NOTA DE LA TRADUCTORA

Muerte de un naturalista, publicado en 1966, es considerado por la

crítica como el primer poemario del Premio Nobel de Literatura 1995
Seamus Heaney. Con anterioridad a este libro sólo había publicado
Eleven Poems, en 1965, que ha de ser tomado más como una pri­
meriza y breve recopilación que como un libro unitario.
Ya desde esta primera entrega muestra Heaney un dominio de las
_0¡_:mas y los temas que sin lugar a dudas indica muchas horas de es­
critura, de corrección y de reflexión, antes de dar a la luz su prime­
ra obra.
El I ibro arranca con un poema paradigmático, como es "Digging",
---
que se ha antologado y recitado como uno de los más característicos
...___
de su autor. En esta obra aparecend�s temas que van a ser recurren-
tes en sus entregas posteriores: los recuerdos de la infancia, la me­
moria de los ancestros, el poder de la tierra, las faenas del campo y
la conciencia social y política.
El lenguaje, apare�te!11ente sencillo y concreto, ofrece una ex­
traoroiñaria dificultad para el traductor, ya que, con frecuencia, uti­
liza términos locales y muy precisos, aludiendo a actividades y jer­
gas perfectamente especializadas.

 Creo que es de esta forma, como Heaney ha conseguido ser un
poeta de aliento universal a la vez que un cantor de su pequeño te­
rruño natal irlandés. Heaney habla con propiedad definitiva porque
habla de lo que conoce muy bien; habla de lo suyo y con las palabras
de su tribu.
Valga, pues, esta traducción como un intento de ofrecer al lector
español un acercamiento a un tipo de poesía poco habitual en nues­
tras latitudes.

ALL year the jlax-dam festered in the heart
Of the townland; green and heavy headed
Flax had rotted there, weighted down by huge sods.
Daily it sweltered in the punishing sun.
Bubbles gargled delicately, bluebottles
Wove a strong gauze of sound around the smell.
There were dragon-flies, spotted butterflies,
But hest of all was the warm thick slobber
Offrogspawn that grew like clotted water
ln the shade of the banks. Here, every spring,
l would fill jampotfuls of the jellied
Specks to range on window-sills at home,
On shelves at school, and wait and watch until
The fattening dots burst into nimble-

A THtCK crust, coarse-grained as limestone rough-cast,
hardened gradually on top of the four erocks
that stood, large pottery bombs, in the small pantry.
After the hot brewery of gland, cud and udder,
cool porous earthenware fermented the buttermilk
for churning day, when the hooped churn was scoured
with plumping kettles and the busy scrubber
echoed daintily on the seasoned wood.
lt stood then, purified, on the flagged kitchenfloor.
Out carne the four crocks, spilled their heavy lip
of cream, their white insides, into the sterile churn.
The staff, Like a great whisky muddler fashioned

My mother tookfirst turn, set up rhythms
that slugged and thumped for hours. Arms ached.
Hands blistered. Cheeks and clothes were spattered withflabby
milk.
Wherefinally goldflecks
began to dance. They poured hot water then,
sterilized a birchwood-bowl

Their short stroke quickened, suddenly
a yellow curd was weighting the churned up white,
heavy and rich, coagulated sunlight
