¿Qué tipo de referencia es? (1 p).

c- Observe la palabra “however”. ¿Qué función cumple? ¿Qué relación

Future Libraries: Do They Need Managers or Leaders?

“When you’re doing good to others, you’re best

to yourself.” – Benjamin Franklin (1748)

Benjamin Franklin opened the 1st American

subscription library with friends in 1731. It was
called the ‘Library Company of Philadelphia.’

1- Libraries are key components of our society and have been centers of
learning for generations. For this reason, they must survive and thrive.
However, like many other institutions and aspects of society in the
technology and social media era, they are being challenged to adapt to
new norms and generational changes. The question is: Will it take
efficient library management or effective library leadership to meet that
challenge? 

2- As a starting point, it will be useful to define efficient management and

effective leadership. In today’s parlance, ‘management’ is more

about systems and process, while ‘leadership’ is more

about people and progress. In the same vein, ‘efficient’ is more
about cost-savings and fine-tuning, whereas ‘effectiveness’ is more
about innovation and breakthroughs, combined with resource prudence.

3- Furthermore, the conventional management system that we’ve

developed over the past 100 years has generally conformed to the five
steps of: PROJECT the desired numbers, PLAN for those numbers,
ORGANIZE to make those numbers happen, DIRECT everyone to
achieve those numbers, and CONTROL everything to ensure those
numbers are secured. These five steps tend to create our current ‘stop-n-
go’ work situations to retain financial control every step of the way and
spawns a ‘have to’ work situation. It also spurs so many work
environments where they are ‘over-managed and under-led.’

4- With modern societal norms and new emerging workforce generations –

Millennials and Gen-Zers – they find such approaches outdated, stifling
and belittling. Such thinking stems from economic upheavals and their
work experiences over the past ten years. Those feelings have been
egged on by some of the more enlightened academic environments they
have grown up with. These generations grew up in the knowledge age
with tremendous information resources at their fingertips. As a result,
they feel empowered to contribute much more quickly rather than wait for
their turn. They are disenchanted with their conventional management
systems.

5- All these dynamics will place significant demands on libraries and library
staff, where there is increasing pressure to make information available
instantly. Library staff are not only custodians of knowledge and literature
but are also expected to make those resources accessible at the drop of
a hat. Additionally, their teams are increasingly comprised of Millennials,
who expect empowerment and more effective ways to operate other than
command-and-control.

1) A) Mediante la lectura del título, se puede anticipar que el texto

tratará acerca del futuro de las bibliotecas, y si las mismas
requerirán de alguien que las dirija o administre.

B) A partir del paratexto, puedo inferir que estamos frente a un

artículo periodístico o noticia. Esto es debido a que se puede
observar que posee una estructura relacionada a dicho tipo de
textos: título, fecha del artículo, persona que lo escribió, un breve
copete e incluso una imagen.

2) B) La palabra “they”, marcada en el párrafo 1, hace referencia a

las bibliotecas (“libraries”), las cuales fueron mencionadas
anteriormente en el texto. Por lo tanto, se trata de una referencia
endófora anafórica.

C) En el texto, la palabra “however” cumple la función de

conector, estableciendo una relación lógica de
contraste/comparación entre la primera y segunda oración del
párrafo 1.

D) La palabra “furthermore” al inicio del párrafo 3, nos anticipa

que se va a adicionar una nueva idea o planteo que aún no se ha
enunciado en el texto.

3) “The object”: Hace referencia a la caja “box”, mencionada

anteriormente. El objetivo es no repetir la palabra caja. Por lo
tanto, se trata de una referencia endofórica anafórica:
léxica/sustitución/paráfrasis.
“It”: En este caso, también se refiere a la caja; tratándose de una
referencia endofórica anafórica: pronombre.
