Relatives Spanish
RELATIVO
Son oraciones subordinadas que se emplean cuando queremos añadir información
sobre personas o cosas. Estas oraciones van inmediatamente detrás de la palabra
de la que queremos dar más información.
The man who/that is over there is my best friend (no se puede omitir)

WHO
Este pronombre solo sirve para referirse a personas, y a veces para animales
dependiendo del contexto, tanto para identificarlas como para añadir información
adicional:
Ella es la mujer que me ayudó ayer. - She is the woman who helped me yesterday.
Esa es la gente a la que derrotamos. - They are the people who we beat.
El jefe, que tiene 56 años, adora el rugby. - The boss, who is 56 years old, loves rugby.
Ella juega al tenis con Sam, al que conoció en el colegio. - She plays tennis with Sam,
who she met at school.
WHICH
Este pronombre, por el contrario, solamente sirve para objetos y animales. Se suele
traducir como el cual, la cual, lo cual, etc., o 'que', y se puede sustituir por that. Sin
embargo, cuando se traduce por lo que, ¡no hay quien lo sustituya!
Ella tiene una cabaña la cual ellos pueden usar para el fin de semana. - She has a
cottage which they can use for the weekend.
Esos son los trenes que siempre se averían. - Those are the trains which always break
down.
El libro, que/el cual cuesta 20€, es un superventas. - The book, which costs 20€, is a
bestseller.
Todos llegamos a tiempo, lo que ayudó a que las cosas marcharan con fluidez. - We all
made it on time, which helped things run smoothly.
THAT
El pronombre comodín. Y es que that puede usarse tanto como para personas como para
objetos y animales:
¡Es el piso que quiero! - It's the flat that I want!
Yo soy la que te delató. - I'm the one that gave you away.
La silla, la cual uso para reuniones, se rompió esta mañana. - The chair, that I use for
meetings, broke this morning.
Sally, que es de Australia, siempre gana. - Sally, that is from Australia, always wins.
WHOSE
¡Ojo! No confundas whose con who, ya que whose solo ejerce la función de posesivo

para personas, animales y cosas. Piensa que en castellano se traduce como cuyo/a:
¿Es ese el hombre cuyo peluquín se cayó al río? Is that the man whose hairpiece fell
into the river?
Él es el capitán cuyas manos fueron cortadas. He's the captain whose hands were
cut off.
Estos árboles, a cuya fruta soy alérgica, son preciosos. These trees, whose fruit
I'm allergic to, are beautiful.
Mi perro, cuyo padre vivió 22 años, tiene ahora 18 años. My dog, whose father
lived to be 22, is now 18 years old.
