magnetita pirrotita,
magnetita, pirrotita ilmenita,
ilmenita wolframita; recuperación del medio denso
ferrosilicio/magnetita; floculación magnética, etc.

smelter contract. Typically the coke used in the blast furnace is the more
important source of sulphur.
Separation Techniques:
B. Gravity concentrators
Advantage
g can be taken of the relatively
y high
g density y of hematite and
magnetite (4900-5300 and 5180 kg m-3 respectively) compared to quartz.
Jigs and shaking tables have both been used in the past for treatment of
iron ores. These separators have largely been superseded by spiral
concentrators (and HMS). The optimum feed size for spirals is 2mm -
75μm.
C. Flotation
Flotation is normally considered for fine-grained iron ores which after
liberation is at a size too fine to be ideally suited to gravity
concentration. It is general practice to de-slime the material at around
15 μm prior to flotation. This results in a lowering of recovery but is
beneficial in terms of reduced reagent requirements. Flotation of
hematite can be performed with a range of anionic collectors including
petroleum sulfonates (at pH 3-5) and fatty acids (neutral to acid circuit).
Alternatively quartz can be floated away from the Fe minerals using a
cationic collector (amine or amine-derivative) and a hematite depressant
- an example of Reverse Flotation.
Flotation Conditioning prior to flotation is
typically performed at a high pulp density (65-70% solids) with a heavy
fuel oil (1-2 kg/tonne) added to improve the flotation of the coarser
particles in particular.
D. Magnetic separation
Magnetic separation is the concentration method of choice for ores
where magnetite predominates. Dry low intensity magnetic separation
may be considered for upgrading coarse materials. Wet low intensity
separators (such as the drum type) are the most common with the ore
being milled before processing.

E. High tension separation
Specular hematite (conductor) is separated from quartz (insulator) at
the Wabush concentrator in Labrador from a spiral concentrator
concentrate. This provides an ideal feed for high tension separation as
the p
particles are closely
y sized and there is relatively y little -45 μ
μm
material that would cause dusting.
F. Selective Flocculation
A system for selective flocculation of iron ores (fine grained taconites)
was developed by the US Bureau of Mines. The process used at the
Tilden mine involves
in ol es initially
initiall dispersing the feed by
b raising the pH to
approximately 11 which has the effect of producing a high negative
surface charge (as measured by the zeta potential) on each of the
minerals The effectiveness of the dispersion process depends to some
minerals.
extent on water quality, with a high dissolved solids content leading to
problems due to reduced mineral zeta potential. Corn starch is the
selective flocculant used for hematite. Hematite flocs are recovered by
sedimentation in a thickener. The settled product will contain some
coarse quartz as well as the flocs. At Tilden the coarser quartz is
removed by flotation using an amine collector.

Por i ió
