USO DEL MODAL WOULD

¿Qué son los verbos modales? Son un tipo de verbos auxiliares, es decir que presentan la
particularidad de aparecer junto a otro verbo, usados para expresar modalidad.
El verbo modal would en afirmativo, se usa en una oración de reported speech. (Discurso directo)
Usamos los siguientes verbos en una oración de discurso directo: Sing, go, speak, play, dance,
write, and sleep.
Examples:
 He said: he would come to my house. Él dijo: Que vendría a mi casa.
 She said: he would go to the hotel. Ella dijo: Que el iría al hotel.
 He said: she would sleep in the bedroom. Él: Que ella dormiría en el dormitorio.
 He said: he would go to the park. Él dijo: Que el iría al parque.
 She said: he would dance in the party. Ella dijo: Que el bailaría en la fiesta.
 She said: he would write a book. Ella dijo: Que el escribiría un libro.
 He said: we would play football tomorrow. Él dijo: Que nosotros jugaríamos futbol mañana.
 She said: they would sing romantic music. Ella dijo: Que ellos cantarían música romántica.
 The director said: the students would pass virtual class the next Monday.
 La directora dijo: Que los estudiantes pasarían clases virtuales el próximo lunes.
 My mother said: I would go to the supermarket. Mi madre dijo: Que yo iría al mercado.
Would, sirve para construir frases interrogativas y negativas sin necesidad de utilizar auxiliares
como do o does.

NEGATIVE FORM.
Verbo modal would en la forma Negativa, se usa la palabra not acompañado del modal would
=WOULD NOT o también se usa la forma contractada (Contracted form WOULDN’T).
Examples:
1. I would not go to the disco. Yo no iría a la disco
2. She would not dance in the school. Ella no bailaría en el colegio.
3. He would not sing in the party. Él no cantaría en la fiesta.
4. You would not eat five oranges today. Tú no comerías cinco naranjas.
AFFIRMATIVE FORM.
Todos los tiempos verbales en castellano, se forman con la terminación ría.
Como iría, vería, bebería, cortaría, pintaría, cocinaría, cantaría, bailaría, jugaría, etc., se forman en
inglés anteponiendo la palabra would al verbo.
Examples:
1. I would travel around the world. Yo viajaría al rededor del mundo.
2. She would visit her grandmother tomorrow. Ella visitaría a su abuela mañana.
3. The cat would run in the garden. El gato correría en el jardín.
4. We would sleep on the sofa. Nosotras dormiríamos sobre el sofá.
5. You would wash a pair of shoes. Ustedes lavarían un par de zapatos.
6. They would open the books. Ellos abrirían los libros.
7. He would like to read newspapers. Le gustaría leer periódicos.
REVISAMOS LAS TRES FORMAS DEL MODAL WOULD
El afirmativo, se forma con el auxiliar would y el infinitivo del verbo principal (puede ser
cualquier verbo), En este ejemplo utilizamos el verbo sing para los diferentes pronombres
personales.

I would sing in the theatre. Yo cantaría en el teatro.

You would sing in the school. Tú cantarías en el colegio.

He would read quechua sentences. Él leería oraciones en quechua.

She would cook Sajta. Ella cocinaría Sajta.

It would sing. Cantaría

We would complete the sentences. Nosotros completaríamos las oraciones, Nosotras

completaríamos las oraciones.

You would drink milk in the school. Ustedes beberían leche en el colegio.

They would brush their hair. Ellos cepillarían sus cabellos, Ellas cepillarían sus cabellos.

El interrogativo, se forma anteponiendo el auxiliar would al sujeto e infinitivo, es decir el verbo:

Would I sing in the theatre? ¿Cantaría yo en el teatro?

Would you open the door? ¿ Abrirías tú la puerta?

Would he study in the library? ¿Estudiaría él en la biblioteca?

Would she sleep in the bed? ¿Dormiría Ella en el dormitorio?

Would it sing in the garden? ¿Cantaría en el jardín?

Would we Paint the chair? ¿Pintaríamos nosotros (as) las sillas?

Would you write stories? ¿ Escribirían ustedes historias?

Would they cut onions in the kitchen? ¿Cortarían ellos (as) cebollas en la cocina?

Would you like some cookies?  ¿Gustaría algunas galletas?

 Would you read newspapers? ¿Leerías periódicos?

La forma negativa, se forma agregando la palabra NOT entre el auxiliar would y el infinitivo:

I would not sing in the school. Yo no cantaría en el colegio.

You would not visit your grandparents. Tú no visitarías a tus abuelos.

He would not watch the television. Él no vería la televisión.

She would not wash the floor. Ella no lavaría el piso

It would not sing. No cantaría

We would not speak in English. Nosotros no hablaríamos en inglés, Nosotras no hablaríamos en

inglés.

You would not listen the songs. Ustedes no escucharían las canciones.

They would not be in the school next Friday. Ellos no estarían en el colegio el próximo viernes.
Ellas no estarían en el colegio el próximo viernes.

¿Cómo se forma en inglés el tiempo condicional?

El condicional Simple se forma anteponiendo would al verbo, y se hace uso de if para indicar
condición o consecuencia:

I would sing if you asked it to me. Cantaría si me lo pidieras.

I would not eat that watermelon if I were you.  Si fuera tú no me comería esa sandía.

I would cook roasted chicken if you go to the supermarket. Cocinaría pollo dorado si tú vas al
Mercado.

If I had a lot of money, I would travel to Mexico.  Si tuviera mucho dinero, viajaría a México).

TIPS PARA EL USO DE WOULD. Recuerda que

Cuando usas el would con la tercera persona del singular en el presente simple, la terminación no
cambia. Es decir que no necesitas agregar la -s.

Así mismo, no debes agregar a would ninguna terminación como -ing o -ed.

Would sirve para construir frases interrogativas y negativas sin necesidad de utilizar auxiliares
como do o does.
