the
stamps and those present in other archeological
materials indicates, on the one hand, a
possible contemporary association of all of
these objects, and on the other, it makes us
presume that the represented designs in those
different materials had a meaning that was
known to the people that used them, and by
those who observed them, be them painted on
the skin, on a piece of ceramic or on a stone
object.
The pre-Columbian groups used designs as a
way of communicating ideas; the more a
design was repeated, it was more feasible that
its meaning was known, since it is in the
repetition where the key for a concept to
become a communication element lies. The
fact that there are stamps of different sizes
with similar designs reinforces the idea of the
communicative role that they had.

categorías: las figuras geométricas, por un lado, y las
representaciones de animales y seres humanos, por otro. Los
diseños geométricos se componen de líneas horizontales,
verticales, onduladas y escalonadas, así como de círculos,
espirales, rectángulos, cuadrados y triángulos con bordes
lisos o dentados. Los diseños geométricos aparecen en las
decoraciones que se realizan en la cerámica y forman parte
de los diseños que acompañan a las figuras humanas y de
animales que fueron manufacturados en distintos materiales.
In general, the designs may be grouped into
two categories: geometric figures on one hand,
and the representations of animals and
human beings on the other. The geometric
designs are made up of horizontal, vertical,
curved and scaled lines, as well as of circles,
spirals, rectangles, squares and triangles with
smooth and spiky edges. Geometric designs
are present in the decorations on ceramics and
they are part of the designs that accompany
human and animal figures that were
manufactured in different materials.

The representation of the human figure or of parts of it is the
least common design category amongst stamps. The animal
designs are generally represented by the figure of birds,
monkeys and snakes, which can be found drawn in a realistic
or stylized manner.

 Existe una serie de elementos de diseño que aparecen
tanto en los sellos como en otros materiales. A partir de
esto se podría conjeturar algunas cosas en cuanto a la
importancia que pudo tener un diseño en particular de
acuerdo con el tipo de objetos en que suelen estar presentes.
Por ejemplo, el diseño en forma de cruz, que se conoce
como "cruz Kan", está relacionado con la región maya y
aparece de manera importante en las decoraciones
cerámicas del Pacífico Norte, entre los años 800 y 1350
d.C., especialmente en el tipo cerámico Mora Policromo.
Objetos Mora Policromo han aparecido como ofrendas
funerarias en enterramientos de la Región Central.
Posiblemente estos objetos llegaron allí como resultado
del intercambio entre ambas regiones. Dado que este
motivo también está presente en los sellos de las dos
regiones, podría suponerse una relación temporal y asumir
que también se compartía el significado del motivo "cruz
Kan", el cual debió ser social y simbólicamente importante
para representarlo en objetos cerámicos utilizados para el
intercambio y en objetos utilizados para las decoraciones de
personajes de alto rango.
El motivo en forma de guiloche o de una banda trenzada, que
generalmente representa a dos serpientes entrelazadas,
aparece de manera constante en materiales del Pacífico Norte
desde el año 300 a.C. hasta el 700 d.C., formando parte de las
decoraciones de jades, cerámicas y metates. Estos objetos
decorados con diseños de guiloche han aparecido como
ofrendas funerarias en enterramientos de personajes de alto
rango.
Este diseño también se puede encontrar en los bordes de
los metates, en las lápidas funerarias, en las figuras
humanas en piedra y en algunos tipos cerámicos de la
Región Central; es decir, en objetos que fueron de uso
ritual y marcadores de rango. Este motivo está presente en
los sellos de las dos regiones, aunque en este caso, si
tratamos de hacer una relación temporal, habría que
señalar que es un motivo más temprano en el Pacífico
Norte y posterior, quizá después del año 1000 d.C, en la
Región Central. Por otro lado, es importante comentar el
hecho de que existe una similitud en ambas regiones en
cuanto a la utilización del diseño de guiloche en las
decoraciones de objetos de uso no cotidiano, por lo que su
representación en los sellos podría tener un significado
similar.

