In this line, starting from the concept of achieving the revalorization of biomass, there is a high
interest in the use of lignocellulosic material. In general, lignocellulosic biomass is composed of
cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Of these components, the use and exploitation of lignin is a
poorly studied field, although it is considered a great industrial resource. For all these reasons,
the use of lignin as a thickening agent is proposed. The main difficulty is in the selection of the
appropriate process to achieve an efficient interaction with the lubricating oil. Conventional
processes involve a high environmental impact, therefore, a new technique, electrospinning, is
proposed due to its versatility, simplicity and the high characteristics of the final membranes.
Electrospinning is a technique that uses electrostatic forces to develop nano and micro diameter
fibers from polymeric solutions.
So the objective of this work is to observe what role the lignin structures developed by
electrospinning play in the lubrication process.
The process of this research is as follows. First we develop polymeric solutions of lignin with
another polymer, because lignin by itself does not form nanofibers, this solution is used as feed
in the electrospinning process, voltage is applied and the membranes are developed and are
collected in the collector. The membranes are dispersed in castor oil until they are completely
dispersed, thus developing bio-lubricants that will later be characterized both rheologically and
tribologically.
Now I want to show a small video in which you can see how the nanofibers are developed using
the electrospinning technique. We have a syringe connected to a pump to which a feed flow is
applied and a source that applies voltage between an aluminum collector and the needle inducing
the development of nanofibers.)
(Here we show
the relationship of the polymer lignin ratios. As we observe in the previous slide the 30% of
thickener is in a mixed regime, the coefficient grows with the applied force. The higher amount
of lignin is closer to a hydrodynamic regime, this is caused by the presence of particles in the
membranes that remain in the oil matrix separating the contact between the surfaces. It is true
that this will depend on the concentration of the total solution, i.e., working with 15% solutions
favors the appearance of nanofibers without irregularities, helping the thickener-oil interaction
and inducing less friction. The influence of the homogeneity of the membranes can be observed
in the following slide, for 50:50 versus 70:30 solutions at 10% thickener, the constant coefficient
can be observed regardless of the parameters and this occurs due to the presence of fibers in the
membranes. On the other hand, this behavior is also present for another polymer such as PVP. A
slight increase of the friction coefficients with force can be observed for the solutions with less
presence of lignin because the lower presence of lignin improves the development of uniform
membranes.
(Relationship with morphology (diameter): These results
induce to think that the behavior has a direct relationship with the structures of the membranes.
The structure can be quantified by means of the diameter of the fibers obtained and the porosity
of the membranes, obtaining larger diameters with the lower presence of lignin and the higher
total concentration of the solution, and higher porosity with the larger particles appearing in the
nanostructures so when the lignin is more present. The different graphs show a decrease, for each
of the thickener concentrations, in the friction coefficients as the diameter increases, i.e. by
decreasing the lignin: polymer ratio or increasing the concentration of the solution. As for wear,
the diameter does not play a crucial role in the wear properties of bio-lubricants, the importance
falls on the presence or not of particles or beads in the membranes, i.e. on the porosity. It is
possible to observe a slight increase in the coefficients of friction with porosity and higher wear,
caused by the friction of the particles with the contact surface.)
(Finally, we have worked with two polymers, EC and PVP, the
polymeric solutions of PVP show homogeneous and uniform nanostructures, thus presenting
better tribological and wear properties.)
(So, we can conclude the following: The normal force has determined us in which lubrication
regime we are in, for low concentrations of thickener we find the beginning of the hydrodynamic
regime and for high concentrations the beginning of a mixed regime.
Increasing the thickener concentration increases the values of the friction coefficient and results
in more abrasive wear. The microstructure is not easily destroyed within the tribological contact
and does not become more fluid.
The overall concentration of the polymer solution reduces the coefficients of friction
considerably.
All this is directly related to the morphology of the structures obtained. Larger diameters mean
more homogeneous membranes, which results in better interaction between the oil and the
thickener, leading to better lubrication conditions. On the other hand, more particulate structures
have proved to be more abrasive due to the collision of the particles with the tribological contact.
Therefore, we can consider that homogeneous or bead-free nanostructures develop stable
oleogels with remarkable tribological performance.)
