VERBOS MODALES NEED NOT – HAD BETTER- WOLD RATHER

NEED NOT

Puede funcionar como auxiliar modal, aunque se considera un semi-modal

porque tiene algunas diferencias:

Se usa principalmente en oraciones negativas e interrogativas para dar, denegar

o preguntar permisos.

Needn`t indica ausencia de obligación o necesidad. (no tener que… no es

necesario que…).

Forma negativa: need not (needn`t)

Podemos traducirlo en español como no necesitar (su conjugación seria: no

necesito, no necesitas, etc.) o como no tener que…

Sujeto + needn`t + verbo + complemento

Ejemplos:

She need not buy the new book./ ella no necesita comprar el libro nuevo

I needn`t go to school becase I am a genius. / No necesito ir a la escuela

porque soy un genio

You needn`t have bothered to come, today`s Sundays. / No te hubieras

molestado en venir, hoy es domingo.

I need not remind you how much is at stake here./ No necesito recordarle lo
mucho que está en juego aquí.

You need note emulate anyone else when you`re already so strong. / No
hace falta que emules a nadie cuando tú eres tan fuerte.

HAD BETTER

Es un verbo modal que se utiliza para dar consejos, indicar lo que es

conveniente o se debería hacer en esa situación actual o a futuro (nunca para
pasado). A veces se toma como una advertencia.

Se puede traducir como seria que, más vale que, haría mejor en, debería. Su
contracción es `d better.

Estructura

Afirmativa

Sujeto + had better + verbo + complemento

You had better practice before the final audition. / Es mejor que practiques
antes de la audición final.

We`d better let our mom know where we are or we`ll be punished. / Sera
mejor que le avisemos a nuestra mama donde estamos o seremos castigados.

Negativa

Sujeto + had better not + verbo + complemento

I`d better eat more popcorn today. I`ve already eaten too much./ Sera mejor
que no coma mas palomitas hoy. Ya he comido mucho.

She`d better not reveal my secret to my Friends. / Mas vale que ella no revele
mi secreto a mis amigos.

Interrogativa

Had + Sujeto better + verbo + complemento

Had we better wait for the boss? / ¿Será mejor que esperamos al jefe?

WOULD RATHER

Es una expresión verbal que se utiliza para hablar de preferencias en general o

cuando preferimos una opción sobre la otra. Su contracción en forma afirmativa
es (`d rather), la cual es muy común.

Estructura

Afirmativa

Sujeto + would rather + verbo + complemento

I`d rather have meetings in the morning. / Prefiero tener reuniones por las
mañanas.

I would rather sleep now. / Prefiero dormir ahora.

María would rather stay in prison than come home to me. / María preferiría
quedarse en prisión que volver a casa conmigo

We would rather come to school by than walk. / Preferimos llegar a la

escuela antes que caminar.

Negativa

Sujeto + would rather + verbo + complemento

She`d rather not have more Children. / Ella preferiría no tener más hijos.

I would rather not have to talk to them. / Preferiría no tener que hablar con
ellos

She would rather not see me. / Ella preferiría no verme
