2. PRESENTACIÓN

Para formar el pasado continuo se utiliza el verbo auxiliar “to be” y el verbo+ing. El verbo auxiliar
“to be” está en el pasado simple, pero se debe tener en cuenta que “to be” es un verbo irregular.

Structure (Estructura)

 Affirmative Sentences (Frases afirmativas)

Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + verbo+ing.


Ejemplos:

 I was talking. (Estaba hablando.)


 He was eating. (Estaba comiendo.)
 They were learning. (Estaban aprendiendo.)

 Negative Sentences (Frases negativas)

Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) +”not” verbo+ing.


Ejemplos:

 I was not [wasn’t] talking. (No estaba hablando.)


 He was not [wasn’t] eating. (No estaba comiendo.)
 They were not [weren’t] learning. (No estaban aprendiendo.)

 Interrogative Sentences (Frases interrogativas)

verbo auxiliar (to be) + Sujeto + verbo+ing.


Ejemplo:

 Were you talking? (¿Estabas hablando?)


 Was he eating? (¿Estaba comiendo?)

Uses (Usos)

A. Read the reviews and choose the correct options (1–10).

Magical Places in Colombia

The Salt Cathedral Anna (New Zealand)

When I was in Colombia, I went to the Salt Cathedral in


Zipaquirá, which is underground – it’s literally a church that
is under the ground! While I (1) took / was taking photos,

place to visit!

Las Lajas Sanctuary Matthieu (France)

A year ago, I (3) visited / was visiting Las Lajas Sanctuary in


Ipiales, which is an amazing old church in the middle of a

arriving at the cathedral, a large group of people (5)

were celebrating Easter Sunday. In my opinion, it was the

I can’t believe that I missed my favorite dance show on TV last night! Do you want to know why

2. Imagine you are on a trip. Write an email explaining what you did yesterday. Use the

Dear grandfather, the last week we arrived in Tunja, in the Department of Boyacá . It was a

long bus trip, while we were traveling, I saw the beautiful landscapes. The weather was

very cold so we used sacks, hats and scarves to warm us up a little. We stayed in a hotel in

the city center.

We went to Bolivar´s Square, while we were walking there were people who were selling

crafts. I was taking pictures, when my sister asked me to take a picture next to the statue

of Simon Bolivar.

The next day, we traveled to the municipality of Sogamoso, there we were very happy

while we were eating some boyacense arepas.

I promised you I will call you soon. I sent you a greeting, I love you very much.