There is a series of design elements that
appear both on the stamps as well as on other
materials. Based on this one might come to
some conclusions in regard to the relevance
that a particular design might have had,
judging from the type of object on which they
are commonly present.
For example, the cross shaped design, that is
known as "cuz Kan", is related to the Maya
region and it is an important element in ceramic
decorations of the Northern Pacific, between
the years 800 and 1350 AD, especially in the
Mora-Polychrome ceramic type.
Mora-Polychrome objects have appeared as
funeral offerings in burials of the Central
region. These objects possibly came here as a
result of the exchange between both regions.
Since this design is also present in the stamps
of both regions, one could presume a
temporary relation and assume that the
meaning of the "cruz Kan" design was also
shared, and that it must have been socially
and symbolically important to have it
represented in ceramic objects used for the
exchange and on objects used for decorations
of high ranking persons.
The design in the shape of a "guiloche" or
braided band, that normally represents two
tangled snakes, constantly appears in
materials from the Northern Pacific from the
year 300 BC until 700 AD, as part of the decorations
on jade, on ceramic and on "metates". These
objects decorated with designs of "guiloches"
have appeared as funeral offerings in burials
of high ranking persons.
This design can also be found on the edges of
the "metates", on tombstones, on human
figures made of stone and on some ceramic
types from the Central region; in other words,
on ritual objects and indicators of rank. This
design is also present on the stamps of both
regions, although in this case, if we try to
make a temporary relationship, we would
have to point out that it is an earlier design for
the Northern Pacific and a later one, maybe
appearing after the year 1000 AD, in the Central
region. On the other hand, it is important to
notice that there is a similarity in both regions
in regard to the use of the design of the
"guiloche" in the decoration of objects that are
not for everyday use, and therefore its use in the
stamps may have a similar meaning.

El dibujo de líneas transversales que forman un diseño
similar al tejido de la cestería, es un símbolo de origen
maya utilizado para identificar a un personaje de alto

cerámicos y metates de las regiones citadas entre los años

La técnica de pintura negativa que se utilizaba en la
decoración cerámica es similar al proceso de impresión
mediante un sello, en el sentido de que en ambos procesos
se obtienen espacios de un solo color sobre fondos que
tienen el color de la superficie. También existe semejanza
en algunos de los diseños realizados con estas dos técnicas.
La pintura negativa está presente en objetos cerámicos
desde el año 400 d.C., aunque aparece con mayor frecuencia
después del año 1000 d.C.
The drawing of transversal lines that make up
a design similar to the knitting found in
basket weaving, is a symbol of Mayan origin
used for identifying a high ranking person.
This design appears on decorations of ceramic
and metal objects of the above stated regions
between the years 500 and 1100 AD. In the
stamps, this design is associated, especially, to
the samples that have been found in the
Central region.
The technique of negative painting used in
ceramic decoration is similar to the process of
printing using stamps in the sense that in
both processes you obtain one-colored spaces
over a background that has the color of the
surface. There is also a similarity in some of the
designs made with these two techniques. The
negative paint is present in ceramic objects
since the year 400 AD, although they appear
more frequently after the year 1000 AD.

 Con respecto a las formas y tamaños de los sellos, no
existen diferencias en cuanto a los diseños representados,
las diferencias pueden estar relacionadas más bien con el
tipo de superficie en que se aplicaban. Lo mismo sucede
con el tamaño de los sellos, estos debieron haber sido
diseñados en relación con las áreas que se iban a cubrir.
Por ejemplo, en la decoración corporal, los sellos cilíndricos
de diámetro pequeño pudieron haber sido usados para
decorar la cara o áreas como los pechos, muñecas y
tobillos, en donde se requiere que el cilindro pueda rotar
fácilmente.
La mayoría de los diseños presentes en los sellos cilíndricos
están concebidos de acuerdo con módulos o unidades de
diseño, de manera que, cuando se rota el sello, se obtiene
una secuencia continua del diseño.

