The World Health Organization

Who we are
Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) is the United
Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote
health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable – so everyone,
everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
What we do
The World Health Organization leads global efforts to expand
universal health coverage. We direct and coordinate
the world’s response to health emergencies. And we promote
healthier lives – from pregnancy care through old age.
Where we work
Working with 194 Member States across six regions and on the ground in 150+ locations,
the WHO team works to improve everyone’s ability to enjoy good health and well-being.
Who we work with
Collaboration is at the heart of all we do. From governments and civil society to
international organizations, foundations, advocates, researchers and health workers – we
mobilize every part of society to advance the health and security
of all. Health, according to the
How we are governed World Health
Organization, is "a state

proposed by Member States and selected by the World Health
Assembly every five years. The current Director-General, who has
been in office since July 2017, is the Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom.
Funding
The World Health Organization gets its money from two main sources:
· “Assessed contributions” paid by Member States every year. They are a percentage
of a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
· “Voluntary contributions” from Member States and other partners.