Concerning the shapes and sizes of the stamps,
there are no differences in regard to the
designs that are represented. Differences here
might be related more with the type of surface
to which they were applied. The same thing
happens with the size of the stamps, these
were probably designed according to the areas
they had to cover. For example, in body
decoration, the cylindrical stamps of smaller
diameters might have been used for decorating
the face or areas such as the breasts, wrists
and ankles, where it is required for the cylinder
to roll easily.
The majority of the designs present in the
cylindrical stamps are conceived according to
design modules or units.

Existen también otros arreglos de composición que parten
de un solo elemento que se repite para formar un diseño;
de igual manera hay diseños que están hechos de tal forma
que se pueden hacer impresiones de bandas sobrepuestas,
con lo cual se puede obtener un dibujo continuo en el cual
no se puede distinguir ni el comienzo ni el final del diseño.
Evidentemente, en la elaboración de los diseños presentes
en los sellos no solo existe una intención de comunicación
cuando se selecciona un motivo, sino que también se logra
obtener una creación artística de alto sentido estético.
There are also some other arrangements of
composition that begin with one independent
element that repeats itself to form the design;
likewise, there are designs that are made in
such a way that impressions of overlapping
bands can be made, with which a continuous
drawing might be obtained, where one cannot
distinguish neither the beginning nor the end
of the design.
Evidently, in the elaboration of the designs
present in the stamps, there is not only the
intention of communicating when choosing
the design, but also an artistic creation with a
high sense of the aesthetic is obtained.

 Cuerpos y caras pintadas
Ya se ha comentado con anterioridad el hecho de que no
existe evidencia directa acerca del tipo de superficies en
que pudieron haber sido aplicados los diseños presentes
en los sellos sin embargo, la información arqueológica que
se ha utilizado como referencia para poder contextualizar
el uso y determinar el significado de algunos de sus
diseños, refuerza la idea de que los sellos fueron empleados
para la decoración corporal de personas que ocupaban
altos cargos ceremoniales o políticos.
Se sabe también que las representaciones de figuras en las
que se encuentran decoraciones similares a las de los sellos
son principalmente de figuras femeninas, al menos para el
período comprendido entre el 100 a.C. y el 700 d.C.
Para épocas posteriores al año 1000 d.C., es poco lo que se
conoce acerca de la decoración corporal. Figuras de
hombres y mujeres elaboradas en piedra, provenientes de
las regiones central y sureste de Costa Rica, presentan
decoraciones en el cuerpo que semejan tatuajes en vez de
impresiones realizadas con sellos o pintura directa sobre la piel.
Para el período de contacto no hay datos para Costa Rica
acerca del uso de los sellos sin embargo, existe un texto de
Fray Diego de Landa, escrito en el siglo XVl, en el que se
comenta el uso entre los mayas de lo que podría ser un sello:
"Usaban una pieza en forma de ladrillo y que en dicho
ladrillo trazaban labores y con ellos decoraban sus
pechos, brazos y espalda".2
En los documentos históricos de Costa Rica para el
período de contacto, hay una descripción hecha en el año
1529 por Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo acerca de los
indígenas que habitaban en el Golfo de Nicoya en donde
se refiere a la costumbre de tatuarse el cuerpo:
"Todos los indios de Nicoya, en especial los principales
é sus mujeres, traen pintados los brazos de aquella
pintura negra que se hace con la sangre propia é
carbón, cortando é dibujando primero con navajas de
pedernal; é la divisa son trigres, que estos Chorotegas
llaman nambue".3

Painted Bodies and Faces
As it has previously been mentioned, there is no direct evidence
in regard to the types of surfaces on which the designs found
in the stamps might have been applied, still, the archeological
information that has been used as a reference to contextualize
their use and to determine the meaning of some of the designs
reinforces the idea that the stamps were used for body decoration
of people who held high ceremonial and political charges.
It is also known that the representation of figures in which there
are decorations similar to the stamps are primarily female figures,
at least for the period between the years 100 BC to 700 AD.
For periods later than the year 1000 AD, there is very little
known about corporal decoration. Figures of men and women
made in stone, coming from the central and southeastern
regions of Costa Rica have decorations on the body resembling
tattoos, instead of impressions made with stamps or direct
painting on the skin.
For the contact period there is no data for Costa Rica in regard
to the use of stamps. There is however, a text written by Fray
Diego de Landa in the XVI century, in which there is a comment
in regard to the use by the Mayas of what could be a stamp:
"They used a piece in the shape of a brick and on said
brick they would carve designs and with them they
would decorate their chests, arms and back." 2
In Costa Rican historical documents for the contact period,
there is a description made in the year 1529 by Gonzalo
Fernandez de Oviedo in regard to the indigenous groups that
inhabited the Golf of Nicoya, where he makes a reference to
their custom of tattooing their bodies:
"All the Indians of Nicoya, and especially the leaders
and their women have their arms painted in that
black paint that is made with their own blood and
with charcoal, cutting and drawing first with blades
from the flint; and the designs are tigers, that these
Chorotegas call "nambue"." 3

Este texto no deja duda del uso generalizado de la
decoración corporal por parte de hombres y mujeres
principales así como del pueblo, pero Fernández de Oviedo,
también da información sobre los distintos diseños usados
por las gentes principales, el pueblo y los esclavos:
"… cada cacique, también sus esclavos herrados tienen
su señal diferenciada en el brazo o en la cara. También
los caciques se pintan a sí y a sus indios y gente, y tiene
sus divisas e invenciones de pinturas, muy diferentes
de las que usan poner a los esclavos y hacen aquellas
labores con cierto carbón molido que llaman thyle, que
echan sobre lo que han cortado con una navaja de
pedernal, o punzándose con unas espinas de tunas que
sacan sangre, en la cual se hacen señales para cuanto
vivan, que es negro".3
La decoración corporal no solamente fue utilizada como un
medio para expresar roles sociales, sino que también puede
ser una forma de manifestar la participación en festividades
y comunicar acerca de los estados de ánimo de las personas,
así lo hace ver otro relato de Fernández de Oviedo:
"… se hacen unas pinturas como bermellón fino, e de
aquella color se pintan las caras y el cuerpo. Las indias
hacen lo mismo cuando quieren hacer sus fiestas y los
indios cuando quieren parecer bien, e cuando van a
pelear por parecer feroces".4
This text eliminates any doubt there might be
in regard to the generalized use of corporal
decoration by the leading men and women, as
well as by the people, but Fernandez de Oviedo
also provides some information in regard to the
different designs used by the leaders, the people
and the slaves:
"… each cacique, also his branded
slaves have a differentiated sign on
their arm or face. Also the caciques
paint themselves and their Indians
and people, and they have their devices
and inventions for painting, very
different to the ones they use to put on
the slaves and they do that labor with
certain ground charcoal that they call
"thyle", which they put over what they
have cut using a flint blade, or by
pinching themselves with a thorn from
a cactus with which they extract blood,
on which they make signs for as long
as they live, which is black." 3
Body decoration was not used only as a way
of expressing social roles, but it could also be
a way of stating the participation in festivities
and communicating one’s state of mind to
others, as expressed in another account by
Fernandez de Oviedo:
"... they make some paints as fine vermilion,
and of that color they paint their faces
and body. The women do this same
thing when they want to make their
parties and the men when they want
to look fine, and when they are going
to fight to look ferocious." 4

 Es muy probable que en tiempos precolombinos se pueda
hablar de un uso generalizado de la decoración corporal,
para lo cual se recurrió a distintos métodos para lograrlo;
sin embargo, no podemos saber si se usaron de manera
simultánea o si existen diferencias temporales y regionales
en la utilización de estos métodos de decoración.
Lo que sí se puede asegurar, y apreciar, es la calidad técnica
y la belleza de estos pequeños objetos que por mucho
tiempo han escapado de la atención y la investigación
científica.

It is very probable that in pre-Columbian
times we could talk about a generalized use of
body decoration, for which they used different
methods to achieve it; nevertheless, we cannot
know if they were used simultaneously or if
there were time and regional differences in the
use of the decoration methods.
